A Classical Slewing of Eze Does It

Zip Quik was looking lively in the warmups. I wasn't sure he would make to the gate with the rider intact. Eze Does It (Afleet Alex) was calm and collected. But, the best impression was made by Classical Slew, favorite in the wagering. Eze Does It broke ok, but dropped back. Going for the lead was Track N Attack, who soon built up a sizable advantage. He began to tire in the stretch, however, tumbling back into the field and eventually finishing 6th. Seizing command was Classical Slew, who had been waiting in 2nd. Grace Upon Grace ran well late and secured the place position. Eze Does It threatened to make a move late, but flattened out and was just beat out for third by Zip Quik. Coo Cachoo was a scratch. It's a Grand Slam for Andre over Hazards of Love

Hazards of Love (Saint Liam) took all the early money in this one and went off as the favorite. He debuted in blinkers and went to the post without a pony. His journey to the gate was not without incident. First, there was a saddle adjustment, and then he unseated jockey Julien Leparoux. But, Julien was soon back aboard. Hazards of Love was off a little slowly, but soon made up some ground on the outside. Grand Slam Andre took to the lead, despite breaking inward. He was pursued by Marathon Moon and Leroidugazon. Marathon Moon dropped back, as Leroidugazon drew even with the leader. Just as it looked as though Leroidugazon would go on by Grand Slam Andre, that one took off again and won by better than 7. Marathon Moon came on again late to wrestle the place spot from Leroidugazon and Justamatteroftime got up for fourth. Hazards of Love ran evenly, but greenly, and finished 5th. Experience will help. Watch the Replay.

Hill Prince Stakes

Despite the Odds (Speightstown - Lady Aloma by Cozzene) and Elmfield Boy (Medaglia d'Oro - Lemon Dove by Forty Niner) try graded stakes turf company in the mile Hill Prince Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont. Despite the Odds took his debut on March 4 at Laurel by 10 lengths, and then added an Allowance/Optional Claiming contest on April 2. He then ran in the Hirsch Jacobs Stakes (gr. III) on May 16 at Pimlico, finishing 8th. All of his races have been at 6 furlongs on the dirt. But, he is out of a Cozzene mare, which is a good predictor of turf prowess. Elmfield Boy broke his maiden at first asking on the turf at Newcastle (GB) on June 28 of 2008. He was imported to the U.S. and has made one additional start, winning a 6 furlong Allowance race on the Presque Isle Downs Tapeta on May 9. He has also not been beyond 6 furlongs.

Affirmatif (Unbridled's Song - Wichitoz by Affirmed) was touted by some as the next Big Brown, after winning first time out on the Gulfstream Park turf on February 28 while running a mile. But, he was caught in his next start, finishing 2nd in a mile and an eighth Allowance race on the Keeneland turf on April 5. He rebounded to win the Woodlawn Stakes on the Pimlico turf on May 16.

Heros Image (Partner's Hero - Not What I Do by Parfaitement) finished 3rd in the Woodlawn, behind Affirmatif. Prior to that, he won an Allowance race on the Tampa Bay turf on April 8. Heros Image's maiden victory was also on the Tampa Bay turf.

These included the Dania Beach, the Hallandale Beach, and the Palm Beach (gr. III). Then, his connections decided to try the dirt in the Wood Memorial (gr. I), where he finished 8th. A return to the turf led to an Allowance win at a mile at Belmont on May 14.

Duke of Homberg (Dynaformer - Woodlass by Woodman) finished 5th in the Dania Beach (behind Lime Rickey), won the Hallandale Beach, and finished 6th in the Palm Beach (behind Lime Rickey), after setting the pace. He has not run since the Palm Beach. In two previous starts on the Belmont turf, Duke of Homberg finished 4th in the Pilgrim (gr. III) on October 1, and 3rd in the I Take All Stakes on October 26. Both of those efforts were on yielding turf.

Florentino (Swept Overboard - Must Be Loved (JPN) by Sunday Silence) finished 3rd in the Transylvania (gr. III) at a mile and a sixteenth on the Keeneland turf on April 3, after setting the pace. That was his most recent race. He finished first or 2nd in three other turf starts, setting the pace each time.

Conservative (Unbridled's Song - Oh What a Windfall by Seeking the Gold) was 2nd in his most recent start, in the Lexington (gr. II) on the Keeneland polytrack on April 18. He broke his maiden at a mile and a sixteenth on the Gulfstream Park turf, and finished 2nd in his only other try on the surface.

Rendezvous (Victory Gallop - Halo Babe by Southern Halo) also broke his maiden on the turf, at a mile and a sixteenth at Calder on November 6.
