Big Win for Rhonda

Hey Big Rhonda (Saint Liam - All Hollywood by War Chant) was 1-5, the first time I saw the board. She was debuting in blinkers and looked ready. That'll Be the Day (Toccet - Screen Princess by Slewacide) looked good in the paddock, and was sporiting patriotic silks. Secret Star (Five Star Day - Secret Hills by Secret Hello) was kicking her heels in the post parade. Unhinged (Dehere - Uncork by Unbridled) was scratched. Baby It's Mine (Fusaichi Pegasus - Trackofthecat by Forest Wildcat), in the #2 hole, was loaded first. She must already have a reputation in her young career. They got her in with some shoving. The load was slow, but everyone went in ok. Hey Big Rhonda leaped clear at the break, but she was soon joined by Miss Pulpit (Pulpit - Miss Grindstone by Grindstone) and Secret Star. Secret Star took the lead, but Hey Big Rhonda kept fighting. She surged back in front of Secret Star and held off Baby It's Mine for a well-deserved win. I was pretty impressed with this effort. It would have been easy for her to give up after being passed. Watch the Replay.

Daddy Wins a Battle Royal

Who's Big Daddy (Where's the Ring - Cosa Rara by Tethra) was strutting around the paddock like he knew he was hot stuff. Mobthewarrior (Mobil - Little Warrior by Woodman) was on his toes, although some of them were off the ground. I thought Doctor Jack (Where's the Ring - Hippicritical by Hail the Ruckus) looked best in the warm-up. Battle Royal (Saint Liam - Queen Marge by Grindstone) looked relaxed. Who's Big Daddy broke on top, but Battle Royal went with him. He pressed into the stretch, but then the closers came. Takiddm (Mutakddim - First Corsage by Grindstone), Doctor Jack, and Sir Heart Throb (Olmodavor - Royal Distraction by Maria's Mon) were all coming, but Who's Big Daddy held them all off to take the Clarendon Stakes. Battle Royal held on for a long time, but he had to steady and gave way, finishing 7th. Still, it was a good effort, despite the final placing. Southern Pride (D'wildcat - Native Expressions by Pentelicus) was scratched.

L. A. Girl, She's a Fleet

Swan's Wing (Tenpins - Cherokee Float by Cherokee Run) was bucking on the way to the post parade. The favorite, L. A. Girl (Golden Missile - Bandeau by Quiet American), looked good. A couple were balking at the loading, and Shine Ola (Doneraile Court - Bright and Shiny by El Prade (IRE)) reared in the gate. L. A. Girl broke on top, but Shine Ola was in close pursuit. Sigh (Sir Cherokee - Kissin You by You and I) was also chasing. L. A. Girl could never shake free from Shine Ola, but neither did Shine Ola gain, and they finished 1-2. Zipper Zapper (City Zip - Storm Front by A. P. Indy) closed into third while racing greenly. She's a Fleet (Afleet Alex - Society Gal by Linkage) raced in mid-pack throughout, but she did gain some late, finishing 6th. Bates Cat (Consolidator - Bates Choice by Bates Motel) was scratched. Santa Baby Overwhelms Laheen

Laheen (Ghostzapper - Assess by Seattle Slew) is a nice looker, with some long legs. Wasted (Alke - Boston Song by Boston Harbor) was the favorite, but I thought longshot Dreaming for Now (Medallist - Bafferta by In Excess (IRE)) looked good. Tee Game (El Corredor - Steph's Tee by Lil E. Tee) reared at the gate, but the rest went in pretty easily. Red Release (Purge - Carson Kit by Carson City) went for the lead, but was pressured by 90-1 Two Wonders (Three Wonders - Royal Advantage by Regal Classic). Those two were soon joined by Wildcat Marie (Wildcat Heir - Miss Rachel Marie by Wild Rush). For awhile it looked as though any of those three could take it, but then Santa Baby (Touch Gold - Wild Cure by Cure the Blues) came rolling on the outside to go by all of them. Laheen (Ghostzapper - Assess by Seattle Slew) was with the winner for awhile, but couldn't keep pace. She ran evenly late, finishing 8th.

