Summer Bird Comes Blowin In

It's nice when you think that a horse showed promise first-time out, and then in their second start they deliver. That certainly was the case with Summer Bird (Birdstone). River Romance (Congaree) set the early pace, with first-timer Point Lookout (Medaglia d'Oro) just off the pace in 2nd. Summer Bird was off slow, as in his debut, lingering at the back of the main part of the field (only Carnival Ride was behind him). Point Lookout joined and then went by River Romance on the turn, as the latter horse tired. But, Summer Bird was making his move on the outside. He cruised to the lead. Once he made the lead, he starting loafing a little, letting Luv Gov gain, but it was an easy victory. I also have to give kudos to Carnival Ride, who is on my personal watch list, he closed from way back to pick up third. River Romance tired to 7th, but it was a much improved performance over his debut, since he led until late. Point Lookout, who was favored, also tired finishing 6th. He was very keen in the post parade and may have used up some energy there. I think he'll be much improved next time out.

Life Has Iron Fortitude

Life Goes On set the early pace. The closest pursuer was Mr. President, who was extremely rank in the early going. Iron Fortitude (Medaglia d'Oro) moved into 2nd after a half and went after Life Goes On. But he couldn't run down that one, as he had been allowed to set easy fractions. Iron Fortitude was also hampered by an inability to switch leads. Making up nice ground late was Elusive Beat, who nosed out Millennium Lakes for show. Arcodoro (Medaglia d'Oro) and Congaree Park (Congaree) raced as a team for much of the race and ended up a nose apart, in 5th and 6th.

Dueling Alex (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Rosie Dooley by Trempolino) made the lead late in his off-the-turf Allowance race at Gulfstream, but he couldn't hold off favorite Conservative and had to settle for 2nd.

Perfectionism (colt; Pleasantly Perfect - Soldera by Polish Numbers) picked up his Maiden win at Golden Gate. He was just off the pace early on, made a move wide on the turn, and drew off to win by better than 5.

Also a maiden winner was Gifts for a King (colt; Saarland - Shepherd's Star by Seeking the Gold), who ran at Delta Downs. He was in the back early, but began moving up soon after the half. He went 4 wide on the turn, and drew off for a nice win.

The turf remained soggy at Gulfstream, so Stones Throw (colt; Birdstone - Twinkler by Benny the Dip) got to run from the MTO list in his Maiden Claiming race. And, he made the most of his opportunity. He was off slowly, raced wide on the turn and passed all but the pacesetter Right of Way to finish 2nd. Looks like another Maiden Watch horse who is fond of the wet stuff.

Illegal Purse (filly; Saarland - Censored by In Excess (IRE)) was in contention from the start in her Maiden Claiming debut. She won the battle with Targeted Attack, who faded to 10th, but couldn't hold off favorite Every Day Counts and finished 2nd.

Capitol Limited (colt; Saarland - Radiantly by Mountain Cat), who was favored in his Maiden Claiming race at Oaklawn, was bothered by ducking out Denali Two Punch at the start and never really recovered. He ended up 9th.

Congar Light (filly; Congaree - Pyrite Dance by Dance Brightly) was up with the pace early in her Allowance race at Charles Town, but faded a bit late to finish 4th.
