News and Notes

Sad news reported today of the euthanization of grade I winner Mandy's Gold. She is the dam of 2 horses mentioned on this blog, 3-year old colt Smarty's Gold, by Smarty Jones, and 2-year old colt Golden Ghost, by Ghostzapper.

Overlapping King Kitten

This one came off the turf, and Steve's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Cat's Prize by Golden Missile), Bridgetown (Speightstown - Ellesmere by Tabasco Cat), Drover (Storm Cat - Goulash by Mari's Book), and Satum (Tumblebrutus - Sacramentada (CHI) by Northair) were scratched, while MTOs In Just We Trust (Forest Danger - Trust Fund by Conquistador Cielo) and Fayoum (Friends Lake - Katie Be Quick by Carson City) got to run. King Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Santo Mio by Southern Halo) was made the favorite off of his 2nd place finish on July 16, and he looked good in the paddock. Wow Wow Wow (Broken Vow - Caged Glory by Honour and Glory) was on his toes, and El Commodore (El Prado (IRE)) - Fancy Clancy by Rahy) was looking a little too excited. Pendulum (Songandaprayer - St Lucinda by St. Jovite) got a strong warm-up. King Kitten broke well and took the early lead, but he had company from Fayoum and Pendulum. They stayed this way for awhile, but King Kitten tired in the stretch. At the same time, Overlap came flying wide and went by everybody for the win. Fayoum and Pendulum hung on for 2nd and 3rd, and In Just We Trust closed well to take 4th. King Kitten ended up 5th. Watch the Replay.

Tapitsflies By Lisa's Kitten

This one was also run on the main track and the distance was reduced to 7 furlongs (originally scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the turf). Scratched were Beautiful Song (Unbridled's Song - She's a Beauty by Storm Cat), Circleboundbay (Langfuhr - Athruz Breeze by Alphabet Soup), Classic Affair (Awesome Again - Wichitoz by Affirmed), Crystal Ocean (Stormy Atlantic - Luth de Crystal (FR) by Crystal Glitters), Dad's Crazy (Langfuhr - Charismatic Lady by End Sweep), More Amour (Exchange Rate - More d'Amour by Tour d'Or), Ms. Thanksgiving (Formal Dinner - Dance On the Green by Green Dancer), and Straight A Student (Posse - Dynamic Girl by Bold Executive). Most of the betting action was centered on Tapitsfly (Tapit - Flying Marlin by Marlin). As they went to the post, C. C. Coco (Tiznow - Itsmylife by Storm Cat) wheeled and dumped rider Kent Desormeaux and took off. She was a late scratch. Actually, I was pretty impressed with her athleticism, as she almost went down and then bounced up to run away. At the break, Lisa's Kitten was off ok, but it was Leopard Rock (Speightstown - Wild Heart Dancing by Farma Way) who took the early lead. Tapitsfly was pressing and she soon moved to the front. Pretty B (Matty G - Pretty City by Carson City) put in a run, but could do no better than 2nd. Zilva (Successful Appeal - Spellmaker by Storm Cat) and Jill's Kitten ran pretty evenly, finishing 3rd and 4th. Watch the Replay.

Mobil Unit Takes Away Billy's Punch

This one stayed on the turf, and only Part of the Action (Ecton Park - Faux Pas (IRE) by Sadler's Wells) and MTO entrant Bear's a Winnah (Tapit - Lyd's a Winnah by Outflanker) were scratched. Mobil Unit (Mobil - Stop Looking by Dr. Adagio) attracted most of the attention at the windows. Power Wow (Langfuhr - Double Wow by With Approval) looked the best to me before the race. There was some shoving at the gate, but everyone got in ok. Favorite Mobil Unit broke on top and went right to the lead. Billy's Punch (Saint Liam - Slewzig by Seattle Slew) broke ok, while Ascot Matt (Medallist - Ascot Gold by Mutakddim) was off slowly. Insensitive (Heckle - Fighting Mom by Fighting Fit) was up close for awhile, but tired in the stretch. Where Is'em (King Cugat - Watch Rachel by Inciderator) was a more persistent pursuer, but he could do no better than 2nd. Both Power Wow and Ascot Matt closed well late for third and fourth. But, the glory belonged to Mobil Unit and his 3 3/4 length victory. Watch the Replay.

Point Lookout (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Potomac Bend by Polish Numbers) was in a good spot in his Allowance/Optional Claiming race at Delaware, but weakened and finished 8th. Watch the Replay.

Esperanza d'Oro (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Seasonal by Deputy Minister) made a move to get into contention, but then flattened out to finish 10th in her Allowance/Optional Claiming race on the Saratoga turf. I'm thinking that the yielding turf did not agree with her. Watch the Replay.

