Haynesfield Rolls; French and Esperanza Impress

  • Comments

I'm a little under the weather today, so no previews for February 8. However, I will list the entries after the February 7 results.

Haynesfield Rolls On

People may say that he has distance limitations or that he's beating inferior horses in New York, but all Haynesfield (Speightstown) does is keep on winning. This time, there was no messing around. He went right to the lead, pressed first by Mike From Queens, and Peace Town (Peace Rules). After 6 furlongs, he opened up and won by more than 6. Peace Town tired to 5th.

Esperanza d'Oro Flies Home

This was one of those wow performances that you wait all week to see. Yes, Esperanza d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) was the favorite, so expected to win (she was bet down considerably from the morning line, so apparently was the buzz horse around the track), and the winning margin was just a couple lengths. But, what happened between the start and the finish made this one special. Big Shot Baby broke on top and took control early. Esperanza d'Oro broke slowly and was steadied and was left near the back of the pack. She seemed hopelessly out of it, but suddenly began rolling on the outside. My Natalie made a nice move up front and took the lead, but she was no match for a determined Esperanza d'Oro, who went by the leaders like they were standing still. As Track Announcer Richard Grunder said, she won like a filly with a future.

Result: February 7, 2009
Tampa Bay Race 7

Esperanza d'Oro $5.40

Summit is Supreme Over Clyde

Crack Thepat, and Vanquest dueled early, with Supreme Summit not far back. Crack Thepat tired in the stretch, but Vanquest and Supreme Summit went on with it. In the end, Supreme Summit shook free. Cantankerous Clyde (Peace Rules) was near the pace early, but weakened to finish 7th.

Result: February 7, 2009
Santa Anita Race 4
Maiden Special Weight

Supreme Summit $9.00

Hull is Outta Speight

Hull went right to the lead. He was pursued by Rondevous, but shook free from that one, drawing off to a 4 length victory. Outta Speight (Speightstown) finished 5th, but it was a better performance than that finish position would suggest. He was off slow and ran early like he was trying to figure out what he was supposed to do. He figured it out late, and picked up several positions. Next time, he should be much improved.

Fair Grounds Race 11

Hull $7.80

Other Results for February 7

Conga Queen (filly; Congaree - Special Test by Special Test) went right to the lead and didn't look back at Oaklawn, speeding away to win by better than 10. I think her connections are probably breathing a sigh of relief that she wasn't claimed out of this one.

Rule of Motion (colt; Peace Rules - Poetic Motion by Green Dancer) also went to the front at the start, but was closely pursued by favorite Shipwreckstreasure. Rule of Motion fought all the way to the wire, but had to settle for 2nd in this allowance race at Philadelphia Park. This race boosted his total earnings to $51,690.

Congo Kaye (filly; Congaree - Palau by Kingmambo) trailed the field early, but finished full of run. However, she only managed to pass one and finished 7th. Six furlongs may be too short for her.

Entries for February 8

Hold Me Touch Me (filly; Saarland - Falling in Love (IRE) by Sadler's Wells) faces 7 in a mile race at Turfway Park, race 3. This one is for 3-year old and up fillies and mares and has a post of 2:04 PM ET. Last time out, Hold Me Touch Me finished 8th at Turfway on January 25, while running a mile.

At 5:45, Higher Peace (colt; Peace Rules - Red Hot Chiquita by Mr. Expo) goes 6 furlongs at Gulfstream Park. For $50,000, you can claim him for your own. This will be Higher Peace's 2nd start, after finishing 7th in his debut on January 14 at Gulfstream.
