A Tasty Temptation to be Outta Speight

Suz Slew Nobly Rules Miracle Baby

Waccamaw, half of the favored Darley entry, went to the lead and set most of the fractions. Most of the fractions, except the one that really counted, the final one. Suz Slew, who had been chasing throughout, grabbed the lead late to get the victory. Rallying nicely into 2nd was Now and Forever. Noble Rule (Peace Rules) saved ground, but couldn't make up much, finishing 6th. Miracle Baby (Smarty Jones) steadied going into the first turn and was never involved, finishing 9th (last). A rather pedestrian final time for this one, 1:53.22 for the mile and an eighth.

Also returning from Tasty Temptation's January 23 race are Saint Cindy (Devil His Due - Trendy Cindy by Cozzene) and Third Dawn (Sky Mesa - Chalmette by Quiet American) who were 2nd and 3rd. Saint Cindy made 6 previous starts as a 2-year old. Her best finish was 3rd on December 19 at Hollywood Park. Trendy Cindy, dam of Saint Cindy, was stakes-placed and earned $172,323. As a broodmare, she has produced 2 winners. Third Dawn also finished 2nd, in front of Tasty Temptation, on December 27 on the Santa Anita turf, and 3rd at Hollywood on December 7. Outta Speight (Speightstown - Winter Garden by Roy) makes his 2nd start, after finishing 5th in his debut at Fair Grounds on February 7. In that one, he started slow and didn't seem to figure out what to do until late in the race, so there is much hope for improvement this time around. Outta Speight sold for $350,000 as a yearling, and is the first foal out of grade III winner Winter Garden. Winter Garden won or placed in 11 stakes and earned $902,788.

Wine Classic (During - Surprisingly by Bertrando), Flavor (Elusive Quality - Right Spice by Salt Lake), and Spunk (Malibu Moon - Stormin Cat by Storm Cat) met in a 6 furlong race at Fair Grounds on January 29. Wine Classic was 2nd, Flavor wsa 3rd, and Spunk finished 6th. Wine Classic and Flavor also met on January 1 at Fair Grounds, finishing 7th and 5th. Wine Classic has made one other start, finishing 7th on November 30 at Fair Grounds. He sold for $85,000 as a yearling, and is the first foal out of stakes-placed Surprisingly, who earned $136,138. Flavor is the 2nd foal out of the winning mare Right Spice. Right Spice is a half-sister to stakes winners Words of War and Word o' Ransom, and grade III winner Ascuteney. Spunk is out of the winning mare Stormin Cat, who has produced 3 winners from 4 to run. Spunk is also a great name, but that's just my opinion and says nothing about his running ability.

The only other entrant with experience is Mag Shot (Came Home - Tia Gigi by Assert (IRE)), who finished 7th on November 29 at Churchill Downs, and 2nd at Fair Grounds on January 15. Mag Shot brought $58,000 at 2, and is out of Tia Gigi, a group I winner in Peru. Tia Gigi has produced 4 winners.

Smiley Pete (Distorted Humor - Irish Lover (BRZ) by Spend a Buck) sold for $295,000 as a yearling, and is the 2nd foal out of Irish Lover, a group I winner in Brazil.

My Rocket Man (Newfoundland - Marvel by Williamstown) is the first foal out of the winning mare Marvel. Marvel is a half-sister to 6 winners, including grade II stakes-placed Smokeyjonessutton.

Grade III winner Swept Away, dam of Cash Refund (Petionville - Swept Away by Mystery Storm), won or placed in 12 stakes and earned $550,500. She was also a debut winner. Swept Away has produced Swept Gold, who was a debut winner, and finished third in the Debutante (gr. III).