Run Smart One (colt; Smarty Jones - Literary Light by Ide) was scratched from his Starter Allowance at Delaware Park.

Another attempt to run on the Saratoga turf. It looks like sunshine today and tomorrow at Saratoga (unlike here, where we are working on the ark), so we'll see. Regardless, we are covered, as Dean's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Summer Theatre by Ide) is in the main body of the race, and Cutter (Saint Liam - Brite Diamond by Deputy Minister) and Saint Eligius (Saint Liam - Great Connection by Dayjur) are Main Track Only entrants.

Dean's Kitten has run twice, finishing 3rd on the Keeneland Polytrack on April 9 and 3rd at 6 furlongs on the Belmont turf on July 11. He's had a couple of works since his Belmont race, including a 4 furlong work at Belmont on August 2 in :51.69. He is out of the winning mare Summer Theatre, who has produced 2 winners. Kitten's Joy's 22 runners have made 45 combined starts, recording 6 wins, 11 seconds, 7 thirds, and $213,771. He's had two winners on the turf, and has also had winners on the dirt, Polytrack, and Tapeta.

Cutter has run once, closing to finish 3rd at Delaware Park on July 14. He is the first foal out of the winning mare Brite Diamond. Brite Diamond is a half-sister to grade I winner Fowda and 2 other winners. Saint Eligius has also made one start, running in a 5 furlong race at Belmont on July 16. In that race, he battled for the early lead, before tiring to 5th. He has had one work since his start, going 4 furlongs at Belmont in :48.66 on July 29. Saint Eligius is out of the winning mare Great Connection, who was a winner at 2. Great Connection has produced 4 winners, including stakes winners Guana and Great News. Guana and Great News both won at 2. Saint Liam has sired 20 runners, which have made 31 combined starts, registering 4 wins, 5 thirds, and $81,779.

AE entrant Novel Notion (Tale of the Cat - Mini Chat by Deputy Minister) and Mill Pond (Friends Lake - Sunday Play by Defensive Play) finished behind Dean's Kitten on the Belmont Park turf on July 11, in 5th and 9th. It was the first and only start for both. Novel Notion, who sold for $140,000 as a yearling, is a half-brother to grade I Dixie Chatter. Dixie Chatter is also a grade II winner on turf, and won 2 races at 2. Overall, he earned $464,606. Mill Pond was a $130,000 yearling, and is a half-brother to one winner and a full-brother to one winner. His dam, Sunday Play, is a half-sister to 7 winners, including group III turf winner Perfect Sunday.

Luckylead (Harlan's Holiday - Ashwood C C by Cryptoclearance) has run twice. He finished 7th on the dirt at Churchill on June 20, and 2nd on the Ellis Park turf on July 16, behind William's Kitten. Luckylead was a $52,000 yearling purchase. Stakes winner Ashwood C C, dam of Luckylead, was a winner at 2 and earned $581,329 overall. Luckylead is her first foal.

Mesa Vista (Sky Mesa - Gata Secreta by Spinning World) was 6th in his only start, at Churchill Downs on June 4. He sold for $110,000 as a weanling, $200,000 as a yearling, and $500,000 as a 2-year old. Mesa Vista is out of the unplaced mare Gata Secreta, who is a half-sister to 3 winners, including turf grade II winner Dubleo.

The last one with experience in the main body of the race is Paddy O'Prado (El Prado (IRE) - Fun House by Prized), who was 7th in his debut on a sloppy Churchill Downs track on July 4. He sold for $105,000 as a yearling, and is out of grade II turf winner Fun House. Fun House was a winner at 2, and earned $432,922 in her career. Fun House is the dam of winner Wild Chant, who was a winner at 2.

Calipari (Mr. Greeley - Concentric by Shadeed) sold for $175,000 as a 2-year old, and is a half-brother to 5 winners, including grade I winner Circle of Life. Circle of Life was a debut winner at 2, and won the Spinaway (gr. I) that year. By the way, the last time I mentioned Calipari (he was scratched from a race on July 24), I picked up a lot of traffic from University of Kentucky basketball fans. Let's see if that happens again.

Selling for $50,000 as a 2-year old was Citrus Kid (Lemon Drop Kid - Orange Ice by Ginistrelli). Citrus Kid is out of the winning mare Orange Ice. Orange Ice has produced 9 winners, including stakes winner Harry's Halo. Two of her offspring won on the turf, and 5 won at 2, including 2 debut winners at 2.

