A Heroic Victory

3-5 favorite Heroism (Speightstown) was off slowly, but was rushed up into the lead from his rail spot. He was soon two in front of the field. He cruised through the first five furlongs, but got a bit of a challenge from Cascade Cruiser in the stretch. A couple of taps of the whip kept that one safely at bay.

Proudly Irish Cons Campbell

Proudly Irish sped right to the lead and set soft fractions while building up a sizable lead. Con Lover (Congaree) made a dent in the margin in the stretch, but had to settle for second. Perfectly Campbell (Pleasantly Perfect) didn't seem to start running until after Proudly Irish had crossed the finish line. She made up a lot of ground, but could get no closer than 5th. Hopefully, she'll see 2 turns next time out.

Broad Stone Can't Catch Crowned Royal

Nun Like Me was gunned to the early lead from his outside post, but he was pursued by several including Wild Type, Dirt Farmer, and Crowned Royal. Broad Stone (Birdstone) was reserved off the pace, but after a half began picking off horses on the inside. Crowned Royal hit the front, as Broad Stone was swung out for the stretch run. Broad Stone was getting to Crowned Royal, but was hampered by bearing in towards the rail. I'm not sure Broad Stone would have caught Crowned Royal if he would have kept a straighter path, but the margin would have been reduced.

There was no Equibase Chart available for this race when I wrote this. If it shows up later, I'll add a link to it.

Gatorette Snaps a Smart Artisan Victory

Out Post and Durlores dueled early, but they were soon overtaken by Gatorette. Out Post kept it close for awhile, but in the stretch Gatorette drew off, to win by more than 7. Smart 'n Snazzy (Smarty Jones) was near the back early, made a bit of a move, had to steady in the turn to avoid Reggae Rose and didn't run much after that finishing 6th. Artisan (Smarty Jones) didn't break well and was always near the back.

Other Results for February 1

Valid Rule (gelding; Peace Rules - Valid Bonnet by Valid Appeal) finished third in the Allowance/Optional Claiming race at Oaklawn, as he stalked the early pace. This was a step up in class for Valid Rule, and although he didn't win, he did run well, which bodes well for his future.

Run Smart One (colt; Smarty Jones - Literary Light by Ide) finished 6th at Turfway Park.

Although not a Maiden Watch horse, it was nice to see Mr. Hot Stuff, the full-brother to Colonel John, get his maiden victory today. He made a good impression, closing from well of the pace. It was even nicer that he went off at 9-1, thanks to the presence of heavy favorite Turk.

Entries for February 2

There are no Maiden entries for February 2, but a couple of Maiden Watch horses are entered against winners.

Greer Lynn (filly; Speightstown - Roll Over Baby by Rollin Over) in a Main Track only entrant in an allowance race at Fair Grounds scheduled for about 5.5 furlongs on the turf. Post time is 3:25, and she's in post 7. Interestingly, Heart Ashley, who was scratched from the Forward Gal (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park on January 30, is also an MTO entrant for this allowance race. Greer Lynn broke her maiden last time out, on December 18 at Fair Grounds.

Me You and Her (filly; Smarty Jones - Toi Et Moi by Deputy Minister) runs in a Starter Allowance race at Philadelphia Park (race 7). She'll face 9 in this 6.5 furlong race. Me You and Her broke her maiden in her last start, at 5.5 furlongs at Philadelphia Park on January 5.

I was out at GGF yesterday and got photographs of the Heroism win... see photos 7-10 in the following gallery: www.facebook.com/album.php

He was the epitome of class from the paddock to the walk back to the barn after the race. Looks like he'll stretch out quite nicely.

Kevin - Thanks for the link. Great pictures. Heroism is a nice looking animal. It was also nice to see photos of Alashir's Storm, as he's on my personal watch list.

What lovely photos and Heroism is indeed a gorgeous looking individual, full of class!!   All the horses looked wonderful!

I enjoy Maidenwatch and reading about the horses runnig in and/or breaking their maidens.  Am excited about Colonel John's brother Mr Hot Stuff too! And am also glad Colonel John and Mambo in Seattle remain in training!  Looking forward to more spine tingling races between them!

God Bless

Best Wishes

Speightstown had a winner in japan today.  Griffin Gate won in her second start today.

I'm glad you mentioned Mr. Hot Stuff on Sunday. He hadn't shown much before that race, but on the gallop out it looked like he was ready to go around again.

It might be too late to think Derby, but I could see him winning the Travers.
