Our first chance to see some of the offspring of our First-crop sires in action came at the Fasig-Tipton Calder Selected Two-Year Olds in Training Sale. This was not the first 2-year old sale of the year, but the first to feature offspring by our sires. Ghostzapper led the way, with hip #174, a filly out of the Meadowlake mare, Holiday Runner, selling for $400,000. She breezed an eighth of a mile in :10.2.
Afleet Alex also had a filly go in :10.2, Hip #225, who sold for $220,000. She is called Inside Scoop and her dam is Mindset, by Coronado's Quest. Two other Afleet Alex offspring, a colt and a filly, did not meet their reserve prices.
Not to be outdone, Kitten's Joy also had an offspring work in :10.2, Hip #26, a colt out of the Salt Lake mare, Steaming Home, whose name I have recorded as Do What U Dare. He sold for $125,000.
Rock Hard Ten had two colts sell (as well as a filly who failed to meet her reserve), Hip #80, Doubledareu, out of the Diesis mare, Arjunand, worked in :10.4 and sold for $130,000. Hip #116 out of Clever Monique, by Clever Trick, sold for $125,000, after working in :11.0.
Saint Liam had two offspring entered, but they were both withdrawn.
The sale-topper was Hip #94, Cup o' Joe, a Medaglia d'Oro colt who worked in :10.3. He brought $1.6 million.
Peace Town Takes Honors in Maryland
Peace Town (colt; Peace Rules - Darnestown by Williamstown) was named 2008 Champion 2-year old male in Maryland. Peace Town won 3 out of 5 2008 races, including the Maryland Juvenile Championship Stakes. He was also 2nd in the Trapp Mountain Stakes. This year, Peace Town has had one race, finishing 5th in the Whirlaway.

Despite the Odds (Speightstown - Lady Aloma by Cozzene), who sold for $300,000 as a 2-year old, debuts at 6 furlongs at Laurel. Despite the Odds began working at Fair Hill in mid-December, and also has had one work at Laurel, on February 24. He is out of stakes winner Lady Aloma, who earned $110,359. Lady Aloma has produced 3 winners, including stakes winner Karra Kul, and Chopinina, a grade III winner in Canada. Chopinina was also a debut winner.
The only entrant with experience is Daring Notion (Great Notion - Lady Adare by Dare and Go), who was 8th in his first and only start, a 6 furlong Maiden Special Weight race at Laurel on January 2. Daring Notion sold for $30,000 as a 2-year old, and is the first foal out of the winning mare Lady Adare. Lady Adare earned $138,360 and is a half-sister to 9 winners, including Capitan Coraje, a group II winner in Peru, and Captain Garfio, a group I winner in Peru.
Triple Honor (Double Honor - Cool Grades by Honor Grades) sold for $17,000 as a yearling, and $80,000 as a 2-year old. He is out of the winning mare Cool Grades, who has produced 3 winners from 4 to run.
Grinding Speed (Grindstone - Cozelia by Cozzene), who sold for $11,000 as a 2-year old, is out of the winning mare Cozelia. Cozelia has produced 3 winners from 4 to run.
Outmaneuver (Outflanker - Code Woo by Lost Code) is out of the winning mare Code Woo. Code Woo has produced one winner from one to race, and that winner, Jazz Ensemble, won her debut.
D'Youville Nurse, dam of Dr Redwood (Forestry - D'Youville Nurse by Dr. Blum), was a stakes winner who earned $145,348. She has produced 8 winners, including stakes winner Forestier and grade III winner Unbridled Hope. Two of Dr Redwood's siblings won their debuts.
Bowie Mill (Broken Vow - Danyross (IRE) by Danehill) is out of group III stakes-placed Danyross. Danyross has produced 5 winners from 6 to run, including stakes-placed Mighty Vow. Mighty Vow is a full-brother to Bowie Mill. Two of Bowie Mill's siblings won their debuts, including Mighty Vow.
Veteran Georgie (No Armistice - Steal the Bases by Future Storm) is the 2nd foal out of the debut winning mare Steal the Bases. Steal the Bases is a half-sister to 3 winners, including stakes winner Round Robin.
Carol's Hero (Partner's Hero - Carol's Halo by Jolie's Halo) is the 2nd foal out of the winning mare Carol's Halo. Carol's Halo's first foal, Rao's Heart, is a winner. Carol's Halo is also a half-sister to 11 winners.
Little James (Kokand - Sheeza Looker by Becker) is out the winning mare Sheeza Looker. Sheeza Looker is a half- or full-sister to 4 winners.

Stones Throw (colt; Birdstone - Twinkler by Benny the Dip) faces 9 in Race 3 at Gulfstream, a one mile Maiden Claiming race for three-year olds and up. Post time is 2:12 PM ET. There is only one other 3-year old in the field, Solidify, the rest are 4-year olds. Stones Throw's only race came on November 29 at Aqueduct, where he finished 10th going 6 furlongs. He has been working at Palm Meadows since late December, including four works in February.
Also at Gulfstream, Schrader Rules (filly; Peace Rules - She Did It Her Way by Private Terms) goes 6.5 furlongs at 4:12 PM ET. She'll break from post 6 in this full field. Schrader Rules has run 4 times, including 2 4-place finishes in 2008. Her most recent race was on January 25 at Gulfstream Park, where she finished 9th while running 5.5 furlongs.
Dial Four Peace (gelding; Peace Rules - Four O One Katie by Marquetry) makes his 7th start, and his 3rd of 2009, in a 6 furlong Maiden Claiming race at Golden Gate. He'll face 6 in this race scheduled for 5:20 PM ET. Dial Four Peace last ran on February 19 at Santa Anita in a 6.5 furlong Maiden Claiming race, finishing 4th. The trip up north may be enough to get him in the winner's circle.
