News and Notes

Just had to comment on a couple of great names that I saw amongst the day's maiden results. How about the 2-year old colt, Blame the Jockey (Posse - Miss Terasita by Prized), who won at Emerald Downs. Or the 3-year old colt, Capt Obvious (Came Home - Enlightening by Cozzene), who won on the turf at Arlington Park.

Just Gettin Close to Gray Flash

A full field went forward in this one in the rain at Calder, with no scratches. The favorite was Golden Honey (Olmodavor - Golden Toast by Hennessy), who had finished 3rd in her only previous start. Gray Flash (Afleet Alex - Stormy Regina by Storm Cat) was 12-1 as the gates opened. Brilhante (City Zip - Midnite Mistress by Honour and Glory) and Naughty Visions (Omega Code - Visions of Viv by Wild Escapade) battled early, but Gray Flash was coming from her outside post. Brilhante tired, but the other two went on with it. Gray Flash hit the lead, but Just Gettin Close (Margie's Wildcat - No Beans by Unreal Zeal), who had been tracking the early pace, moved by to get the win. 55-1 shot Empress Maria (Western Pride - Due the Empress by Devil His Due) was along late for third. It was a much improved effort for Gray Flash. It was good to see her involved from the start. Margie's Wildcat, sire of Just Gettin Close, has had two starters, and both of them have won. Watch the Replay.

Grillete Gets a Break Over Yala Yala Bull

It was raining again in Puerto Rico, and the track was labeled muddy. Grillete (Tenpins - Hearts Delight by Clever Trick) was the big favorite on the board, which made sense since he had defeated everyone first time out, except the new player Yala Yala Bull (Saint Liam - Maltese Indy by A. P. Indy). Do Re Mi Concerto (Concerto - Glitter Lady by Glitterman) made a good impression in the warmup. Yala Yala Bull missed the break and was several lengths behind quickly. That was pretty much all she wrote for him. Currutaco (Three Wonders - Mines in Gear by Golden Gear) took the lead early, but he had no answer for Grillete, who swept into the lead and won easily. Do Re Mi Concerto ran on for second and Currutaco held on for third. Wild Candy (Candy Ride (ARG) - Miss Joker by Wild Again) took fourth. Watch the Replay (July 19, race 4).

Auspicious Risks to Look Purrrfect

Beenie (Gone West - Santona (CHI) by Winning) and Our Second Fitz (Seattle Fitz (ARG) - Evening Shadows by Dixieland Band) were scratched from this one. Mt. McSauba (Pulpit - Summer Home by Easy Goer) was the favorite. Looks Purrrfect (Kitten's Joy - On Broadway by Rubiano) is a striking gray. A number of these looked good in the warmup including the favorite Mt. McSauba, Protection Game (Harlan's Holiday - Silks of Gold by Golden Act), and Auspicious Risk (Successful Appeal - Gambling Girl by Secret Claim). Looks Purrrfect broke on top, but soon dropped back. Okie Ride (Candy Ride (ARG) - Tic Tic by Geiger Counter) took the first call, with Protection Game pressing. Auspicious Risk was just behind these in third. Auspicious Risk overtook the leaders in the stretch and got the victory. Buggs Pride (Western Pride - Glitterball by Northern Afleet) and favorite Mt. McSauba made up ground late to take 2nd and 3rd. Looks Purrrfect finished 6th, but he learned a lot. He was on the rail basically the whole way and galloped out strong. Put your money down on this one next time out. Watch the Replay.
