Al Khali's Mythical Power at Stake

Gray Flash (Afleet Alex) was scratched from her race at Calder. I guess 6 days was a little quick for her return. This was actually an interesting 2-year old race, because for a change the first one out of the gate was not the winner. Yogi's Valentine and Grandma Me Too dueled early, with Yogi's Valentine establishing a clear lead. Angela's Ray, who hopped at the start, began to roll late and swept by the pacesetter for the win. Also closing ground late was Lynn's Princess, who took 2nd. Watch the Replay.

Results May 8

Casa d'Oro (gelding; Medaglia d'Oro - Six Pack Sally by Tale of the Cat) was in a good stalking position early, but flattened out to finish 5th in his Allowance race at Presque Isle Downs.

Congaree Park (colt; Congaree - King's Daughter by Ferdinand) weakened late, and Free Beer (gelding; Medaglia d'Oro - P J Floral by Baldski) made a bit of a run as they finished together in 4th and 5th at Hollywood Park. Watch the Replay.

Races 6-10 at Churchill Downs were canceled because of inclement weather (which is an understatement, it was more like all hell was breaking loose), so Cedros (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Wayward Bound by Mr. Prospector) will have to wait another day to make his debut.

Al Khali (Medaglia d'Oro - Maya by Capote) is back for another stakes try, after finishing 8th last time out in the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne on April 4 behind Musket Man. He was in a good position early in that one, before faltering late. In his only other start in this country, Al Khali won a mile and an eighth Allowance race at Gulfstream Park on March 6. As a 2-year old, Al Khali ran in Peru, winning 2 and finishing second once.

Finishing second in Al Khali's Allowance win at Gulfstream was Stately Character (Pleasant Tap - London Valley by Fast Play). Stately Character then ran in the Florida Derby, finishing 4th behind Quality Road and Dunkirk. As a 2-year old, Stately Character won the Foolish Pleasure Stakes.

Scorewithcater (Even the Score - Runaway Cater by Runaway Groom) won the Borderland Derby on February 28, and finished 3rd in the Sunland Derby on March 29. In both races, he defeated eventual Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Overall, Scorewithcater has run 9 times, with 4 wins, 2 seconds, and 1 third.

The only horse coming into the race off a victory is Hello Broadway (Broken Vow - Nightstorm by Storm Cat), who won a mile and a sixteenth Allowance race at Keeneland on April 10, going gate-to-wire. He earlier had broken his maiden in his debut on August 30 at Saratoga. In between those two starts, he ran exclusively in graded stakes. In those 4 starts, his best finish was 2nd, which he achieved both in the Nashua (gr. III) on November 2 and in the Hutcheson (gr. II) on January 30. Hello Broadway also finished 7th in Musket Man's Tampa Bay Derby.

Charitable Man (Lemon Drop Kid - Charitabledonation by Saint Ballado) won two straight as a 2-year old, including the Futurity (gr. II) at Belmont. He returned after a long layoff, to finish 7th in General Quarters' Blue Grass Stakes on April 11.

Imperial Council (Empire Maker - Jaramar Rain by Thunder Gulch) made a lot of Derby lists after a second-place finish in the Gotham Stakes behind I Want Revenge, but he couldn't duplicate that performance in the Wood. In that race, he finished 5th, after being closer to the pace early. Interestingly, Imperial Council finished 2nd in his debut behind Hello Broadway.

Brave Victory (Lion Heart - I'm In Celebration by Copelan) last ran on April 18 at Keeneland, where he finished 7th in the Lexington (gr. II) behind Advice. His immediate previous start was a 4th in the Swale (gr. II) behind This Ones for Phil and Big Drama. He has two wins in his career, a Maiden victory and an Allowance.

AL KHALI IS VERY VERY SLOW>

I heard that all horses in the Derby were on Lasix other than Pioneer of the Nile.  True?

I can't wait to see Rock Hard Ten's offspring run.  I think Rachel should be bred to him.  Result?  Superhorse!

Diane Servais - According to the chart, all the horses ran on Lasix, including Pioneerof the Nile.

By the way, something I didn't realize until I looked at the chart. The blinkered horses filled the last 4 spots in the race.

That was a nice race for Cabaret

Cowboy at Belmont today - He won with ease. Until they turned for home, Ricoriatoa at least gave him some competition. And they ended up 1st and 2nd.

It ended up a very nice day for the 2008 Stallions in this blog.

Mythical Power was the winner of the Lone Star Derby. Sara Cataldo and Double Espresso won their races as did Cabaret Cowboy. Ricoriatoa and Stones Throw were 2nd in their races. Well done all.
