Payton Delivers a Black-Eye

First of all, congratulations to Payton d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) and all her connections for taking down the grade II Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico on May 15 in front-running fashion. Watch the Replay. Hmmm... could be a huge weekend for Medaglia d'Oro. Our other runners in this one lingered near the back, as Stone Legacy (Birdstone) finished 6th and Renda (Medaglia d'Oro) 7th. No one was making up much ground. It will be interesting to see if the Preakness plays the same way tomorrow. Read more about the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes here.

Speaking of the Preakness, best wishes to the Maiden Watch horses going in that one. The Derby winner, Mine That Bird (Birdstone), the Oaks winner, Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro), and Tone It Down (Medaglia d'Oro). My wallet would prefer Tone It Down, for the Black-Eyed Susan/Preakness Double, but let's hope for good safe trips for all.

The Sun Does It

Barrel Knot got the action going in this one, by dumping his rider in the paddock. Eze Does It (Afleet Alex) looked nice and calm in the post parade. As the gates sprung, Empire of the Sun took the lead. Eze Does It started a little slow, but soon got going. Both he and Decatur Island rallied on the turn, but they couldn't catch Empire of the Sun. Empire of the Sun was drifting out, but maintained a clear lead for the victory. Empire of the Sun is the first winner for his sire, Emeritus. Eze Does It did weaken a bit late, but he outfinished the favorite, Decatur Island. Watch the Replay.

Light Green (Pleasantly Perfect) got the stakes off to the right start with a dominating 8 length gate-to-wire triumph in the Fall Aspen Stakes at Belmont Park. Doremifasollatido tried to go with her early, but she was no match. However, Doremifasollatido did hang on for second. Watch the Replay.

Heart Ashley held the early lead in the Adena Stallions' Miss Preakness Stakes. Gatorette and Mani Bhavan were pressing, while, Cinderella's Wish (Speightstown) was watching the action in fourth. Heart Ashley shook free from the pace pressure, as Gatorette and Mani Bhavan retreated. Then, Cinderella's Wish made her bid. She kept coming and coming and coming, but just missed by a head. Still a really nice try to get grade III stakes-placed. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Miss Preakness here.

Saar Treaty (Saarland) didn't run a lick in the Hilltop Stakes. She had one horse beat early and then ended up the back marker in 8th. Maybe, she's not a turf horse after all. Her best performances of late have been in off-the-turf races. The winner of the Hilltop Stakes was Blind Date, who stalked the early pace set by Listentothewindblo, and then took control in the stretch. Favorite Rena was looking like a winner late, but she flattened out and finished 2nd. Watch the Replay.

First of all, I have to wonder at the odds of Ice Baby Ice and Bail Baby Bail appearing in the same race.

This is the third time that Metallic Mist (Saint Liam - Wear by Arch) has been entered, but he has yet to start having been scratched the first two times. Metallic Mist has worked 4 times at Keeneland, including a 4 furlong work from the gate on April 21 in :47.60. He sold for $15,000 as a yearling, and is the 2nd foal out of the winning mare Wear. Wear is a full- or half-sister to 9 winners, including stakes winner Forty Nine Deeds. Saint Liam has had one starter, Tribecky, who has run twice, finishing 3rd once. Saint Liam did not run at 2, but he finished 2nd in his 3-year old debut and won his second start that year. Overall, Horse of the Year Saint Liam earned $4,456,995.

The only other first-crop sire represented in this race is Purge, who is the sire of Mocha Springs (Purge - Coffee Springs by Crafty Prospector). Mocha Springs sold for $165,000 as a yearling, and is out of stakes-placed Coffee Springs. Coffee Springs won her only race as a 2-year old, and earned $194,682 in her career. Coffee Springs has produced 4 winners, including grade III stakes-placed Pine for Java. Two of Mocha Springs siblings won at 2, and one was a debut winner.

The most experienced horse in the race is Even Wilder (Even the Score - Wild Alizone by Wild Zone), who has run 3 times. He was 4th on both April 3 and April 16 at Keeneland, and then finished 3rd at Churchill Downs on April 28. Even Wilder is the first foal out of the placed mare Wild Alizone. Wild Alizone is a half-sister to 2 winners.

Bail Baby Bail (Buddha - Maison de Reve by Mt. Livermore) and Iron Rod (Rod and Staff - Election Parade by Victory Speech) met on April 23 at Keeneland, finishing 9th and 10th. It was the first and only start for both. Bail Baby Bail is out of grade III stakes-placed Maison de Reve, who was 2 for 2 at 2. Maison de Reve earned $181,184 in her career, and has produced 5 winners. One of Bail Baby Bail's siblings was a winner at 2. Iron Rod is a full-brother to the winner The Canidate. Iron Rod's dam, Election Parade, is a half-sister to 7 winners.

The only other entrant with experience is Rib Mountain (Snow Ridge - Four Twenty Seven by Crafty Dude), who was 4th in his debut at Gulfstream Park on April 3, while running 2.5 furlongs. Rib Mountain is the first foal out of the winning mare Four Twenty Seven. Four Twenty Seven is a half-sister to 3 winners, including stakes winner Abbondanza.

Mr Will

She did it! Rachael Alexandra becomes the first filly to win the Preakness since 1924.

So, the question is: can a jockey win a triple crown? Calvin Borel, the jockey of Mine That Bird for the Kentucky Derby victory, made a great call when he decided to ride Rachael Alexandra over Mine That Bird in the Preakness.

Generally, the Belmont is not all that exciting when a Triple Crown is not possible, but this time I think the excitement is mounting. We have a 50-1 shot taking the Derby, and the first filly in 85 years taking the Preakness; both of which have stirred up incredible fan support. Imagine another sport which leaves the choice: the underdog, or the underdog?

Who is my Belmont pick? I say that the filly takes two out of three Triple Crown events, and wins the Belmont by at least one length. So much for a man’s game.
