Deterrence Pulls Away from Keith's Kitten

Keith's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Silent Emotion by Ghazi) garnered plenty of attention at the windows, going off at less than even money. I guess the word is out about the Kitten's Joys on the turf. The entry of Cattacular (Milwaukee Brew - Enterprizing Cat by Storm Cat) and Nurse Donna (Vindication - Swingtime Music by Woodman) received a little attention, as did Dewberry Hill (Arch - Royal Dove (IRE) by Royal Academy). Exquisite Miss (Buddha - Exquisite Mistress by Nasty and Bold) was a little feisty in the paddock, while Keith's Kitten was being kept calm in her stall. Deterrence (Action This Day - Salt de Tere by Salt Lake) looked like a handful. She confirmed this during the load, not wanting to go in. Cattacular fussed a bit as well. Keith's Kitten was loaded first and had to wait a long time with all the antics. The starter sent them along as soon as the last horse entered the gate. No one seemed to want the lead, it went to Miss Iron Lady (Runaway Groom - Iron Miss by Fit to Fight). Lots of scrambling going on. Dewberry Hill, Nurse Donna, J J Gulch (Gulch - Mine Alone by Belong to Me), and Sahmba La Vista (Sahm - Raes Irish Queen by Minneapple) all took a turn. Keith's Kitten was in a good position, but she encountered some traffic problems and was shuffled back. Emerging from the pack was Deterrence, who pulled away for the win. Sparky's Dream (Giant's Causeway - Lady Carson by Carson City) closed well to take second and complete a Kenny McPeek trained exacta. Keith's Kitten was moved to the outside, but came too late to threaten the top three, finishing fourth.

Open the Champagne

Pure Class (Purge - Twining Star by Twining) was the early favorite, with Softly Singing (Holy Bull - Victory Roll by Deerhound) also taking money. But, when the gates opened, Champagne d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro - Champagne Glow by Saratoga Six), the filly who last ran in stakes company, was favored, and she looked the part. Our two, Go Ask Alex (Afleet Alex - Dominique's Joy by Strawberry Road (AUS)) and Saint Isabelle (Saint Liam - Fortyniner Fever by Forty Niner), were longshots. Saint Isabelle is a leggy thing, looked like she might need some distance. At the break, Pure Class was off slowly, while Stockings (Hennessy - Chitka by Jade Hunter) took the lead. However, Champagne d'Oro came up the inside to join Stockings. These two dueled for awhile, but Champagne d'Oro pulled away for the victory. The Medaglia d'Oro fillies just keep rolling along. First-time starter Softly Singing ran well late to pick up second, while Stockings held on for 3rd. On the scene late was Saint Isabelle, who just grabbed fourth. Go Ask Alex raced among horses and didn't show much, finishing 8th. Watch the Replay.

Wiggle and a Wink (filly; Congaree - Friendofthefamily by Wild Rush) got up late to win a Claiming race at Woodbine by a neck.

Cedros (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Wayward Bound by Mr. Prospector) circled the entire field and came up just a head short in his Maiden Special Weight on the Del Mar turf. A jump past the wire, he was in front. He was 25-1 in this one, I don't think we'll see those odds again. Watch the Replay.

Gold d'Oro (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Gold Canyon by Mr. Prospector) closed steadily, but came up a neck short in her Maiden Special Weight on the Saratoga turf. Watch the Replay.

Speight of Hand (colt; Speightstown - Hitch by Cox's Ridge) pressed the pacesetter, then weakened a bit to finish 3rd in his Allowance race at Saratoga. Senor Fuego (colt; Speightstown - Vasquez by Coronado's Quest) closed to take 4th. Watch the Replay.

Oriental Sunshine (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Kristi's Sunshine by Miswaki) was involved from the start in her Allowance race on the turf at Mountaineer, and battled to the wire, finishing 3rd. Watch the Replay.

Race 1 at Saratoga stayed on the turf, so MTO entrant Jaystone (gelding; Birdstone - Maya's Note by Editor's Note) was a scratch.

Christmas Parade (gelding; Congaree - Christmas Time by Gilded Time) was scratched from his Starter Allowance at Calder.

