News and Notes

I happened to catch an impressive maiden score by Blind Luck (Pollard's Vision - Lucky One by Best of Luck), running 4.5 furlongs at Calder. In this her first start, she chased the early pace and then romped by more than 13 lengths. Watch the Replay.

Dixie Band Overwhelms Tactition

Hockley (A. P. Indy - Penny's Fortune by Storm Cat), who sold for $560,000 as a 2-year old, took most of the attention at the windows. Also getting notice from the bettors were The A. T. M. (Trippi - Regal Debutante by Vice Regent), the experienced one Straight Talk (Macho Uno - No Foul Play by Great Gladiator), and Dixie Band (Dixie Union - Tutorial by Forty Niner). Visually, Straight Talk looked best to me. Tactition (Afleet Alex - Natural Carma by Valiant Nature) looked a tad agitated in the post parade. At the start, Tactition broke into Bungee (The Cliff's Edge - Foramusementonly by Silver Deputy). Although Bungee seemed to take the worst of it, neither horse was a factor after that, finishing 8th (Bungee) and 9th (last, Tactition). Up front, favorite Hockley went to the lead, but Dixie Band went right after him. Those two separated themselves from the rest. In the stretch, Dixie Band took command, winning by better than 3. Hockley was another 3 in front of The A. T. M. and Okie Ride (Candy Ride (ARG) - Tic Tic by Geiger Counter), who brushed each other in the stretch. Jumpin Jack Cat (Newfoundland - Adoraday by Dayjur) was scratched. Dixie Band sold for $60,000 as a 2-year old. He is out of stakes winner Tutorial, who earned $198,217. Tutorial is a half-sister to stakes winner Oxford Scholar and grade II winner Seeking Regina.Watch the Replay.

Sassy Image has no Manners

At the first flash of the tote, Manners (Rock Hard Ten - Turkana by Deputy Minister) was the favorite. Things evened out later, as two of the experienced horses, Sassy Image (Broken Vow - Ideal Image by Hennessy) and Truly a Myth (Yes It's True - Amber Myth by Holy Bull) went off as the favorites. Miss Dixie Rose (Dixieland Band - Tigress Woods by A. P. Indy) took a brief lead at the break, but was soon passed by Truly a Myth and Sassy Image. Those two dueled for awhile, but Sassy Image soon took control. She continued to increase her advantage through the stretch, winning by better than 5. Miss Dixie Rose outfinished Truly a Myth for second, but it didn't hold up. The stewards determined that Miss Dixie Rose interferred with Tapachula (Tapit - Love U Fran by Phone Trick), and Miss Dixie Rose was disqualified from 2nd and placed 4th. Write When Ready (More Than Ready - Epistle by Deputy Minister) might be one to keep an eye on. She dumped her rider in the post parade and ran off a bit, got off to a slow start, and ended up beating more than half the field in finishing 5th. Manners didn't run much, beat one horse. But, she did follow the rail practically the whole way round, so it was a good learning experience. Watch the Replay.

Stakes Results

Arcodoro (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Northern Gulch by Gulch) is still a maiden, but now he's grade III stakes-placed, as he ran a great race in the Cinema Handicap on the Hollywood Park turf. He went to the lead and set all the fractions, but just couldn't hold off Oil Man. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Cinema here.

Tasty Temptation (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Parisia by Tethra) finished a decent 4th in the Queen's Plate at Woodbine. She couldn't stay with the top three, Eye of the Leopard, Mr. Foricos Two U, and Milwaukee Appeal, but she was well clear of the rest of the 13 horse field. I think her post position may have hurt a little, as she was wide for most of the race. Read more about the Queen's Plate here.

Nice try by Arcodoro - hard to believe he is still a maiden. Thanks much for the link to the video of Blind Luck's very nice win. TVG doesn't show Calder.

Did anyone watch the replay of Bet Your Boots? He won by 17 yesterday at Canterbury. Birdstone colt of course....

jonathan wulwick - sorry I don't have access to that information. Apart from high-profile horses (because of high sales prices or family connections), it is not an easy process to track down trainers of unraced 2-year olds.

I saw that race by Bet your Boots.  It was very impressive especially since it was a five furlong race.  Birdstone's two yr olds are 2 for 2 so far this yr.  His other winner was Birdstone Gulch who also won at Canterbury

I'm confused by the headline... Sunday "Sediments" or "Sentiments?"

Ted - Sediments, because our 2-year olds finished at or near the bottom.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification.
