News and Notes

Liston (colt; Storm Cat - Rings a Chime by Metfield), the big buzz horse in the 2nd at Saratoga on August 15 was victorious, but didn't quite look like the second coming of greatness. Third in this race was Brother Bird (colt; Yonaguska - Mining My Own by Mining), half-brother to Mine That Bird. Watch the Replay.

In addition to the entries below, unraced Viking Fleet (colt; Afleet Alex - Ellieonthemarch by Old Trieste) is entered in the 7th at Woodbine, post time 4:05 PM ET. But, he's the third horse on the AE list in a race scheduled for 7 furlongs on the Polytrack, so he will probably will not get in.

Curly worked again at Arlington on August 15, going 5 furlongs in 1:01.00.

2-year old Stakes Results

Kratisto (colt; Afleet Alex - Torch by Risen Star) was at the back of the pack early in the Charles Town Juvenile Stakes, but made up a lot of ground once he got moving. He was no match for runaway winner Western Smoke, but he passed everyone else to finish second. He was 7 lengths in front of the third place horse. Kratisto has now earned $43,150 in his three starts. Watch the Replay.

Miss Afleet Alex (filly; Afleet Alex - Go Again Valid by Valid Appeal) also came from far back to pass everbody but the winner Rich Pearl in the Donnie Wilhite Memorial Handicap on the turf at Louisiana Downs, but the finish was a little closer. Miss Afleet Alex just missed running down the pacesetter while running in the center of the track. So, Miss Afleet Alex is now a stakes-placed maiden. Watch the Replay.

Jack Cat Jumps Over Tactition and Daddy Forty Nine

Jumpin Jack Cat (Newfoundland - Adoraday by Dayjur) was favored, with Afriendforlucy (Southern Image - Sensational Eyes by Roman Majesty) and Your in for Half (Snuck In - Dead Ender by Ends Well) also receiving attention from the bettors. Commander Akbar (Deputy Commander - Crimson Girl by Rubiano), Daddy Forty Nine (Ghostzapper - Tuff Chick by Wild Again), and Your in for Half were first-time geldings. Tactition (Afleet Alex - Natural Carma by Valiant Nature) looked good in the paddock, the best I've seen him look, but Jumpin Jack Cat looked good as well. Lots of trouble at the start, for once it did not involve Tactition. It's Magic  (David Copperfield - Noble Wish by Magloire) took a right turn, Afriendforlucy stumbled, and Commander Akbar broke outward. Also, Daddy Forty Nine was off slowly. Jumpin Jack Cat took control early. Your in for Half chased for awhile, but then tired. Tactition rallied up the rail to get second, while Daddy Forty Nine ran well late to pick up the show spot. They didn't threaten Jumpin Jack Cat, who won by better than 6, but they did produce good efforts. Watch the Replay.

Western Woods is Smilin and Dancin

Breezy Boy (Louis Quatorze - Breezy Bray by Yarrow Brae), who lost his rider last time out, was favored. Trick Credit (Concorde's Tune - Credit Card Caller by Phone Trick) was scratched. Western Woods (Came Home - Hickory Heifer by Forestry) looked hot as they went into the gate. The Fenian Warrior (Invisible Ink - Sheila's Outback by Formal Dinner) was acting up. Tymax (Gold Token - Mydistinctive Star by Distinctive) was left at the break, while Western Woods went right to the lead. Smilin and Dancin (Kitten's Joy - De Ice by Dehere) was near the back and stayed there, finishing 8th. Up front, Breezy Boy and Duncan McFly (Weekend Cruise - Mrs. Saigon by Mr. Greeley) were chasing Western Woods, who built up a 4 length lead. Wild Man Walkin (Lion Hearted - Wildalot by Wild Again) came on late to reduce the margin, but Western Woods was cruising. Watch the Replay.

Omara Devils past Fleet Special

Stormin Shawnee (Cherokee Run - Rolling Creek by Storm Creek) was favored, and looked serious before the race. Fleet Special (Afleet Alex - Dance Alexa by Southern Halo) also made a positive pre-race impression. Stormin Shawnee went right to the lead at the start, pressed by Omara Devil (Limehouse - Omaretta by Devil's Bag). Fleet Special secured a nice spot on the rail. Also in the early mix was Super Thunder (Point Given - Ms. Major Minnette by Major Impact). And just off these was Rutledge's Love (Not For Love - Rutledge Flirt by King of Kings (IRE)). Omara Devil made a move on the turn, pulling even with Stormin Shawnee, and then drawing off to win by 4. Stormin Shawnee weakened to fourth, while Rutledge's Love and Super Thunder moved into second and third. Fleet Special ened up 5th, not a bad debut. Omara Devil is the 7th winner for Limehouse. Marcello Rocks by a Nose

Marcello (Johannesburg - Miramar Miracle by Affirmed) attracted most of the attention at the windows, going off at 2-5. The next lowest odds were 9-1. A number of them were acting up before the race, including Our Crazy Monkey (Wheelaway - Carson Countess by Lord Carson) and Poker Trick (Werblin - Creative Trickster by Clever Trick). We Will Rock (Rock Hard Ten - Di's Delight by French Deputy) looked like he was ready to explode. On looks, I thought Pulsion (Include - Spring by Stravinsky) was best. He broke through the gate before the start, but was quickly caught and reloaded. Our Crazy Monkey went to the lead, but he was soon joined and then passed by Marcello. We Will Rock was wide for much of the race, made a menacing move, but flattened out and finished 5th. Making a more sustained bid was Pulsion, who kept coming and coming and coming. At the wire, it was too close to call, but the camera gave the victory to Marcello by a nose. Hmmm... is that the way a 2-5 shot is supposed to win? Watch the Replay.

William's Kitten (colt; Kitten's Joy - Blush by Menifee) had some traffic trouble in his Allowance race on the River Downs turf, and lacked some punch once free, finishing 3rd. It will be interesting to see if they go on to the Cradle Stakes after this one.

3-year old Stakes Results August 15

The La Jolla Handicap (gr. II) was a little disappointing, as we had three horses in the race and none of them hit the board. Favorite I'll Show Them (gelding; Smarty Jones - Top Rung by Seattle Slew) was slow to get started, but then got involved in the quick pace. He weakened some late to finish 4th. Plasma Beam (colt; Smarty Jones - Angel Amy by Theatrical (IRE)) stalked the early pace, but tired to 7th. Arcodoro (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Northern Gulch by Gulch) never looked comfortable, pulling on the outside. He is not a happy camper when he doesn't get the early lead. He retreated to last. Watch the Replay. Read more about the La Jolla Handicap here.

Missunitednations (filly; Peace Rules - Sister Greeley by Mr. Greeley) ran another decent race in the Monmouth Oaks (gr. III), finishing 4th. Renda (filly; Medaglia d'Oro - Ten Carats by Capote) was never really involved, finishing 8th. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Monmouth Oaks here.

Cinderella's Wish (filly; Speightstown - Godmother by Show'em Slew) was wide throughout in the Charles Town Oaks, finishing 8th (last). One wonders if she didn't care for the tight turns. Watch the Replay Read more about the Charles Town Oaks here.

I think Brother Bird might have the same running style as his 1/2 brother Mine That Bird.  To me, his acceleration when he made his move at the quarter pole was impressive for a 2 year old.  If he had waited to make his run, he could have pulled off a 2nd place finish and maybe even a 1st, though Liston ran a great race and was on a roll the whole time.
