The Law Ends Maddie's Odyssey

News and Notes

The big news of the day is that Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) will get a vacation and not run in the Belmont. This means that Calvin Borel will be able to ride Mine That Bird (Birdstone). On a related note, Rachel will be featured in the August issue of Vogue magazine.

Ocean Colors, the 3-year old daughter of Winning Colors, returns to action in a 6 furlong Allowance race at Churchill Downs, race 7. She last ran on April 18 at Keeneland, where she finished 4th in a 6 furlong Allowance race.

The Law Ends Maddie's Odyssey

All were fairly well behaved in the post parade for 2-year old fillies. Jade Warrior was a little aggravated, but nothing serious. At the break, Maddie's Odyssey (Kitten's Joy) broke a tad inward, bumping with Blackwell. She soon recovered and settled in third. Letter of the Law sped to the lead, despite bobbling at the start. Wild Hare was chasing. Maddie's Odyssey made her move in the stretch, coming on the inside. She moved past Wild Hare into 2nd and put a dent in Letter of the Law's lead. She couldn't catch that one, but she was running well at the end. Definite improvement for Maddie's Odyssey, who went off at 39-1. She may have moved up on the Tapeta, but it's also likely that she benefitted from having run before. Experience paid in this one, as the top 3 had all raced previously. Watch the Replay.

D'oro Diablo (gelding; Medaglia d'Oro - Dancehall Floozy by Paramount Jet) dueled early, but Midnight Mischief (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Western Reel by Gone West) got the last word, drawing off by 7 to win their Maiden Special Weight at Woodbine (scheduled for the turf, but run on the main track).

Presents for Berti (gelding; Congaree - Agiftfrom Bertie by Monetary Gift) finished 5th in his Allowance race on the turf at Churchill Downs. He never looked comfortable in this one. He was acting up going in the gate and was fighting the rider a bit. He settled at the back and made a run, but couldn't make much headway. I have to say that the winner, Reb, really caught my eye as they moved onto the turf course. He would have won by more, except he couldn't decide whether to bite Skipadate in the stretch or go by him. Watch the Replay.

Capitol Limited (colt; Saarland - Radiantly by Mountain Cat) was wide for much of his Allowance race at Lone Star. He put in a bit of a move in the stretch to finish 5th. This one ended with a really tight photo. The stewards studied it for a long time, before putting up 1-2 Cheese Factory over 10-1 Pete's Pride. Watch the Replay.

Gallery Sculpture (filly; Birdstone - Mona Lisa Lady by El Prado (IRE)) did not want to leave the gate in her Maiden Special Weight at Canterbury (officially "dwelt"). Having spotted the field many lengths, she trailed throughout.

Aspiring Nick has not run since the Dover, but he has been working since early April. Bunker Hill has started twice in 2009, finishing second in the 7 furlong Blue and Gold Stakes at Charles Town on April 18, and 8th in the American Turf Stakes (gr. He then took on open company, finishing 8th in the Inaugural Stakes on December 27, and 4th in the Pasco (behind Musket Man and General Quarters) on January 17. Both of those races were at Tampa Bay. He then tried the Tampa Bay turf, finishing 6th at 5 furlongs on April 25. His most recent effort was an Allowance/Optional Claiming race for Ohio-breds (3-year olds and up) on May 11 at Thistledown. He finished 4th in that one. Since that race, he's recorded two bullet works at Thistledown.

The only other entrant with turf experience is the Maiden Crossed Sabres (E Dubai - Sangreal by Pleasant Colony), who was 9th in a mile Maiden race on the Indiana Downs turf on May 5. His best finish overall was 3rd in a Maiden Claiming race at Fair Grounds on December 22. He's worked once since his last race. This will be his first attempt against Ohio-breds.

Most recently, he was 5th in a 7 furlong Claiming race at Hollywood Park on April 23. His maiden win came on March 29 at Santa Anita, while going 7 furlongs. He's had one River Downs work since his last race.

Completing the field is the filly Lipstick 'N Lace (De Hero - Black Tie 'N Lace by Black Tie Affair (IRE)). She tried to run on the turf last time out in the mile and a sixteenth Tomboy Stakes on May 16, but that race was taken off the turf and run on the main track at River Downs. Lipstick 'N Lace finished 2nd in that one, after setting the pace. Previously, she broke her maiden by better than 9 while running 6 furlongs at River Downs on May 2.
