Graduation Day for A Student

Favoritism wavered between R El Jefe (Benchmark - Mirabilia by Never Tabled) and A Student (Afleet Alex - La Sorbonne (ARG) by Southern Halo). A couple of them looked pretty wet in the warm-up including Magical Storm (Storm and a Half - Magicalparisbreeze by Well Decorated) and Ran the Man (Storm and a Half - Polly's Rumor by Spread the Rumor), who was not happy. A Student was calm and collected. Ran the Man was relunctant to load. At the break a familiar story, A Student spotted the field several lengths. I thought that was it for him. Paragrin (Champali - Pushtoon by Pioneering) took the lead. He was pressured by Stormin Celebrity (Storm and a Half - Saratoga Celebrity by Saratoga Six). A Student began to make up some ground, but he was still way out of it. The filly, St. Mawes (Storm and a Half - Impetuous Molly by Idabel), put in a big run and moved past the leader. Suddenly, A Student appeared on the scene. He powered past them all to get the victory. R El Jefe came along for second. A Student is the 5th winner for Afleet Alex, and his second debut winner.

Bank Merges Afleet Again

Afleet Again (Afleet Alex - Lucky Again by Wild Again) was favored, bet down from his morning line odds of 10-1. Killoquah (Mineshaft - Bird Cage by Kris S.) looked good in the paddock, but a little unsettled in the warm-up. Scavezzato (Wheelaway - Teedleewinks by Badger Land) seemed unsure about the riders up command. Afleet Again looked ready. He was a little relunctant to load, which gave Bank Merger (Consolidator - Lucrative by Seeking the Gold) ideas as well. At the break, Afleet Again was near the back. Up front, Lil Snitch (Bernstein - Sparkler by Carson City) and Mister Dish (City Place - Atticus's Woman by Atticus) were dueling, setting fairly fast fractions. They both paid the price for the speed tiring to finish back in the field. Wild in Shoes (Wildcat Heir - Rhythm in Shoes by Rhythm) and Putmeupfront (Put It Back - Stormin' Haze by Stormin Fever) both put in runs, but Bank Merger was moving best of all, and he drew away on the outside. Afleet Again also made up a lot of ground, but he had too much to do, and settled for 4th. Bank Merger is the 9th winner for Consolidator. Watch the Replay.

A Winning Mission for Seattle over Steve's Kitten

The only scratches were the MTOs, as everyone else went in this turf contest. Steve's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Cat's Prize by Golden Missile) was favored. He looked a little fidgety in the paddock. Epicurus (More Than Ready - Kinlin by Unbridled) made a positive impression, as did Seattle Mission (Strategic Mission - Seattle Moon by Seattle Dancer). Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor - Golden Ballet by Moscow Ballet) was a handful, rearing as they moved out to the track, and bucking a bit during the load. Steve's Kitten went to the lead at the break. He was pressed by Seattle Mission, but the fractions were comfortable (:24.18, :49.11, 1:13.74). Even so, Steve's Kitten gave way in the stretch, tiring to finish 8th. Seattle Mission inherited the lead, and looked as though he would get caught by someone, namely One Sky (Orientate - Southern Letters by Capote), Drosselmeyer, or Chairman Now (Tiznow - Lady From Shanghai by Storm Cat), but the New York-bred held them all off for the win. Seattle Mission is owned by Sackatoga Stable, famous as the owners of Funny Cide. Watch the Replay.

It Tiz Seriously

Seriously (Gulch - Mutton Maniac by Wolf Power (SAF)), another Baffert runner, was favored, but not as heavily as Marcello yesterday. It Tiz (Tiznow - Star of the Woods by Woodman) acted up as they went to the track, and Star of Sapphire (Tapit - Rhumb Line by Mr. Greeley) was unsettled. Vivacious Anna (Afleet Alex - Petite Chatte by Storm Cat) was looking anxious, I was hoping the jockey would take her away from the pony. She did settle down a little before the load, although she was reluctant going in. However, the race was pretty much over for her at the break, as she stumbled badly. Imperatriz (Chapel Royal - Devils River by Devil His Due) went to the lead, closely followed by Linda Surprise (Yes It's True - Squall Linda by Summer Squall). Those two dueled into the stretch. Watching this action were favorite Seriously and It Tiz. They both moved, but It Tiz got the jump and the victory. Vivacious Anna did pass early pacesetter Linda Surprise to finish 6th. Bunky (Afleet Alex - Madam Lagonza by Kingmambo), who debuts at 7 furlongs, has been working at Saratoga for some time, including a 6 furlong work on August 9 in a time of 1:15.12. I always like to see 6 furlong works, especially for 2-year olds. Bunky was purchased for $260,000 as a yearling, and is a half-brother to two winners, including grade III winner Woodlander. Woodlander earned $330,374 in a 25 race career. Another sibling, Miss Ocean City, was a debut winner at 2. Afleet Alex has had 29 starters which have run 57 total times, recording 5 wins, 11 seconds, 6 thirds, and $207,210.

Successful Score (Successful Appeal - Big Score by Grand Slam) has run twice and finished second twice. His debut was at 5.5 furlongs at Churchill Downs on June 20, and he then ran 6 furlongs at Belmont on July 19. Successful Score was purchased for $180,000 as a 2-year old, and is out of stakes winners Big Score. Big Score won 3 out of 4 as a 2-year old, including the Kindergarten Stakes. Big Score has produced the winner Mighty Score.

Exhi (Maria's Mon - Soldera by Polish Numbers) finished 2nd in his only start, running 7 furlongs at Belmont on July 24. Stakes winner Soldera, dam of Exhi, was a winner at 2. She has produced the winner Perfectionism, a Pleasantly Perfect 3-year old colt.

Indian Council (Indian Charlie - Noble Cause by Diesis (GB)) and Antenna (Tale of the Cat - Miss Moonwaki by Miswaki) were third in their only starts. Indian Council ran at Churchill Downs June 20, finishing behind Successful Score. He sold for $150,000 as a yearling, and is out of grade III stakes-placed Noble Cause. Noble Cause has produced 4 winners, one of which won at 2. Antenna's race was at 5.5 furlongs at Saratoga on July 29. Stakes-placed Miss Moonwaki, dam of Antenna, has produced 6 winners from 7 to run. One of her offspring was a winner at 2. Miss Moonwaki is also a half-sister to my favorite horse, Mr. Freeze.

The remaining three are unraced.

Tuvia's Force (Mineshaft - Jazz Tradition by Dixieland Band) brought $32,000 as a yearling, and is out of the winning mare Jazz Tradition. Jazz Tradition has produced the winner Chaldee Funky, a winner at 2. Jazz Tradition is also a half-sister to 2 winners, including grade III stakes-placed Charmed Gift.

Highveldt Storm (Johannesburg - Hayley's Dancer by Mr. Greeley) who sold for $260,000 as a yearling, is a half-sister to 2 winners, including stakes-placed Alexsayso.

Champion Ajina, dam of Ready for Change (A. P. Indy - Ajina by Strawberry Road (AUS)), earned $1,327,915 in her career. As a 2-year old, she won three races, including the Tempted (gr. III) and the Demoiselle (gr. II). Ajina has produced 2 winners, including stakes winner Manchurian, and stakes-placed Jinni. Jinni was a debut winner at 2, and is a full-sister to Ready for Change.

your updates are great, it's so nice to hear what our former little boys are creating.  Afleet Alex is most impressive.  I always liked him and am delighted to see how well he's doing at stud.
