Spiting the Odds

News and Notes

Medaglia d'Oro has a new home, having been purchased by Darley and relocated to Darley's farm near Lexington.

Value Plus picked up his first winner when the gelding Fenceologist won a 4.5 furlong contest at Evangeline Downs on June 4.

Good luck to Mine That Bird (Birdstone) and Summer Bird (Birdstone) in the Belmont Stakes. The Belmont Stakes is my favorite of the Triple Crown races. I think it's because it's a pedigree race, you can usually throw out three-quarters of the field because of pedigree. That makes this an unusual year, because so many of the entrants should be able to get the distance, Mine That Bird, Summer Bird, Chocolate Candy, Mr. Hot Stuff, Luv Gov, Charitable Man, Miner's Escape have the pedigree to go that far. Dunkirk is a question mark, Unbridled's Songs do not usually want to go that far, but he does get stamina from his dam. I also question Flying Private at the distance. Brave Victory would seem a little short, pedigree-wise. I also am fond of the Belmont because I usually do pretty good wagering wise. No, I didn't really like Da' Tara last year, but I did have the exacta. I boxed the field minus Big Brown because I didn't think he'd get the distance (I also had a dream about the race, but enough said).

In addition to Mine That Bird and Summer Bird in the Belmont, we also have Gabby's Golden Gal (Medaglia d'Oro) and Livin Lovin (Birdstone) in the mile Acorn (gr. I) at Belmont, Munnings (Speightstown) in the grade II Woody Stephens, Renda (Medaglia d'Oro) in the Liberada Stakes at a mile and an eighth on the Calder turf, Mein Fraulein (Saarland) in the Panther Stakes at a mile at Prairie Meadows, and Conchacer (Congaree) in the Prairie Mile Stakes at Prairie Meadows. I am especially interested to see Livin Lovin, who hasn't run since the Tempted Stakes at Aqueduct on November 2, having been off because of a chipped ankle.

Spiting the Odds in the Hill Prince

The complexion of this one changed when it came off the turf. Elmfield Boy (Medaglia d'Oro), Florentino, Heros Image, and Lime Rickey were all scratched. Despite the Odds (Speightstown) broke on top, but allowed Affirmatif to take the lead on the outside. Despite the Odds eased into the lead on the turn and then took command, pulling farther and farther away from the field. The final margin was better than seven. Watch the Replay.
