A Dead Heat Dash for Golden Ghost

I will be out of town for the next few days, so the next update will not come until Friday, August 28. I will try to check comments periodically, so please continue to post about the Maiden Watch horses or any other maidens of interest.

A Dead Heat for Golden Ghost in the First State Dash

Toboggan Slide went to the front, but Golden Ghost (Ghostzapper - Mandy's Gold by Gilded Time) was in a good spot. He rushed up to join the leader, and they dueled to the finish. Golden Ghost took a slight lead, but Toboggan Slide fought back. It was a long way back to the rest of the field. At the wire, the heads were bobbing. I thought that Toboggan Slide might have gotten the better bob, but they looked at the photo a long, long time. Finally, the announcement came, a dead heat, and Ghostzapper not only had his first winner, but his first stakes winner in the same instance. Selfishly, I was very glad to see Ghostzapper get his first winner, as I was certain that it would come while I was out of town. Watch the Replay. Listen for the announcer calling the wrong horse's name, as Golden Ghost makes his move. Read more about Golden Ghost's victory here.

Winslow Homer gets a Stately Victor(y)

Lots of changes in this one, originally scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the turf. It was taken off the turf, and run at 7 furlongs on the dirt. Scratched were Becky's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Caterette by Cozzene) (who runs tomorrow at Saratoga), El Commodore (El Prado (IRE)) - Fancy Clancy by Rahy), I've Got the Fever (Stephen Got Even - Music Fever by Gold Fever), Mint Maker (Unbridled's Song - Shawklit Mint by Air Forbes Won), Modern Cowboy (Tiznow - Western Woman by West by West), Saint Eligius (Saint Liam - Great Connection by Dayjur) (who ran at Monmouth), Tee Em Arr (Powerscourt (GB) - Heavenly Hindu by Smoke Glacken), Ulterior Motive (Distorted Humor - Indy Jazz by A. P. Indy), and Vamos a Ver (Smart Strike - Spring Star by Deputy Minister). Winslow Homer (Unbridled's Song - Summer Raven by Summer Squall), who drew into the race off of the MTO list, was favored. Stately Victor (Ghostzapper - Collect the Cash by Dynaformer) made a good impression in the paddock and during the warmup. Asphalt (War Chant - Island Fire by Island Whirl) protested at the load. On Vacation (Harlan's Holiday - Royal Trips by Summer Squall) broke on top, but Winslow Homer was not far off. Stately Victor got off to a slow beginning, but started moving almost immediately. On Vacation and Winslow Homer dueled into the stretch, where Winslow Home took command. Stately Victor closed steadily, but there was too much ground to make up and he finished 2nd. He definitely should benefit from some more distance. Watch the Replay.

City Trooper Stops Shrimp Dancer

The track was muddy, but there were no scratches. Fenway Faithful (Grand Slam - Lemon Tart by Deputy Minister) was favored, Shrimp Dancer (Kitten's Joy - Formal Dancer by Formal Gold) went off at a cool 27-1. City Trooper (City Zip - Such Grace by Polish Numbers) made a good impression in the paddock, as did Cats Kitty (Tomorrows Cat - Moneymakinmamma by In Excess (IRE)). Shrimp Dancer looked calm. City Trooper balked at the gate. He broke away from the assistant starter, but didn't get far. At the break, Fenway Faithful went right to the front. Never Give Up (Sunday Break (JPN) - Augustness by Capote) went with him for a time, but he didn't last long. City Trooper had more staying power, as he moved even with Fenway Faithful, and then went on by for the win. Shrimp Dancer was squeezed at the start, raced wide throughout, but never stopped trying, finishing 5th. Watch the Replay.

No Shenanigans Here

The track was sloppy at Monmouth, and Consort (Yes It's True - Romantic Summer by On to Glory) was a scratch. No Shenanigans (Value Plus - Western Resolve by West by West) was heavily favored, and looked the part. Nicetoseey'again (Saint Liam - O K to Dance by With Approval) was bouncing on the track, maybe showing a little too much energy. He was wet by loading time. Saint Eligius (Saint Liam - Great Connection by Dayjur) made a good appearance. No Shenanigans went to the lead, but he had company from Saint Eligius. They stayed like this into the stretch, when Saint Eligius weakened and No Shenanigans bounded away. Cactus Charlie (Not For Love - Holiday Ball by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) reduced the margin late, but No Shenanigans was home free. Nicetoseey'again made up some ground late, just missing 4th. Saint Eligius finished 6th. No Shenanigans is the 7th winner for Value Plus. Watch the Replay.

Discreetly Mine takes a Quick Ride

Discreetly Mine (Mineshaft - Pretty Discreet by Private Account) was the big favorite in this one. Double O Uno (Macho Uno - Flirtacious Girl by Excavate) looked good in the paddock. Discreetly Mine went right to the lead, although he was off the rail. Gathering Cloud (Tapit - Aly's Crown by Chief's Crown) tried to go with him, but he soon dropped back. A more persistant chaser was Super Saver (Maria's Mon - Supercharger by A. P. Indy). Quick Ride (Afleet Alex - Baby Lets Cruise by Tale of the Cat) made a move to get into contention, but he weakened and finished 5th. No one was catching Discreetly Mine anyway, as he drew off to win by more than 6. I actually thought that Discreetly Mine looked better after the race than before or during. Watch the Replay.
