Chef Cooks Them

Chef (Smarty Jones) went right to the lead. He was pursued for a time by Stardust Ziggy and Peacefields, but soon left them behind. He did drift out a bit, allowing favorite Convocation to make up some ground. But, Chef straightened up again and finished strong. The final margin was more than 4. The fractions and the final time were pretty decent as well (22.44, 45.50, 1:10.63, 1:23.74). Breaking your maiden first time out going 7 furlongs is not the easiest proposition, but it was a piece of cake for Chef.

Fierce Thunders By a Midnight Break

This one was taken off the turf and run on a sloppy main track. Just Right (Pleasantly Perfect) was scratched, and Midnight Break (Congaree) didn't seem to handle the track, finishing 6th. Instead, the race belonged to the Main Track Only entrants, Fierce Thunder and Charlie Trumper. Charlie Trumper made a race of it for awhile, but favorite Fierce Thunder was too much, winning by better than 5. Masked Man did make a good late run to almost catch Charlie Trumper for the 2nd spot.

A Heavenly Union

This one also came off the turf, which did allow AE horse Atalanta Velox (Medaglia d'Oro) to run. Black Magic Mama and Dextera dueled early, with Rare Sparkle also in the mix. G's Heavenly Union and On Approval both swung into action late, G's Heavenly Union on the rail and On Approval outside. At the end, they were separated by just a neck, as G's Heavenly Union took the win. Wiggle and a Wink (Congaree) never seemed to settle in this one. She was pulling early and got herself in a tight spot. But, she finished well, placing 5th (but just a nose and bit out of third). Atalanta Velox was near the back early, came 6-wide, but didn't make much headway, finishing 8th.

Stakes Results for February 14

No stakes wins on the day, but some good performances.

In the Suncoast at Tampa Bay, Ameribelle (Medaglia d'Oro) hit the lead in the stretch, but was outfinished by Rock Candy. The winning margin was a neck. It was another neck back to favorite Don't Forget Gil.

Chattertown (Speightstown) made a race of the Dearly Precious at Aqueduct for awhile, chasing Dream Play. But that filly pulled away in the stretch winning by better than 8. Still, it was good to see that Chattertown was able to hold off favorite Liza Too for the place spot. Liza Too, who broke awkwardly, came up a nose short to a game Chattertown.

Into My Soul (Pleasantly Perfect) ran evenly in third in the Hallandale Beach at Gulfstream. He didn't have the closing kick to match winner Duke of Homberg or 2nd place finisher Lime Rickey.

Medaglia d'Onore (Medaglia d'Oro) was never much involved in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay, finishing 9th.

Other Results for February 14

Conchacer (colt; Congaree - Eliot Chacer by Clever Trick) was up close early, put in a long drive, and prevailed to pick up his maiden win at Tampa Bay.

Becky's Express (colt; Congaree - Becky Virtue by Strodes Creek) stalked the early pacesetter, but weakened late to finish 6th in the 8th at Fair Grounds, a mile and a sixteenth allowance race.

Neither Dueling Alex (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Rosie Dooley by Trempolino) nor Lookin Left (colt; Congaree - Santa Fe Strip by Phone Trick) showed much in the 8th at Gulfstream, a 6.5 furlong allowance race. Dueling Alex was 6th, and Lookin Left was 9th. The winner in that one was favorite Imperial Council, who has been mentioned on some Derby lists and who will probably be mentioned on more now.

Maraschino Red (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Irish Cherry by Irish Open) was near the back early in her maiden special weight turf race at Gulfstream and didn't have any punch in the stretch, finishing 9th.

Verdant (filly; Pleasantly Perfect - Rift Valley by Gulch) made a middle move in her maiden special weight race at Turfway, getting up to 2nd. But, she weakened and ended up 4th (just missed third).

Bugle Ann (filly; Birdstone - Lady Taurus by Holy Bull) finished 7th at Oaklawn in maiden claiming company.
