First worker for Afleet Alex, as Recession Proof (filly; Afleet Alex - Pert Lady by Cox's Ridge) went 3 furlongs in :37.20 at Laurel Park. Recession Proof sold for $40,000 at the Keeneland January 2009 Sale for Horses of all Ages. She is out of the winning mare Pert Lady. Pert Lady is the dam of grade II winner Zavata. Zavata won three races at 2, including the Saratoga Special (gr. II) and the Tremont (gr. III). Overall, he earned $346,533.

Saarlight Shines Bright

Fondant took the early lead, but Saarlight (Saarland) wasn't far off. After a quarter, she surged to the lead. Strut the Canary took a run at Saarlight, but the latter filly had enough to get the win. Saarlight scored by a length to break her maiden in style.

Heir to the Stone (Birdstone) went right to the lead. He had company throughout, first from Sweet Groom, and then from Legal Consent. However, Heir to the Stone remained on top. He did not increase his lead tremendously, but neither did the competition gain, as Heir to the Stone made his 3-year old debut a winning one.

Mundo En Fuego is Kept in Mind

Pettarano set the early pace, pursued by Count the Gold and Bull Toccet. Keep Me in Mind (Smarty Jones) was in a good position early, but he began to retreat through the field, finishing 10th. Up front, Bull Toccet charged to the lead, but he could not hold off the closing kick of favorite Mundo En Fuego, who spurted free to win by better than 3.

Platinum Deal Wins Smartly

Smart Attire (Smarty Jones) took most of the money in this one, going off as the favorite. He showed a little speed early, but soon retreated, finishing 10th. Up front, Platinum Devil and Annie C's Lil Tee dueled for the lead. Annie C's Lil Tee was through after a half, but Platinum Devil continued up front. Campfire Coffee and Spin Doctor both closed well for the minor awards, but they couldn't catch Platinum Devil.
