Crema d'Oro (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Courageous Maiden by Broad Brush) went to the lead in her Maiden Special Weight race at Belmont (which was taken off the turf), but couldn't hold off Starship Angel and Black Orchid. The former filly won by 8. Our other horse in this one, Life's Precious (filly; Pleasantly Perfect - Precious Clare by Red Ransom), didn't seem to handle the track, finishing 6th. I'd like to see turf for that one. Watch the Replay.

Min d'Oro (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Min Elreeh by Danzig) chased the pace, was blocked, but ran evenly late to finish 5th in her Allowance Optional Claiming race at Calder. As this was a 5 furlong turf race, the blocking probably cost her a placing. Watch the Replay.

Dark Starlet (filly; Speightstown - Flowers and Vines by Blushing John) was a late scratch from her Allowance race at Belmont. Did anyone see if something happened? I had the race on, but I was listening and not watching and only heard the announcement.

Ride a Wave (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Breakwater by Boundary) did not draw in off the AE list for the 5th at Calder, a mile Maiden Special Weight on the turf.

We did have a winner today, although it was in the Maiden Claiming ranks. Goldfinder (colt; Speightstown - Strongerthanpride by Proud Birdie) got up by a short neck to take the 8th at Churchill Downs in an exciting finish. Watch the Replay.

Gray Flash (Afleet Alex - Stormy Regina by Storm Cat) stumbled in her first start on May 2 in a 2 furlong race at Calder and didn't show much after that, finishing 8th. Obviously, that effort didn't take much out of her, as she is back at it. This time, she'll go 4.5 furlongs which should help. Afleet Alex has had two starters, Gray Flash and She's a Fleet. Both started slow and didn't show much in 2 furlong races. Afleet Alex won or placed in 4 graded stakes as a 2-year old. Overall, Afleet Alex earned $2,765,800 and was Champion 3-year old colt for 2005. Gray Flash sold for $35,000 as a yearling, and is out of the unraced Storm Cat mare, Stormy Regina. Stormy Regina has produced 6 winners from 7 to run, including stakes winner Sterling Cat. Three of Gray Flash's siblings won at 2.

Marci's Way (Formal Dinner - Bower's Way by Rhinflo) also debuted in the May 2 race at Calder. She hesitated at the start and didn't run much either, finishing 9th. Marci's Way is out of the winning mare Bower's Way, who was a winner at 2. Bower's Way has produced 3 winners from 4 to run, 2 of which won at 2.

The only other filly with experience is Lynn's Princess (First Tour - Princess Alert by Katowice), who was 10th in a 2.5 furlong race at Gulfstream Park on April 1. Her dam, Princess Alert, was a winner at 2, and is a half-sister to 4 winners including grade II winner Smokey Stover.

Dazzling Halo (Indian Ocean - Clever Place by Out of Place) is by first-crop sire Indian Ocean. Grade III winner Indian Ocean has had 2 runners, which have made 3 total starts, recording 1 2nd. Dazzling Halo is the 2nd foal out of the unraced mare Clever Place. Clever Place is a half-sister to 11 winners, including stakes winners Impulsive Bidder and Clever Code.

Stakes winner Belle's Appeal, dam of American Brew (Milwaukee Brew - Belle's Appeal by Valid Appeal), was 2 for 2 at 2, and earned $101,566 in her career. Belle's Appeal has produced 3 winners, including one 2-year old winner.

Yogi's Valentine (Grand Slam - Yogi's Polar Bear by Lucky Lionel) is out of stakes winner Yogi's Polar Bear, who won the Cinderella Stakes as a 2-year old. Yogi's Polar Bear has produced 2 winners from 2 to run, both of which were debut winners at 2. Her offspring include Yogi'ssplashofgold, who finished 2nd in the Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) at 2, and who has earned $128,112 through 2009.

Angela's Ray (B L's Appeal - My Wife by Schossberg) and Grandma Me Too (B L's Appeal - Ladyinyalife by Northern Prospect) are both by B L's Appeal. Although it's a Maiden Claiming contest, I wanted to mention that Free Beer (gelding; Medaglia d'Oro - P J Floral by Baldski) and Congaree Park (colt; Congaree - King's Daughter by Ferdinand) face off in race 2 at Hollywood Park. Post time is 10:35 PM ET for this mile and a sixteenth contest. Free Beer has run 4 times without placing. He most recently finished 10th at a mile on the Santa Anita turf on February 20.