Dinner With D C Hunts the Fox

Dinner With D C (Dixie Union - Casual Feat by Cozzene) was the most striking filly in the prelims. Also attracting attention was Leopard Rock (Speightstown - Wild Heart Dancing by Farma Way), who was a little aggravated in the paddock. Fox Hunt (Saint Liam - Zorra by Silver Fox) broke on top, but was passed by Dinner With D C and Tizaclancygirlnow (Tiznow - Im a Dixie Girl by Dixie Union). They stayed tight for awhile, but then Dinner With D C took control. She continued to increase her lead throughout, getting the win by better than 6. Leopard Rock rallied into second, while Tizaclancygirlnow was 3rd, and Fox Hunt weakened to 6th. Cristiane (Siphon (BRZ) - Southern Schemer by Northern Baby) was scratched. Watch the Replay.

Thiskyhasnolimit Over Baby Afleet

The track was sloppy by the time this one went off. Thiskyhasnolimit (Sky Mesa - Lovely Regina by Deputy Minister), who finished 2nd behind future Bashford Manor winner Balktalk in their debuts, was the heavy favorite in this one, going off at less than even money. Also looking good in the paddock were Worldly (A. P. Indy - Urbane by Citidancer) and Marathon Moon (Malibu Moon - Showcase by Storm Cat). Thiskyhasnolimit and Shimmering Forest (Eurosilver - Sparkling Forest by Forest Wildcat) dueled early, but then Thiskyhasnolimit began to pull away and away and away. The final margin was 7. Worldly closed ground late to take second, and Shimmering Forest hung around for third. 3-year old Stakes Results July 4

Just Ben (colt; Speightstown - Chip by Norquestor) set the pace in the Dwyer (gr. II), but he tired in the stretch, finishing 6th. Warrior's Reward (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - For All You Do by Seeking the Gold) stumbled badly at the start and was out of it for most of the race, but he did rally into third. The winner was Kensei. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Dwyer here.

Light Green (filly; Pleasantly Perfect - Green Light by Sheikh Albadou (GB)) went head-to-head with Heart Ashley for most of the Prioress Stakes (gr. I). She shook free from that one, but couldn't hold off her stablemate, Cat Moves, and ended up 2nd. Gabby's Golden Gal (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Gabriellina Giof (GB) by Ashkalani (IRE)) stumbled at the start and trailed throughout. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Prioress here.

Oriental Sunshine (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Kristi's Sunshine by Miswaki) pressed the pace in the Firecracker Stakes at Mountaineer, but tired late to finish 6th.

Neither Quick in Motion (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Trisha Quick by Deputy Minister) nor Himynameissarah (filly; Saarland - Pacific Island by Grand Slam) had much impact in the Northbound Pride Stakes at Canterbury, finishing 7th and 9th.

Other 3-year old Results July 4

Mindy Sue (filly; Pleasantly Perfect - Drifa by Tabasco Cat) stumbled badly at the start of her Allowance race at Canterbury, but recovered late to run down the pacesetter for the win.

Maxwell's Demon (gelding; Speightstown - Indy Pendence A. P. Indy) won a Maiden Claiming race at Fort Erie. One would think Maxwell's Demon would be a natural on July 4th, as his dam is Indy Pendence. But, I'm not sure it works, since Fort Erie is in Canada.

Also picking up a Maiden Claiming victory was Peace Reigns (filly; Peace Rules - Diamond Dottie by Eagle Eyed), who went gate-to-wire at Louisiana Downs. Watch the Replay.

Don't You Linger (gelding; Congaree - So Long Dearie by D'Accord) dueled early in his Maiden Special Weight on the turf, but tired to 7th. Too Amenable (colt; Pleasantly Perfect - Lady She Is Top by Two's a Plenty) seemed to benefit from the speed duel, but he was just outfinished by Globemaster, and finished second. Watch the Replay.

Artisan (filly; Smarty Jones - Alchemilla by Deputy Minister) was at the back early, but closed very well. He couldn't catch a runaway winner, but bested the rest in second in his Allowance race on the Delaware Park turf. Watch the Replay.

Red Bird Rules (filly; Peace Rules - Twirling Angel by Saint Ballado) chased the pace early, made a move, but weakened some late, finishing 4th in her Maiden Special Weight at Lone Star Park. Watch the Replay.

Ritzy Jones (colt; Smarty Jones - So Ritzy by Darn That Alarm) did some running late, but couldn't crack the top 3, finishing 4th in his Allowance race at Philadelphia Park. Watch the Replay.

Not a good day for the Birdstones. S.S. Stone didnt fire as expected. I think Dear Marylou should stretch out as she was closing nicely and galloped out well. 5.5 seemed too short for her.

Jaystone raced back WAY too soon, one week since his win.
