Run Carly Run (Speightstown) chased the early pace, set by Samantha's Song. She made her move in the stretch wide, but Sophisticated Lass, the 4-year old and favorite, was moving too. These two ran together for a time, but then Run Carly Run drew clear to pick up her maiden victory in her first try. Sophisticated Lass was clear of the rest, while Samantha's Song faded to 4th.

Porlamar is too much for Starland Queen

Beso Negro jumped out of the gate and was quickly clear. Her closest pursuer was Porlamar, who made her move on the turn to take over the lead. Beso Negro retreated after that. Porlamar, however, needed everything she had to hold off a steadily closing Golden Isle, who was recovering from a slow start. Also picking up ground late was Hustle. Diamond Danzig, who ended up 4th, was extremely green. She ducked in at the start, and then swerved this way and that in the stretch. Starland Queen (Saarland) was off slowly, but picked up late to finish 6th. I have to take exception with the chart notes on Starland Queen, as they say only "no threat." Granted, that is technically correct, but she did pick up a lot of places late. With a better start, she would have been right with the top horses at the end.

Other Results for March 18

Saar Treaty's (filly; Saarland - Top of the Noggin by Chief's Crown) Allowance race came off the turf and was run on the sloppy main track at Gulfstream. Saar Treaty ran like a horse that has been looking for the mud her whole life. She broke on top, but then dropped off the pace after the first quarter, sitting in fourth. She made her move on the outside and rolled to the lead on the turn, drawing off to win by better than 6. She looked like she was having some fun out there. It's interesting that Saar Treaty's maiden win was on a good turf course, and she also was 2nd in the Missy Moo I Love You Stakes on a yielding turf course. Apparently, Saar Treaty loves a rainy day. On the other hand, favorite Just Livin a Dream came home last and should probably stick with the turf.

Speightstown Belle (filly; Speightstown - Mean Imogene by Silver Deputy) raced in mid-pack early, made a bit of a move, and finished 4th in her Allowance/Optional Claiming race at Delta Downs.

Cradle of Peace (gelding; Peace Rules - Cat's Cradle by Flying Paster) got a DNF in his Claiming race at Laurel, when he fell over fallen comrade Word in Edgewise. It did not look good for Word in Edgewise, but Cradle of Peace bounced back up and finished the race riderless.

Tobin's Rules (filly; Peace Rules - Tobin's Fortune by Fortunate Prospect) stopped in his Claiming race at Tampa Bay and was basically eased, finishing last.