Afleet Maggi (Afleet Alex - Mindset by Coronado's Quest) makes her third start, and Zori's Eye (Rock Hard Ten - Congratulations by Mercedes Won) her 2nd in this 6th furlong contest at Saratoga. Both fillies most recently ran at 7 furlongs at Arlington Park on July 15, and both finished 2nd. Obviously, it was not in the same race. Afleet Maggi previously finished 4th at Churchill Downs on June 13. She's had one work since running at Arlington, going 4 furlongs in :51.09 at Saratoga. Afleet Maggi sold for $14,000 as a weanling, $125,000 as a yearling, and $220,000 as a 2-year old. She is a half-sister to 2 winners, both of which won at 2. Afleet Alex's 24 runners have made 47 total starts, recording 4 wins, 8 seconds, 4 thirds, and $156,546. Zori's Eye has worked twice since her debut, most recently going 4 furlongs in :49.32 on the Saratoga training track on August 2. She is out of the winning mare Congratulations. Congratulations has produced 4 winners, including grade I stakes-placed My Snookie's Boy. Rock Hard Ten has had 9 starters, which have made 14 total starts, recording 3 wins, 2 seconds, and $133,719. Rock Hard Ten's offspring include group III winner Long Lashes.

Proud Zoe (Proud Accolade - Sophia Sez So by Wild Event) finished 2nd on June 13 at Churchill Downs, in front of Afleet Maggi. The winner of that race was Hot Dixie Chick, who won the Schuylerville (gr. III) in her next start. Proud Zoe also finished 3rd, behind Hot Dixie Chick (who was 2nd) on May 14 at Churchill Downs. Proud Zoe's debut came on April 17 at Keeneland, where she was 3rd. Proud Zoe, who sold for $50,000 as a yearling, is a half-sister to the winner Luca G. She is by first-crop sire Proud Accolade, who has had 18 runners, which have made 36 total starts, registering 6 wins, 12 seconds, 4 thirds, and $227,563.

The only other filly with experience is Marabelle (Dixie Union - Miss Hot Salsa by Houston), who finished 2nd in her one and only start, a 5 furlong contest at Monmouth on July 17. She sold for $40,000 as a yearling, and is out of stakes winner Miss Hot Salsa. Miss Hot Salsa is the dam of 2 winners, including stakes-placed Four Song Limit.

Regularly readers will recognize C. C. Coco (Tiznow - Itsmylife by Storm Cat), as the filly who dumped her rider and took off before her race at Saratoga on August 3, resulting in her being scratched. At the time, I was impressed with her athleticism. Let's see if she can show that in a race. C. C. Coco is a half-sister to the winner Kat Goddess, who was a winner at 2. Her dam, Itsmylife, is a half-sister to grade II winner La Rosa.

Protesting (A. P. Indy - On Parade by Storm Cat) is a daughter of grade III stakes-placed On Parade, who was a debut winner at 2, and who finished third in the Valley Stream Stakes (gr. III) that year. On Parade is a daughter of grade I winner My Flag, who is a daughter of undefeated champion Personal Ensign. On Parade is the dam of 2 winners, including grade II winner Parading. Parading has earned $419,046 through 2009, including victories this year in the Dixie Stakes (gr. II) and the Ben Ali Stakes (gr. III).

Top-seller in the race is Happy Week (Distorted Humor - Lassie's Legacy by Deputy Minister), who sold for $600,000 as a yearling. She is out of the winning mare Lassie's Legacy. Lassie's Legacy has produced grade III stakes-placed Aspiring, who was a winner at 2. Lassie's Legacy is a half-sister to grade I winners Summer Squall and A. P. Indy, as well as grade III Welcome Surprise.

Selling for $90,000 as a yearling was Quiet Temper (Quiet American - Dead Aim by Silver Deputy), who is the second foal out of the unraced mare Dead Aim. Dead Aim is a half-sister to 2 winners. This is the family of grade I winners Dancing Spree, Fantastic Find, and Furlough.

Gold Birdie (Touch Gold - Bird Harbor by Boston Harbor) is the first foal out of the winning mare Bird Harbor, who was a debut winner at 2. Bird Harbor is a half-sister to 2 winners. This is the family of grade I winners Bird Town and Birdstone.

3-year old entry August 10

Post time is 4:56 PM ET. for the mile and 70 yard contest. Quick in Motion was 7th in the Northbound Pride Stakes last time out on July 4 at Canterbury Park.
