A Warrior's Reward

It was supposed to be the Nicanor show, but Warrior's Reward (Medaglia d'Oro) didn't read the script. Favorite Dubinsky set the early pace, while Warrior's Reward was lingering near the back of the pack. Nicanor began to move on the outside, but soon flattened out. It turned out that Nicanor had an excuse, as he grabbed a quarter out of the gate. Meanwhile, Calvin Borel had Warrior's Reward moving up the rail, as is Calvin's preference. I thought he might get stopped, but as often happens for Calvin, a hole opened up and he went on through. Allrightsreserved moved with him for a time, but Warrior's Reward pulled away. Single Malt, who I thought was the best looker in the post parade, came along late for third. I was impressed with Warrior's Reward's win. The time wasn't great and he didn't win by a huge margin, but to go inside of horses like that shows a lot of professionalism for a first-timer. By the way, Warrior's Reward was the only horse in the field not running on lasix.

Saratoga Sinner Rocks the Holy Bull

Bear's Rocket set the early pace pursed by Saratoga Sinner. Those two stayed that way for much of the race, until Saratoga Sinner finally got his head in front. Both West Side Bernie and Beethoven seemed to be compromised a bit by their outside posts, finishing 3rd and 4th. Rockland (Smarty Jones) broke ok and was in a good spot, but didn't seem to have any punch, finishing 8th. Favorite Danger to Society didn't have much impact either.

Captain Rio Overhauls Tapis Magique

This was an eventful race. Polished stumbled at the start, losing rider Julien Leparoux. Then, Presto Change O clipped heels, losing his rider Javier Castellano. Actually, Presto Change O was trouble from the beginning. Check out his line, "ducked in sharply at the start, rushed into contention, came out and knocked Just a Coincidence into Jacoby's Run, then clipped heels". Sounds like someone needs some schooling. Clear from all the bumping was Captain Rio, who took the lead from his outside post. He was pursued by Mighty Score and Galligan Road. He left those two to battle for place, and took the win for himself. Tapis Magique (Speightstown) didn't have much impact, running 7th most of the way round, but he did move into 6th at the wire.

An Eternity Echoes Over the Duke

Storm'n Warrior set the early pace. Dukes Alley (Speightstown) was up close early, but then dropped back a bit. Once he settled he began moving forward again. Favorite Echo in Beauty was moving too. They were together for awhile, but Echo in Eternity spurted away from Dukes Alley for the win. Still, a promising first turf start for Dukes Alley.

Other Results for January 31

Turfway was canceled on January 31, as the ice and the snow and the melting played havoc with the track, so that meant that Verdant (filly; Pleasantly Perfect - Rift Valley by Gulch) and Oriental Sunshine (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Kristi's Sunshine by Miswaki) will wait for another day.

Jeramino (colt; Congaree - Jera by Jeblar) was in a good position from the beginning, stalking leader Street Car. He made his bid in the stretch, and took control. I was yelling "Jeranimo," as he scored at 12-1 in his Maiden Special Weight at Santa Anita.

River Treck (gelding; Congaree - Gem Treck by Java Gold) added another win on the day for Congaree, in his Maiden Special Weight at Delta Downs. Going off as the favorite, he dueled early, and then pulled away to a 2 length victory.

Signet Ring (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Runaway Royalty by Runaway Groom) was never really involved in his Maiden Claiming contest at Fair Grounds, finishing 9th of 10.

Anaan (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Parisian Deputy by French Deputy) was off slowly in his Maiden Special Weight race at Oaklawn. He started making up ground in the homestretch, going 6-wide. But, he bumped with Bimini Twist and ran evenly after that, finishing 7th.
