Keeneland sale of 2-year-olds in training

The Keeneland sale of 2-year olds in training ended today, so I thought I'd look at how offspring by our Maiden Watch stallions, and all 1st-crop stallions, sold.

The most successful of our stallions, and the most successful first-crop sire overall at this sale, was Rock Hard Ten, whose 3 offspring (2 fillies and a colt) averaged $336,667. These included a colt out of the Deputy Minister mare Fiddlin Devon who worked an eighth in :10.2, and who sold for $440,000. One filly also worked in :10.2, and she sold for $300,000. She is out of the Mister Baileys mare America America. The other filly worked an eighth in :10.1 and sold for $270,000. She is out of Secret Ballad, by Saint Ballado.

Two Afleet Alex offspring sold, a colt and a filly with an average of $87,500. The colt, out of the Storm Cat mare, Real Cat, sold for $100,000. He had worked an eighth in :10.1. The filly, who worked a quarter in :22.1, sold for $75,000. She is out of the Alleged mare Party Cited.

Ghostzapper had one filly sell for $190,000. She worked in :10.3, and is out of Belva, by Theatrical.

Kitten's Joy and Saint Liam each had one colt sell. Kitten's Joy's colt worked an eighth in :10.1 and is out of the Rubiano mare, On Broadway. He sold for $170,000. Saint Liam's colt sold for $25,000. He worked a quarter in :22 flat and is out of Are You Up, by Eagle Eyed.

Among other first-crop stallions, Purge had two fillies sell for an average of $187,500, while an Offlee Wild colt brought $300,000. Leroidesanimaux, Eddington, Woke Up Dreamin, and Limehouse all had offspring sell for 6 figures.

Returning Workers

April 6

Gray Flash (filly; Afleet Alex - Stormy Regina by Storm Cat) worked 3 furlongs at Calder in :37.00.

Zapster (colt; Ghostzapper - Extend by Unbridled's Song) went 4 furlongs at Keeneland in :49.00.

Also working 4 furlongs at Keeneland was Tribecky (filly; Saint Liam - Double Jeopardy by Horse Chestnut (SAF)), who recorded a time of :49.80.

April 7

Dragon Lilly (filly; Ghostzapper - Classy Cara by General Meeting) worked 2 furlongs at Adena Springs, with a time of :27.00.

At the Churchill Training Center, two Kitten's Joy's offspring went 4 furlongs: Ken's Kitten (colt; Kitten's Joy - Cruise Line (GB) by Rainbow Quest) in :50.20, and Scottkeith'skitten (colt; Kitten's Joy - Miss Bergdorf by Old Trieste) in :49.60. And two others worked 3 furlongs in :37.20, Keith's Kitten (filly; Kitten's Joy - Silent Emotion by Ghazi) and Lisa's Kitten (filly; Kitten's Joy - Chianti Red by Woodman).

Results for April 6

Lucy to the Max (filly; Birdstone - I Dream by Wajima) and Mocha d'Oro (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Chopard by Silver Deputy) finished 3rd and 4th respectfully in their Maiden Optional Claiming race on the turf at Turf Paradise.

Result for April 7

Chattertown (filly; Speightstown - Chatter Chatter by Lost Soldier) finished 6th in a 6.5 furlong Allowance race at Philadelphia Park. Chattertown has made 7 starts, winning once and finishing second three times. She has earned $52,342.

Entries for April 8

Peacephilly (filly; Peace Rules - Afillyate by Blushing John) faces 10 in a mile Maiden Special Weight turf race at Tampa Bay Downs, race 4. Post time is 1:50 PM ET. Peacephilly last ran on March 31 at Tampa Bay, finishing 9th while running 5 furlongs on the dirt.

Stakes winner Saarlight (filly; Saarland - Crystal Blaze by Spectacular Bid) goes in a 6.5 furlong Allowance race for three year olds and up at Aqueduct, race 3. She'll break from post 4 in this race which has a scheduled post of 1:58 PM ET. Saarlight won the Wide Country Stakes at 7 furlongs at Laurel, in her 2nd and most recent start on March 7.

Saarlandisourland (filly; Saarland - Crypto Kate by Tabasco Cat) makes her 8th start, and her first in 2009, in a 6.5 furlong Maiden Special Weight race at Aqueduct, race 4. This one is restricted to New York-bred fillies and mares, 3-year olds and up, and post time is 2:27 PM ET. Saarlandisourland last ran on November 21 at Aqueduct, finishing 4th at a mile and an eighth.

Heir to the Stone (colt; Birdstone - Mi Mariposa by Two Punch) takes on fellow-New Yorkers in a mile Allowance/Optional Claiming race at Aqueduct for 3-year olds and up. Post time is 4:25 in this, the 8th race, and he breaks from post 8. Heir to the Stone won his first and only race of the year, a 6 furlong Allowance race at Aqueduct on March 7. Overall, he has made three starts, winning 2 and finishing 2nd once, with earnings of $68,200.

New York-bred Milord (colt; Birdstone - Lady d'Accord by D'Accord) debuts in a 6.5 furlong Maiden Special Weight contest at Aqueduct against his fellow New Yorkers. Post time is 4:55 PM ET for this one, race 9. Grade II winner Lady d'Accord, dam of Milord, earned $590,138 in her 47 race career. Lady d'Accord has produced 3 winners.

Mein Fraulein (filly; Saarland - Adena's Girl by Personal Flag) faces 6 in a mile and a sixteenth Allowance race at Oaklawn Park, race 7. Post time is 5:17 PM ET for this one for fillies and mares, 3-year olds and up. Mein Fraulein last ran on March 15 at Oaklawn Park, finishing 3rd in a 6 furlong Allowance/Optional Claiming race.

Old Man Bill (colt; Speightstown - Be Happy My Love by Formal Gold) makes his 2nd start of the year, facing Maiden Special Weight company at Charles Town at 4.5 furlongs, race 9. This one has a post of 10:27 PM ET, and a field of 11. In his first race of the year, on March 25 at Charles Town, Old Man Bill finished 3rd at 4.5 furlongs.

I watched the Keeneland sale on line. I really liked that Afleet

Alex colt. I was disappointed that the St Liam colt didn't sell for more money -but then I seem to miss what makes some sell for so much and others for so much less.

Saarlight is certainly making sure we don't forget her daddy. Mein Fraulein picked up a nice win too.

Milord didn't do much running, let's hope he learned something. I have to say that the winner in that one, May Day Now, was mighty impressive.
