Smiley Pete has all the Dough

Smiley Pete went to the lead, but Ethics Reform was sticking close, and Be Me wasn't too far off. Smiley Pete shook free of his pursuers in the stretch. Burt's a Stitch came on for second. Neither Brazilionaire (Congaree) nor Goldfinder (Speightstown) had much say in this one, finishing 8th and 10th.

Who was that Masked Man?

Golgatha and Baylor Dude dueled early, with Golgatha giving up first. Favorite Masked Man wasn't far back, made his move 4-wide, and opened up on the field. Sabago made a bid 5-wide, but couldn't threaten the winner. He weakened late and just held off Aye Aye Skippy. Masked Man is a half-brother to Storm Catch, who runs in the 11th race at Gulfstream on March 14. Monsieur Robert (Medaglia d'Oro - Golden Lake by Salt Lake) trailed the field throughout in 8th.

Other Results for March 13

Fufty Too (colt; Speightstown - Cape North by Capote) set the pace in his Allowance race at Oaklawn, but was gradually worn down by Everyday Hereos. Fufty Too was well clear of the rest of the field.

Saardona (filly; Saarland - Golden Penny by Touch Gold) pressed pacesetter Ultimate Bliss throughout her Maiden Claiming race. She couldn't catch that one, but held a 6 length advantage on the rest of them.

Gold d'Oro (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Gold Canyon by Mr. Prospector) did not draw in off the AE list for her Maiden Special Weight at Gulfstream.

First Magnitude (colt; Saarland - Fapindy by A. P. Indy) was scratched from his Maiden Claiming race at Oaklawn Park.

March 14 Stakes Entries

A number of stakes entries this Saturday featuring Maiden Watch graduates. I won't go into depth on the fields, instead I'll focus on the Maiden Watch horses (by the way, in case anyone is wondering, these races are in post time order).

Ameribelle (Medaglia d'Oro - Miz United States by Valid Appeal), who finished 2nd in the Suncoast Stakes in her last start on February 14 at Tampa Bay, finds many familiar faces in the Florida Oaks (gr. III), post time 4:17 PM ET. Rock Candy (Mineshaft - Party Chatter by Pleasant Colony) won the Suncoast by a neck, and Don't Forget Gil (Kafwain - Livermore Leslie by Mt. Livermore), who was the favorite in the Suncoast, was just behind the top 2. Also returning from the Suncoast are Dzibanche (Roar of the Tiger - North to South by Northern Flagship), who was 4th, and Brinca (Macho Uno - Bailarina by Lord Avie), who was 5th. New shooters are Miss Ocean City (Mineshaft - Madam Lagonza by Kingmambo) and Royal Ballade (Elusive Quality - Musical Chimes by In Excess (IRE)), who are making their 3-year old debuts, after finishing 9th and 10th in the Frizette Stakes (gr. I) at 2. Read more about the Florida Oaks here.

Maiden Lucy to the Max (Birdstone - I Dream by Wajima) is entered in the Scottsdale at a mile on the Turf Paradise turf (Post time 4:30 PM ET), but she is also entered in a Maiden race on the turf on Monday, March 16. So, we'll see which one she goes in. Lucy to the Max has run 3 times, all at Turf Paradise. In 2009, she has finished 4th on January 25 and 2nd on February 15. Both races were at a mile on the turf. Favored in the Scottsdale is Dot Dash Dot (Put It Back - Shingalana by Jolie's Halo) who won 2 stakes in 2008. This will be her 2009 debut. She has no starts on the turf. Also worthy of note is Summers Peace (Orientate - Interval by Forty Niner), who is 2 for 2 in 2009, but also has no turf experience.

Jeranimo (Congaree - Jera by Jeblar) takes on heavy favorite Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker - Star of Goshen by Lord At War (ARG)) and 5 others in the San Felipe (gr. II). Post time 5:03 PM ET. Jeranimo last ran on February 26 at Santa Anita, in a mile and a sixteenth Allowance race, finishing 2nd. He broke his maiden in his 2nd start, on January 31 at Santa Anita, while running 6.5 furlongs. Read more about the San Felipe here.

Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro - Lotta Kim by Roar), who impressed everyone with her 8 length victory in the Martha Washington at Oaklawn on February 15, takes on 5 in the Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II). Post time 5:07 PM ET. Overall, Rachel Alexandra has run 7 times, winning 4 and finishing 2nd twice. As a 2-year old, she won the Golden Rod (gr. II), and was 2nd in the Pocahontas (gr. III) and the Debutante (gr. III). She'll be the heavy favorite in this one. Rachel has had a couple of works at Oaklawn since her Martha Washington race. Four Gifts (Even the Score - Agiftfromservice by Service Stripe), Flying Spur (Giant's Causeway - Lakeway by Seattle Slew), and War Tigress (War Chant - Tigresa by Tejano) finished 2nd, 4th, and 5th in the Silverbulletday on February 7 at Fair Grounds. Four Gifts, who won the Delta Princess (gr. III), finished behind Rachel Alexandra in an Allowance race at Keeneland on October 17. African Skies (Johannesburg - Rababah by Woodman) was a group III winner in England in 2008. In her only U.S. start, she was 5th in the Las Virgenes at Santa Anita on February 7. Read more about the Fair Grounds Oaks here. Rachel Alexandra also gets plenty of air time on this week's episode of Pursuit of the Crown from HRTV.

Warrior's Reward (Medaglia d'Oro - For All You Do by Seeking the Gold), who last time out finished 2nd behind everyone's All-American Dunkirk in allowance company at Gulfstream Park on February 19, tries stakes company in the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) at 5:26 PM ET. He gets a new rider this time, in Carlos Montalvo, as Calvin Borel is riding Rachel at Fair Grounds. General Quarters (Sky Mesa - Ecology by Unbridled's Song), who already showed his afinity for the Tampa Bay strip in the Sam F. Davis, deserves a lot of respect. However, the morning-line choice is Hello Broadway (Broken Vow - Nightstorm by Storm Cat), who was 2nd in the Hutcheson on January 30. The winner of the Hutcheson, Capt. Candyman Can, returned to run 4th in the Fountain of Youth, which may or may not be significant. Nowhere to Hide (Vindication - Stirring by Seeking the Gold) finished 4th in the Risen Star behind Friesan Fire, and now avoids that one by running in Florida instead of Louisiana.
