Cater Catches Bird at the Border

Hoya and Tiz Believing held the early pace, with Mine That Bird (Birdstone) watching in third. Mine That Bird made an early move to join and then pass the leaders. Hornung (Speightstown) also came running and for a moment, it looked like a Maiden Watch exacta. But, favorite Scorewithcater made his move wide and seemed poised to go on by. However, Mine That Bird did not wither, sticking with Scorewithcater. Scorewithcater finally prevailed by a short neck. Hornung tired to 6th. Mine That Bird may have moved a bit early in this one, but it was a good 3-year old debut. It was nice to see him fight back after he was headed. Hornung didn't do so badly in his stakes debut either.

Smarty Bulls Her Way to a Win

Smarty Bull (Smarty Jones) chased the early pace set by Off She Goes and Cassie's Boot. At the top of the stretch, Smarty Bull made her move and pulled away, winning by 7. Mary's Song closed well to pick up 2nd. Yes, this was a Maiden Claiming race, but the Claiming tag was $80,000. I don't think this one will see the claiming ranks again, at least for awhile.

Mein Fraulein in Command

Mein Fraulein (Saarland) went off at even-money and ran to her odds. She was bumped hard at the start (by our other runner Diva d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro), who didn't recover, finishing last), but that didn't stop her. She was never far off the pace set by Ten Lil Indians and Retro, made her move in the stretch and coasted to a 4 length lead. I've always thought that Mein Fraulein had some talent, but this switch to the dirt (from the Polytrack) seems to have woken her up (or maybe it was the change of connections and/or venue).

A Snaphot Over Just Ben and Original Ink

Snapshot leapt out of the gate and was soon clear of the field. No one seriously threatened him, as he cruised to the win. 64-1 Juliano was best of the rest. Just Ben (Speightstown) was off slowly, but did have some late gain to finish 4th. Original Ink (Speightstown) also started slowly, and then was pulled up after jumping to avoid the fallen Valid Name, who broke down.

Woodacre gets Plosh

Nine Millimeter set the early pace, attended by Mountain Climber and Channingstown (Speightstown). Those last two weakened to finish 8th and 9th respectfully. Nine Millimeter hung on until late, but was overtaken by favorite Woodacre, who sprinted clear. Nine Millimeter faded after being passed. Plosh (Peace Rules) was off slow, rallied between horses, and just got up for 2nd. Smarty's Gold (Smarty Jones) ran mid-pack throughout, finishing 7th.

No Questions for Pax and Driven by Saarland

A nice win by 4-year old No Questions in this one. He lingered near the back, as Sal Paradise and Brook Dance set the early pace. Brook Dance took the lead, as the others weakened. But, No Questions came rolling on the outside to sweep by everyone, winning by 6. Pax (Smarty Jones) broke in the air and then stumbled. Once he got in gear, he ran into traffic. So, his fourth-place finish was not too bad. In 5th was Driven by Saarland (Saarland), who was stuck on the rail for much of the race and didn't show much once clear.

Renda (Medaglia d'Oro - Ten Carats by Capote) and C. S. Silk (Medaglia d'Oro - Remember the Day by Settlement Day) meet again, after finishing 2nd and 4th in the 7 furlong Forward Gal (gr. II) on January 30 at Gulfstream Park. This time, they are joined by undefeated Shared Account (Pleasantly Perfect - Silk N' Sapphire by Smart Strike), who broke her maiden on October 31, and then won an allowance/optional claiming race on January 17. Both of those races were at Laurel. Renda is a multiple stakes winner, having won the Junior Champion Stakes at Monmouth and the Brave Raj Stakes at Calder. C. S. Silk is a grade III winner, having won the Arlington-Washington Lassie.

Also returning from the Forward Gal are Frolic's Dream (Smoke Glacken - Flashy Frolic by Premiership), who won the race, and Hopeful Image (Gulch - Marquet Rent by Marquetry), who was 6th. Frolic's Dream has won 4 out of 5 starts, including the Cassidy and Joe O'Farrell Juvenile Fillies Stakes. Her only blemish was a 3rd place finish in the Old Hat (gr. III). Hopeful Image was third in Renda's Brave Raj. Overall, she has made 9 starts, recording 2 wins, 1 second, and 1 third.

