A New Era

Sad news today about one of our 2008 stallions. Saarland, who had been pensioned earlier, died on March 11 from injuries suffered after running into a feeder.

A New Era for Maiden Watch

A new era begins for Maiden Watch, as our first 2-year old of 2009, Cater to Kitten has been entered at Keeneland on April 3. I will no longer be previewing races featuring horses by last year's stallions (Birdstone, Congaree, Medaglia d'Oro, Peace Rules, Pleasantly Perfect, Saarland, Smarty Jones, and Speightstown). However, I will continue to note allowance, and maiden special entries for their 3-year old offspring, unless it becomes overwhelming. Stakes entries will receive more attention, at least until the 2-year old stakes begin. I would encourage readers to continue to comment on any of their offspring, but they will no longer be the focus of the blog.

Now some guidelines for the 2-year olds. This blog has a North American focus. However, I will note entries and results on other continents when possible. Everyone's first start will be profiled, if humanely possible. After that, only Maiden Special Weight starts will be covered in depth, and Allowance and Stakes starts more summarily. Subsequent Maiden Claiming and Claiming races will be noted in the "Also in Action" section. If it is a slow day, I may also preview high-price Maiden Claiming races.

Royal Linkage, dam of Evil Genius (Five Star Day - Royal Linkage by Linkage), was 2 for 2 at 2, including a victory in the Colleen Stakes. Royal Linkage has produced 5 winners, including stakes winner Sailor Knot.

Carson's Pride (City Zip - Sneak Out by Belong to Me) is a full-brother to Mommie Whiz, who broke her maiden on the Fair Grounds turf on March 1 of this year. Their dam, Sneak Out, is a half-sister to 3 winners, including grade III stakes-placed Hidden Truth.

Party Hard can't catch the Street Car

Street Car went right to the lead, and soon was clear of the rest. Party Hard (Medaglia d'Oro) was off a little slowly, but then settled in fourth. He eased his way into 2nd along the rail, and ran after Street Car. Party Hard made a bit of a dent in Street Car's lead late, but had to settle for second. Watch the Replay.

Same Old Story - Broad Stone 2nd.

Broad Stone (Birdstone) is one of our most consistent runners, but also one of our most frustrating. For the fourth straight time, he ran a good race, and for the fourth straight time, he finished 2nd. Fast Max was fastest at the break, stalked by Clicker. That one took the lead in the far turn. At that point, Broad Stone hadn't even started his move from the back of the pack. He came 5 wide and then shifted between horses, making up lots of ground late in the slop, but came up just a neck short (love the chart note - "was getting to the winner."). Tannic (Saarland), our other runner, ran wide throughout and finished a photo away from third in fourth. Watch the Replay.
