William Conquers the Ellis Turf

The turf was rated yielding for this one, which probably accounted for the scratches of Consulate (Pulpit - Conquestress by Cherokee Run), Cry (Cryptoclearance - Resist Risk by Roanoke), Mickejoe (Bernstein - Harmattan by Thunder Gulch) (Mickejoe is entered at Presque Isle on Friday), Our Second Fitz (Seattle Fitz (ARG) - Evening Shadows by Dixieland Band), and Worldbridge (Grand Reward - Darling L by Premiership). William's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Blush by Menifee), who was on his toes in the post parade, went off as the slight favorite over Luckylead (Harlan's Holiday - Ashwood C C by Cryptoclearance). As the gates opened, Harrods Creek (Langfuhr - Float and Sting by Two Punch) was off slowly. Wildly Concerned (Deputy Wild Cat - Miss Concern by Concern) flipped before loading, and then broke in the air. Despite this, he was amongst the leaders early. Moon Over Goshen (Malibu Moon - Search the Sea by Seeking the Gold) broke quickest, with Luckylead pressing. Woodman's Charm (Woodman - Bold Princesita by Silver Charm) was also in the early mix. William's Kitten was just off these, in about 5th. Luckylead hit the front in the stretch and seemed home free, but William's Kitten was coming. He wore down the leader and got the victory. Codoy (Bernstein - Puype's Dream by Kris S.), who hopped at the start, made up a lot of ground to take third. William's Kitten is the first turf winner for Kitten's Joy, and his third winner overall.

Too Macho for the King and the Saint

Not Macho Any More (Macho Uno - Kipper Quila by Kipper Kelly) held the early attention of the bettors, but Good to Be Seen (Montbrook - Burn Brightly by American Chance) was favored when the gates opened. King Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Santo Mio by Southern Halo) was acting up a bit as the post parade began. Saint Eligius (Saint Liam - Great Connection by Dayjur) bounded away from his pony, as did Good to Be Seen. You could tell that they were all first timers during the load, as all were reluctant to enter. Good to Be Seen was bucking in the gate. Tom Durkin reported, "Good to Be Seen seems a little rambunctious." King Kitten, Good to Be Seen, and Saint Eligius all battled for the lead early. Not Macho Any More, who had been sitting just off the pace, made a big sweeping move on the outside to go by them all, except King Kitten, who showed some grit staying with Not Macho Any More. In the end, Not Macho Any More drew off to win by better than 2, but King Kitten was a good 8 lengths in front of the rest. Calvello (Tapit - Sainttwok by Saint Ballado) made up a lot of ground late to take third, while Good to Be Seen and Saint Eligius tired to 4th and 5th. Stocks (Concorde's Tune - Silk Stocks by Medieval Man) was a scratch. Watch the Replay.

Letsgetitonmon is a Hazard to Love

Hazards of Love (Saint Liam - Spring Rush by Wild Rush) was looking pretty frisky in his stall in the paddock. Lots of chrome on this chestnut colt, three white socks up to the knee. He was the favorite when the betting started and remained so at post time. Petecarol (Not For Love - Diva Girl by Saint Ballado) was a little excited as the jocked mounted. Tiz a Theme (Tiznow - Theme Song by Dixieland Band) made a favorable impression. At the break, they were very well-bunched, with Letsgetitonmon (Maria's Mon - Cafe Concerto by Tempolino), Hazards of Love, Cherokee Mate (Cherokee Run - Miswaki Lady by Miswaki), and Red Oak Ridge (Sky Mesa - Kisses for My Gal by Unbridled) just heads apart. Letsgetitonmon emerged with a clear lead, but a fresh challenge came in the form of Petecarol. Petecarol might have caught Letsgetitonmon, if he hadn't been so green. As it was, he had to settle for second. Definitely one to watch next time. Hazards of Love held well to take the show spot. Tiz a Theme made up ground to finish 4th, despite ducking in. A two year old filly to add to the watch list - CHILUKKI'S SONG, (Elusive Quality – Chilukki) You may recall Chilukki was the Champion two year old filly of 1999. Unfortunately, Chilukki died in 2007 and this is her last foal. Chilukki’s Song’s three half siblings didn’t do much on the track, but this filly won her first start impressively at Delaware on Monday, July 13. She had a poor break, but went on to win by 6 ¼ lengths going 6F in 1:10 4/5. Since Darly already owns her, we won’t see her being sold for obscene amounts of money. I expect we’ll see her in one of the stakes races at Saratoga this summer.

Thanks Laura R - I will keep an eye out for Chilukki's Song.

Only 5 days to Del Mar - my favorite track.