Justwhistledixie (Dixie Union - General Jeanne by Honour and Glory) finished 3rd in her first two starts, and then won 3 in a row, including the Love Affair and Ruthless Stakes. Justwhistledixie, who has never been beyond 7 furlongs, has been a pace factor in all of her races.

Finishing 3rd, behind Justwhistledixie, in the Love Affair was Casanova Move (Langfuhr - Casanova Junction by Pleasant Colony). She was also 4th behind Frolic's Dream in the Old Hat. Most recently, she finished 3rd in a 6.5 furlong allowance race at Gulfstream behind Cassidys Pride and Light Green.

Step Out Smartly (Came Home - Fashion Planner by Capote) is also a stakes winner, having won the Gowell at Turfway Park on December 20 in her most recent start. Her longest race thus far was 6.5 furlongs.

Stage Trick (Distorted Humor - Engaging by Private Account) is making her stakes debut. She broke her maiden in her third and most recent start, going a mile at Gulfstream on February 1.

Dream Now (Medaglia d'Oro - Striking Distance by Blushing John), who finished 7th last time out on January 23 on the Santa Anita Pro-Ride (in a race originally scheduled for the turf), returns to the turf in a big way in the grade III Baldwin. Dream Now is the only entrant who has a victory over the Santa Anita downhill course, having broken his maiden there on January 1.

Flashmans Papers (Exceed And Excel (AUS) - Franglais (GER) by Lion Cavern), who started his career in England, won the Eddie Logan at a mile on the turf at Santa Anita on December 27. This year, he tried the San Pedro Stakes on the Pro-Ride, finishing 6th. He should relish the return to the turf. Overall, Flashmans Papers has run 12 times, recording 3 wins and 2 thirds. All of his wins were on the turf.

Battle of Hastings (Royal Applause (GB) - Subya (GB) by Night Shift) also began his career in England, winning 2 out of 5 turf starts. He has made one start in this country, finishing 7th in the Generous Stakes (gr. III) at a mile on the Hollywood turf on November 29.

Brother Keith (Johar - Hawa Mahal by Hennessy) was on the Derby trail, but after finishing 4th in the San Rafael (gr. III) and 7th (after setting the pace) in the Robert Lewis, he is being tried on the turf. Sire Johar would seem to be a plus on the turf, if he's good enough.

Preemo (Vindication - Solar Fire by Stravinsky) broke his maiden in his most recent start, going 6 furlongs on the Hollywood turf on December 13. He led practically the entire race in that one.

Dream of Kaylee (Cactus Ridge - Witchkin by Salem) made his debut in the Kentucky Stakes (gr. III), finishing 3rd. He then broke his maiden in his next start, going 6 furlongs at Santa Anita. His most recent effort was on December 28, where he was third in an allowance race at Santa Anita. All of his races were on the dirt or Pro-Ride.

Beauteous Maximus (Western Fame - Love Storm by Illinois Storm) broke his maiden in his 5th start, and then finished 5th in the California Breeders' Champion Stakes. This will be his first race not restricted to California-breds, and his first time on the grass.

Luckiest Man (Grand Slam - Performing Arts (IRE) by The Minstrel) also has no turf experience. He broke his maiden in his 2nd start, on January 23 at Santa Anita. He then finished 4th in a 6 furlong allowance race at that track, on February 16.

I hope a Birdstone makes it to the Derby. Would be cool if one did and beat all the Unbridled Song horses. They get so much press. It would be like when US was getting all the publicity and Grindstone did him up as the other son of Unbridled. The one that got no attention. Love it!

im keeping an eye on Summer Bird.  He should have won the race but he broke last and was 6 wide. He definately looked like the best horse of the race

Alisha - I thought Summer Bird ran an excellent race. I'm pretty familiar with his female family and they usually take awhile to figure things out. He seems to be ahead of the curve.

I just put Summer Bird in my Equibase virtual stable - He does look like one to watch. Also his broodmare sire is the wonderful

Summer Squall - A very underated race horse and sire....

SmartyBull ran an awesome race. She blew away the field at 7 lengths.

Her racing, gait, and appearance were like watching Smarty Jones race once again.

What a terrific filly.

I was scared Smartybull was going to take a bad step after the race. I was watching her closely and she didnt look very nice galloping out. I was almost scared she was going to do a Go Smarty Go.
