News and Notes

The big news of the day is that Kentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) has been sold to Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables and Harold T. McCormick. Reports indicate that she will be transferred to Steve Asmussen's barn, but nothing official on that yet. No word yet either whether this will change her race plans. Jess Jackson has said that he plans to breed her to Curlin after she is retired. Read more about the sale here.

Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird (Birdstone) continues to gallop at Churchill Downs, and is scheduled to ship to Pimlico on May 12. Among those mentioned as Preakness opponents is Tone It Down (Medaglia d'Oro), who most recently finished third in the Tesio Stakes on May 2 at Pimlico.

Al Khali (Medaglia d'Oro) has been entered in the grade II Peter Pan Stakes on May 9. We'll talk more about that race on Friday.

A Great Runaway Over Sweet Kitten

The track was sloppy at Camarero (is there anywhere where it isn't raining). Runaway Great broke a little outwardly, but soon surged to the lead and was never challenged. There was a big battle between Pool Bash and Carson Vision for second, with the former horse prevailing. Sweet Kitten (Kitten's Joy) was off a little slowly and blocked early, but came running late to finish 5th. You can watch a replay of the race here. Note that the post positions are not the same as the program numbers. Sweet Kitten is number 4.
