I've been a bit out of touch, consumed with Preakness duties and recovering from Preakness duties. So, I'll use this post to catch up on everything that's happened since Saturday. I'll be updating results and 2-year old works from the past couple of days.

News and Notes

A couple of first-crop sires picked up their first winners. We already mentioned Emeritus' son Empire of the Sun winning on Friday, May 15. But, you can read more about his win here. Pollard's Vision had his first winner when Air Crew won on May 17 in Italy. And, Southern Fireball became the first U.S. winner for Southern Image on May 14.

Rib Mountain Clears the Mist

Rib Mountain went right to the lead, hounded by Bail Baby Bail. Those two dueled throughout, with Rib Mountain pulling away at the finish. Both of them were well-clear of third-place finisher Green N Goldie. Metallic Mist (Saint Liam) was in a good position early, but steadily went backwards, finishing 8th. He may not have cared for the sloppy track. Watch the Replay.

Result: May 16, 2009
Churchill Downs Race 5
Maiden Claiming ($20,000)

Did you hear Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) won the Preakness? And Mine That Bird (Birdstone) was second? Just kidding. Yes, of course this was the big news from Saturday. Tone It Down (Medaglia d'Oro) didn't fare as well, coming home in 12th, only finishing in front of Take the Points. He probably was over his head in here, but his connections may also be rethinking their decision not to use his speed. Watch the Replay. We can only wait and see if we'll get a Belmont rematch with Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird. Mine That Bird is definitely headed there, but the Rachel camp is non-commital at this point. Summer Bird (Birdstone) will also be back for the Belmont.

Despite the Odds (Speightstown) made a move wide in the Hirsch Jacob Stakes, but flattened out and finished 8th. Watch the Replay.

One Hot Toddy (Congaree) tracked the early leaders in the Regal Gal Stakes at Calder, but weakened to finish 6th. Watch the Replay.

Conchacer (Congaree) and Zigaree (Congaree) finished 3rd and 4th in the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. I thought Conchacer ran a good race, tracking the duo of Capt. Candyman Can and Cash Refund, before losing a ground late. Zigaree seemed flat, defeating only a fading Dance Caller. Watch the Replay.

The Tomboy Stakes at River Downs was taken off the turf and run at a mile and a sixteenth on the sloppy dirt track. Naughtiest (Congaree) was in mid-pack early, and then ran evenly late to finish 5th.

May 17

Tasty Temptation (Medaglia d'Oro) ran a nice race in the La Lorgnette Stakes at Woodbine. She sat off the early pace, made a move wide on the turn and was gaining at the end even while she bore out. The winner of this one was Hooh Why, who earlier took the Ashland (gr. I) at Keeneland.
