Kid Canuck Surges Past Kirkland Lake

The rains came to Woodbine and the race was moved from the turf to the Polytrack. Kid Canuck (Kitten's Joy - Draxhall Jump by Tale of the Cat) looked good in the prelims. Thisonesforelmo (Consolidator - Unbridled Rage by Unbridled), a first-timer by freshman sire Consolidator, took the early money, but U S C Fight Song (Unbridled's Song - Shake the Yoke (GB) by Caerleon) was favored at the break. Both of these were showing good energy before the race. Devil in Willie (Orchid's Devil - Whererainbowsmeet by Oka Revolt) was acting up in the post parade, and then as they started to load. He was a late scratch. Kid Canuck hopped a bit at the start, but it didn't cost him much. Up front, Kirkland Lake (Pioneering - Miss Nureyev by Nureyev) and Kings Conquest (Chapel Royal - Georgian Queen by Siphon (BRZ)) were dueling, with U S C Fight Song sitting just off of these. Kid Canuck was blocked for a time, but once he got free, he was making up ground quickly. He surged late and just caught Kirkland Lake. The margin was a short nose. Kid Canuck is winner number 4 for Kitten's Joy. Watch the Replay.

No Faulting this Turn of Foot

This one stayed on the turf, which was labeled soft. Cry (Cryptoclearance - Resist Risk by Roanoke) and Doitndubai (E Dubai - Dharma by Zilzal) were scratched. Bulletproof Spirit (Roman Ruler - Nijinskys Princess by Gulch), the first-timer by freshman sire Roman Ruler, was the big favorite. Foot Fault (Kitten's Joy - Lovely Cozzene by Cozzene), who is a pretty gray, was bouncing in the post parade. At the load, Marathon Moon (Malibu Moon - Showcase by Storm Cat) was being difficult, as Foot Fault waiting patiently. Justamatteroftime (Taste of Paradise - Green Mill by Green Dancer) broke best and pulled clear by several lengths. Marathon Moon was the closest pursuer, with Foot Fault just behind. Justamatteroftime continued to lead into the stretch, but he left a big hole open on the rail. Foot Fault moved through this opening professionally, and surged for the win. Marathon Moon weakened, but held third. This was a very nice looking win for Foot Fault, and a great ride from Jon Court. Foot Fault, who is the 5th winner for Kitten's Joy, is owned and trained by Dale Romans, who trained Kitten's Joy.

Full Horse has Just Enough Power Over Kijo

The track was labeled good for this contest, and the bettors favored To Heir Is Human (Wildcat Heir - Epistola by Buckaroo). Kijo (Kitten's Joy - Sunday Sport by Honour and Glory) was getting plenty of attention too, going off at 5-2. Kijo looked good in the post parade, animated, but not overly excited. On the other hand, Americantour (American Spirit - Dancer On Tour by Great Above) was acting up a bit. Full Horse Power (Black Mambo - Scarlet Combo by Scarlet Ibis) outbroke the rest, and was soon several lengths clear. Everyone else got off fairly evenly, except Illicit Lover (Graeme Hall - Tension Point by Danzig), who was off slow. Also, To Heir Is Human and Plant City Red (Concerto - Invitetheblues by Cure the Blues) bumped at the start. Americantour pressed Full Horse Power briefly, but then faded. More persistant chasers were Overtown (Black Mambo - Sweet Judgement by Judge Smells) and Kijo, who kept his spot on the rail. It looked as though Overtown would threaten Full Horse Power's supremacy, but it was Kijo who made things interesting. He closed a lot of ground late to come up just a neck short. Watch the Replay.

Worstcasescenario Gets the Glories

No turf at Belmont for the 2-year olds, so this one was run on the dirt. Classic Affair (Awesome Again - Wichitoz by Affirmed), Embroidery (More Than Ready - Flagrant by Rahy), Tribeca (Value Plus - Littletalkintootie by Regal Affair), and Whydah (More Than Ready - Riverboat Miss by Storm Cat) were scratched. MTO only entrant Worstcasescenario (Forbidden Apple - Stacie's Halo by Halo) was favored, but Crimson Glory (Ghostzapper - Buy the Sport by Devil's Bag) was getting plenty of respect. Crimson Glory was swishing her tail and shaking her head a bit in the post parade. Crimson Glory broke well and went to the lead, but Worstcasescenario was staying close. In the stretch, Worstcasescenario moved to the lead and pulled away, winning by better than 5. But, Crimson Glory was able to hold off a hard charging Rumors of Glory (Storm Cat - Indy Glory by A. P. Indy), securing the place spot for a very nice debut. Watch the Replay.

Insightful Too much for Becky's and Scottkeith's

Like the earlier 2-year old race at Belmont scheduled for the turf, this one was also run on the main track. This led to the scratching of Calipari (Mr. Greeley - Concentric by Shadeed), Mighty Fine Day (Five Star Day - Miss Alethia by T. V. Commercial), and Satum (Tumblebrutus - Sacramentada (CHI) by Northair). The Becky's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Caterette by Cozzene) and Scottkeith'skitten (Kitten's Joy - Miss Bergdorf by Old Trieste) entry was favored early, but Gantry (Pulpit - Rhum by Go for Gin) went off as the favorite. Insightful (E Dubai - Insight to Hope by Copelan) was looking good in the paddock. Gantry broke first, but Insightful went with him. Also up there early on was Exhi (Maria's Mon - Soldera by Polish Numbers). Not far off of these was Becky's Kitten. Scottkeith'skitten was off slowly. Insightful moved to the lead in the stretch and took the win, holding off Exhi, who put in a nice bid. Becky's Kitten tired to 5th and Scottkeith'skitten finished 7th. Watch the Replay.

Trincadeiro Skips Home

Barely an Angel (Buddha - Saint Aubin by Saint Ballado) was the choice of the bettors, but Skippin' Home (Afleet Alex - Second Symphony by Mining) was a respectful 5-1. She looked good in the paddock. No one was really knocking my socks off in the post parade. They loaded fairly smoothly, although the view of the gate wasn't the best. There's a Place (Battle Cat - Black Teddie by Bold Executive) outbroke the field and took the early lead. Let's Rocket (Golden Missile - Caribbean Sol by Woodman) was stalking, with Artois (Crafty Dude - Dance Gear by Golden Gear) and Trincadeiro (Pollard's Vision - Freisa by Lil's Lad) sticking close. Skippin' Home (Afleet Alex - Second Symphony by Mining) was off a little late, but secured a good position. Trincadeiro and Let's Rocket both moved late, but Trincadeiro got the jump on the inside and took the victory. Skippin' Home started running late and finished 5th. Trincadeiro is the 5th winner for freshman sire Pollard's Vision. By the way, it would be incredible helpful if Assiniboia Downs would adopt the multi-color saddle cloths like everybody else.

Since then, she's worked 5 furlongs in 1:01.40 at Woodbine on July 15. This one is scheduled for 6 furlongs on the turf, but with the deluge that they had yesterday at Woodbine, I am a little skeptical. Manners is a half-sister to stakes-placed Turk, who finished 3rd in the 2009 San Miguel Stakes. Turk finished 2nd in his only start at 2. Manners' dam, Turkana, is a half-sister to 3 winners. Rock Hard Ten's 6 runners have made 7 total starts, recording 2 wins, 1 second, and $82,354.