Vamos a Ver (Smart Strike - Spring Star by Deputy Minister) is part of an entry with Cutter. He is the first foal out of the placed mare Spring Star. Spring Star is a half-sister to 2 winners, including turf stakes winner Spring Season.

Chula, dam of Starlighter (Vindication - Chula by Broad Brush), was stakes-placed on the turf. She has produced the winner Chevin, who is a winner on the turf. Chula is a half-sister to 3 winners, including stakes winners Tee Cat and Snug Harbour.

Precipice Trail (Giant's Causeway - Manoa by Seeking the Gold) is a full-brother to grade I winner Carriage Trail, who was a stakes winner on the turf. Overall, Carriage Trail earned $746,628. Precipice Trail's dam, grade III stakes-placed Manoa, has also produced Forest Trail, grade III stakes-placed on the turf.

Completing the AE list (along with Novel Notion) are Ryvit (Tapit - Ryvnine by Broad Brush) and Grand Piano Man (Grand Slam - Musical Miss by Seattle Song). Ryvit, who is part of entry with Mill Pond, sold for $120,000 as a 2-year old. He is the first foal out of the unraced mare Ryvnine. Rynvine is a full-sister to grade I winner Concern and grade III winner Tennis Lady, and 4 other winners. Grand Piano Man sold for $80,000 at 2. He is out of the winning mare Musical Miss. Musical Miss has produced 6 winners, including stakes winners Gild Trip and Trion Georgia. Trion Georgia was also stakes-placed on the turf. Three of Musical Miss' offspring won on the turf, and one won at 2.

MTO entrant In Just We Trust (Forest Danger - Trust Fund by Conquistador Cielo), who is part of an entry with Calipari, ran on Monday, August 3, at Saratoga and finished a decent 4th. So, I would not expect him to go in this one. He is by first-crop sire Forest Danger, whose 12 runners have made 20 combined starts, registering 1 win, 2 seconds, 1 third, and $33,722. In Just We Trust sold for $190,000 as a weanling, and $275,000 as a yearling. He is out of the winning mare Trust Fund, who was a winner at 2. Trust Fund has produced 3 winners from 3 to run.

William Paley (colt; Afleet Alex - My Sweet Country by Bold Ruckus) and King Rock (colt; Rock Hard Ten - Queen Mindy by King of Kings (IRE)) debut in this one at Delaware Park. William Paley has been worked since early May, most recently going 5 furlongs in 1:03.06 on a muddy Belmont track on July 27. Prospective Union (Dixie Union - Golden Prospect by Mr. Prospector) and Navy Lieutenant (Harlan's Holiday - Tribal Run by Cherokee Run) met on July 14 at Delaware Park at 5 furlongs. Prospective Union was second and Navy Lieutenant was 5th. This is the same race in which Cutter, who runs at Saratoga on August 5, was third. Prospective Union previously finished 8th on June 11 at Churchill Downs. This is the now famous Maiden race won by undefeated Backtalk, winner of the Bashford Manor (gr. III) and the Sanford (gr. II). Six additional entrants from that race have since broken their maidens, including the Afleet Alex colt Dublin on August 1. Strangely enough, Prospective Union is out of a half-sister to Dublin, Golden Prospect. Golden Prospect is a half-sister to 5 other winners, including grade II stakes-placed Mike's Classic. Navy Lieutenant sold for $25,000 as a yearling and $100,000 as a 2-year old. He is a half-brother to the winner Runningonaprayer, who was a winner at 2. Tribal Run, dam of Navy Lieutenant, is a half-sister to 6 winners, including stakes-placed Clandestine.

All Mighty John is out of the winning mare All Nighter, who has produced 5 winners from 6 to run. Two of her offspring won at 2, including stakes winner All Night Labor. All Night Labor has earned $361,634 through 2009.

Selling for $70,000 as a weanling was Hundred Adams (Macho Uno - Pearlwood by Touch Gold), who is the second foal out of the unraced mare Pearlwood. Pearlwood is a half-sister to the winner Upton Park.

Jackalack (Indy King - Sugar Gray by Two Punch) is the first foal out of the winning mare Sugar Gray. Sugar Gray is a half-sister to one winner.

Yesterday's Island (Tomorrows Cat - Rememberance by Silver Hawk) is out of the winning mare Rememberance. Rememberance is a half-sister to 10 winners, including stakes winners Majestic Dream and Ardmayle.

On the AE list is Pulpit's Jewel (Pulpit - She's a Jewel by Succesful Appeal), who is part of an entry with King Rock. He is the first foal out of stakes winner She's a Jewel, who won 2 races at 2 and was also stakes-placed that year. Overall, She's a Jewel earned $207,585 in 12 starts.
