Congaing to Victory

Geno Green took the early lead, pressed by Wild Conga (Congaree). Wild Conga went to the front after a half, and quickly extended his lead despite running on the wrong lead. He finally changed leads late and ended up winning by 5. Weekend Action rallied to take the 2nd spot, while Don'tfightthefed was steady in third.

Seeing the Congar Light

Congar Light (Congaree) was off a bit slow (although not nearly as slowly as Icy Pi, who stumbled badly at the start). Quiet Truckee emerged with the lead after the break, quickly putting daylight between herself and the field. Danger Kitten and With a Fling were the closest pursuers. Congar Light made her move on the turn and soon caught the leading group. Congar Light swept to the lead and kept on going. At the wire, she was 7 in front.

The Col. No Match for Mr. Again

Always in Love took the early advantage, but began to weaken in the stretch. At that point, Mr. Again moved 3-wide to take the lead. He had to fight off a stiff challenge from favorite Invisible Star, but in the end it was 19-1 Mr. Again by better than 2. Col. Wease (Birdstone) didn't show much, saving ground and then swinging wide with little response, finishing 8th (last).

Fleet Streak has a Smart Time

Bye Love and Vickie's Ready battled early, with Maryville not far off. Smarty Time (Smarty Jones) broke well and was sitting about mid-pack. Bye Love and Vickie's Ready began to weaken, and Maryville took control. She was looking like a winner, but Fleet Streak was making her move on the outside. Maryville couldn't hold her off, as Fleet Streak took the win. Smarty Time, who went off as 2nd-choice in the race, finished a decent 5th in her debut.

Cradle of Peace (Peace Rules) rallied from off-the-pace to finish 2nd at 30-1 in the 6 furlong claiming race at Laurel.

Curly Wins

Faithful readers of Maiden Watch may remember Curly, whom we were following last year. I let the Curly watch slide a bit with all the 2-year old (and now 3-year old) action, but I am happy to report that he picked up his 2nd win in his 4-year old debut today at Hawthorne, in a mile and a sixteenth allowance race. He stalked the early pace and the rallied to get his head in front when it mattered.

I named Missunitednations (Peace Rules - Sister Greeley by Mr. Greeley), the Peace Rules' offspring with the most potential, probably cursing her to a racing career of mediocrity. But, she'll get her first opportunity to overcome that pronouncement in the Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct. It will be her first stakes attempt. After breaking her maiden in her 2nd start, at Philadelphia Park on October 11, she ran second in an allowance race at that same track on November 12. In her most recent start, she won an allowance race at Aqueduct on December 12. That race was conducted at the same 1 mile and 70 yards as the Busanda.

Southern Charmer (Dixie Union - Power Play by Fast Play) finished 2nd, behind Missunitednations on December 12 at Aqueduct. Southern Charmer was the even-money favorite in that one. She had made two previous starts, breaking her maiden in her second start at Aqueduct on November 9 in a 6 furlong contest. Finishing 4th in Southern Charmer's maiden win was Miss Dartmouth (Proud Citizen - Smart Erin by Smarten), who returned to win her next race, a mile maiden race at Aqueduct on December 14. She went gate-to-wire in that one.

Fitz Just Right (Seattle Fitz (ARG) - Light Line by Line in the Sand) defeated Missunitednations in the Philadelphia Park allowance race on November 12. Those two dueled before Fitz Just Right pulled away for the win. In her only other start, Fitz Just Right went gate-to-wire in a 6 furlong Maiden race at the Meadowlands.

Don't Forget Gil (Kafwain - Livermore Leslie by Mt. Livermore) took the mile and 70 yards East View Stakes for New York-breds in her most recent start, at Aqueduct on December 7. She broke her maiden in her debut on October 8 at Belmont, and finished 2nd in allowance company on November 13 in her only other start. This will be her first try against open company.

The only other stakes winner in the race is Our Khrysty (Newfoundland - The Hess Express by Lord Carson), who took the Alison Mcclay Overnight Stakes at Penn National in her most recent start on November 14. She also faced stakes company in the Presque Isle Debutante Stakes on September 27, finishing 7th. Before that, she won two straight races, a maiden race at Penn National, and an allowance race at Philadelphia Park. Our Khrysty has never been beyond 6 furlongs.

Chocolate Pop (Cuvee - White Chocolate by With Approval) finished 2nd in the 7 furlong Love Affair Stakes at Aqueduct on November 28, her most recent start. Her maiden win came in her third start, a 7 furlong race at Aqueduct on November 16.

The only other horse with stakes experience is Pumpkin Shell (Lion Heart - Changing Ways by Time for a Change), who ran in the Miss Grillo Stakes on the Belmont turf on October 1 while still a maiden. Her maiden victory came in her 5th and most recent race, a mile and a sixteenth maiden race at Aqueduct on December 4. She has come from off the pace in all of her starts.

Flashing (A. P. Indy - Morning Pride (IRE) by Machiavellian) has run just once, but she won that maiden race on November 30 at Aqueduct. In that 6.5 furlong contest, run on a muddy track, she stalked early before taking control.
