Always Wildcatin' takes the Royal Battle

Battle Royal (Saint Liam) looked calm, but alert in the paddock, although I didn't see him walk around. His odds were hovering around 3-1. Favoritism went to Always Wildcatin', a nice, flashy chestnut, who was on his toes. All were pretty well behaved in the post parade. Essence Hit Man looked at the gate as if he had never seen such a creature before, but finally went in. Iceman Jack was also a little reluctant. The others loaded without fuss. Battle Royal came out a little behind the field, but was soon rushed up to pressure Always Wildcatin', who held the early advantage. They dueled for awhile, but Always Wildcatin' soon drew off to win by better than 3. Southern Pride got going late to take the place spot away from Uaintseenalligot. Concert Stage made up some ground to take 4th over a tiring Battle Royal, who also lugged in a bit. Always Wildcatin' (Wildcat Heir - Always Twining by Twining) is the 6th winner for his sire, Wildcat Heir. Uaintseenalligot has finished 3rd four times in 5 starts. I can't seem to get the Woodbine replay to work. Until I do, you can view a replay by selecting the "View Race Details" link below.

Backtalking to Dublin

The horses were fairly calm in the paddock. Backtalk did buck a little while getting his jockey up. Red Rally made a nice appearance in the post parade and broke on top. Not breaking well was Dublin (Afleet Alex), who was sandwiched by Backtalk and Victorystart and stumbled. Thiskyhasnolimit was stalking Red Rally up front, and took the lead in the stretch. He was soon passed, however, by Backtalk, who was unhurried early and then came running 5 wide. Red Rally held on for third. Late on the scene was Dublin, who rallied to pick up fourth. It was a nice win for Backtalk (Smarty Jones - Apasionata Sonata by Affirmed), who won fairly easily despite looking a little green in the stretch. This half-brother to Bsharpsonata may be one to watch. I also look forward to Dublin's next outing. A better start should make all the difference. Watch the Replay.

Pick's Express (colt; Speightstown - Program Pick by Peterhof) splashed to victory in his Allowance race at Penn National, taking the lead out of the gate and increasing his advantage throughout. It was his third victory in 7 starts. Watch the Replay.

Sweet Golden Carol (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Turn and Sparkle by Danzatore) stalked early and passed them all late, to pick up her maiden win at Hollywood Park. Watch the Replay.

Quonata (filly; Peace Rules - Danielle's Affair by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) looked good winning a Maiden Claiming contest at Belmont in her first start. Third in this one was the Congaree filly Barbie Girl, and finishing 7th was the Saarland filly Cottage Industry. Watch the Replay.

Lovesmelovesmenot (gelding; Congaree - Casanova Consort by Silver Ghost) just missed after setting the pace, and finished 2nd in his Maiden Special Weight at Presque Isle Downs. Fog obscured much of the race. Watch the Replay.

Adam's Nay (colt; Pleasantly Perfect - Senorita Spike by El Gran Senor) dueled from the start, but weakened a bit late and finished 2nd in his Maiden Special Weight at Penn National. He was, however, well clear of third. Watch the Replay.

Darlin Saarland (filly; Saarland - Rahy's Darlin by Rahy) passed one late to finish 7th in her Maiden Special Weight on the turf at Canterbury Park.

Nafath (colt; Smarty Jones - Wheatly Way by Wheatly Hall) was a DNF in his debut at Monmouth, "lost contact on final turn." It is very possible that the jockey eased him after losing the field in the fog, because he looked ok passing under the wire. I'm not kidding. Did anyone see Monmouth today? It was extremely foggy out there. Watch the Replay.

Mother Ruth (filly; Speightstown - Seven Four Seven by Colonial Affair) was scratched from her Maiden Special Weight on the Belmont turf.

Dr. Smarty Jack (colt; Smarty Jones - Hoh Buzzard (IRE) by Alhaarth (IRE)) was scratched, as his race came off of the turf.
