Maiden Watch Triple Crown

  • Comments

Maiden Watch captures the 2009 Triple Crown, as offspring by our 2008 Stallions took all three legs. Birdstone grabbed the Kentucky Derby (Mine That Bird) and the Belmont Stakes (Summer Bird), while Medaglia d'Oro accounted for the Preakness (Rachel Alexandra). Some would say it was dumb luck, and I do admit that one reason that I chose Birdstone as a stallion to follow was to contrast him with Smarty Jones (on the other hand, I will take full credit for choosing Medaglia d'Oro, whom I chose not only because I liked his versatility as a race horse, but because I liked the look of his yearlings), but dumb luck or not, we had it. Let's hope that these three continue their stakes prowess the rest of the year.

Summer Bird excited us from his first start, a 4th place finish at 6 furlongs at Oaklawn Park (Watch the Replay). Comments included:

"I'm keeping an eye on Summer Bird.  He should have won the race but he broke last and was 6 wide. He definately looked like the best horse of the race."

"I just put Summer Bird in my Equibase virtual stable - He does look like one to watch. Also his broodmare sire is the wonderful Summer Squall - A very underated race horse and sire...."

He defeated a familiar foe in his Maiden Win, Luv Gov. This is what I wrote, "It's nice when you think that a horse showed promise first-time out, and then in their second start they deliver. That certainly was the case with Summer Bird (Birdstone)." Watch the Replay.

His next start was the Arkansas Derby (gr. II), where he finished a closing third. Watch the Replay. I can't resist repeating what I wrote that day, "..personally I can't wait to see him on those wide turns at Belmont." The rest, as they say, is history.

Stakes Success for Maiden Watch graduates on June 6 wasn't limited to the Belmont Stakes. Munnings (Speightstown) lived up to his earlier promise, blowing the field away in the Woody Stephens and Gabby's Golden Gal (Medaglia d'Oro) escaped from Rachel's shadow to pick up a grade I victory in the Acorn Stakes. That victory was also good for the pocketbook, as she paid $28. Gabby did suffer from heat exhaustion after the race and didn't get her picture taken, but she responded well to the cold water treatment and walked off the track. Livin Lovin (Birdstone) finished 4th in the Acorn, her first race back after injury. She ran a decent race, just tired a bit.

In our other Saturday stakes action, Renda (Medaglia d'Oro) was 4th in an off-the-turf Liberada Stakes, Conchacer (Congaree) was 2nd in the Prairie Mile Stakes, and Mein Fraulein (Saarland) was scratched from the Panther Stakes also at Prairie Meadows.

The stakes activity continued on Sunday, June 7, although the results were not as spectacular. Tasty Temptation (Medaglia d'Oro) finished 2nd in the Woodbine Oaks, after a horrendous start. Retraceable (Medaglia d'Oro) was a good third in the Alywow Stakes, also at Woodbine. And, River Fancy (Congaree) and Prosecca (Speightstown) were 10th and 11th in the Oakley Stakes on the Colonial Downs turf.
