News and Notes

The Smarty Jones' colt Backtalk (Smarty Jones - Apasionata Sonata by Affirmed) took the Bashford Manor (gr. III) at Churchill Downs. He's still looking a little green out there, but you have to love the way he finishes. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Bashford Manor here.

Another nice looking 2-year old winner on the grass at Lone Star Park. Rich Pearl (Monashee Mountain - Morning Pearl by Morning Bob) was green at times, but left them all behind. She was a non-threatening 5th in her debut, but a surface switch seemed to do the trick. I'm really becoming fond of these 7.5 furlong grass races for 2-year olds at Lone Star. Watch the Replay.

Rob Rockets over Kid Canuck

Kid Canuck (Kitten's Joy - Draxhall Jump by Tale of the Cat) looks like his daddy, chestnut with a big white blaze. Rocketman Rob (State City - Irish Starlet by Irish River (FR)) took most of the money from the bettors, but Kid Canuck got some attention early on, hovering around 5 or 6 to 1, before going off at 12-1. First-timer Chain Reaction (Act of Duty - Fine Fashion by Louis Quatorze) was off slowly. Favorite Rocketman Rob broke on top, but Kid Canuck and Crown Ruler (Peace Rules - Crown the Queen by Gulch) went after him. Those three battled for awhile, but Rocketman Rob soon pulled free. General Staff (Dixie Union - Duet by Allied Forces), who was off to a slow start, made steady progress to take the second place. Kid Canuck held well for 3rd, and Crown Ruler tired to 4th. End of My Rope (Unforgettable Max - Fappaburst by Fappiano) and Outofthedepths (Friends Lake - Simplytruth by Halissee) were scratched. (select the "View Race Details" link for a replay).

Chris Taylor - Yes, I love a 6 furlong work, especially from a 2-year old.

An amazing 2 year old gelding to watch for is named Gallant Gent. He is by Yankee Gentleman out of a Knights Choice mare. He debuted last night at Hollywood Park in a 40K maiden claimer. He had problems out of the gate - was checked twice going down the backstretch and still came out of nowhere to win the race. Just an amazing performance by a first time starter. I felt sorry for his trainer - He was claimed out of that start. Smart connections who found him.

So appreciate following the new contenders to the sport of racing.  I am particularly interested in Rock Hard Ten's progeny as well as Medaglia D'Oro's and Empire Maker's.  Rock Hard Ten should have a significant impact on horse racing in the years to come.
