News and Notes

Lord Shanakill (colt; Speightstown - Green Room by Theatrical (IRE)) won the group I Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly in France by a head. Thanks to K. Robb for posting this in the comments of yesterday's post. Also thanks to lordatwar for tweeting the news this morning, which I promptly retweeted. Read more about the Prix Jean Prat here.

Best Actor (Rock Hard Ten - Dance for Dixie by Unaccounted For) was scratched from his race at Arlington. This was not unexpected, since he was part of an entry with the same Jockey named on both. His stablemate, Call Shot (Tale of the Cat - Sweet Monarch by Wavering Monarch) finished third. The winner was Prince Rooney (Tale of the Cat - Rooneys Princess by Deputy Minister) who took the lead early and didn't look back. It's nice to see a decendant of Princess Rooney continuing the winning family tradition. Watch the Replay.

Vivid Colors the Quick Breeze

Vivid Colors (Roman Ruler - Scene Maker by Unbridled's Song) was the most eye-catching in the paddock, although Beautiful Song (Unbridled's Song - She's a Beauty by Storm Cat) sure is a pretty thing. A number of the fillies were acting up in the post parade including Autumn Eyes (Stormy Atlantic - Caustic Remark by Mutakddim) and Beautiful Song, who didn't seem to care for the sloppy track at all. On the other hand, Quick Breeze (Ghostzapper - Quick Temper by A. P. Indy) looked calm and collected, but ready to run. They all went into the gate smoothly, but Vivid Colors came out best, sprinting to a clear lead early. Autumn Eyes and second choice Tapitsfly (Tapit - Flying Marlin by Marlin) went after her, and these three put a lot real estate between themselves and the rest. Vivid Colors was too tough for the other two and drew off impressively for a better than 5 length victory. Tapitsfly hung around for 2nd, while There She Is (Medaglia d'Oro - Darby Shuffle by Darby Creek Road) moved into third. Quick Breeze (Ghostzapper - Quick Temper by A. P. Indy) was 6 wide on the turn, but still made up lot of positions, finishing fourth. The field was very strung out at the end, and this is probably a throw out race for a number of them. I think I was right about Beautiful Song not caring for the slop, she was 9th. Roman Ruler, sire of Vivid Colors, now has 5 winners in his first crop, including 3 today alone. Watch the Replay.

3-year old Stakes Results July 5

Munnings (colt; Speightstown - La Comete by Holy Bull) cruised with the greatest of ease in the Tom Fool (gr. II). It may have helped that favorite Fabulous Strike was scratched, but I'm not sure his presence would have made any difference. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Tom Fool here.

Mullins Beach (filly; Speightstown - Treasure Beach by Silver Deputy) was equally impressive in the Ontario Damsel Stakes on the Woodbine turf. She sat off the pace set by the big favorite Woodsmoke, and then took control. Watch the Replay.
