News and Notes

Two Joys (filly; Kitten's Joy - Emily's Joy by Mr. Greeley) was scratched from her Claiming race at Ellis Park.

A Stately Victory

Hybrid (Dixie Union - Pertuisane (GB) by Zamindar) was scratched, along with the AEs Billions Boy (Johannesburg - Royal Wonder by Kingmambo), Chairman Now (Tiznow - Lady From Shanghai by Storm Cat), Crystal Moment (Distorted Humor - Crystal Music by Nureyev), Grand Piano Man (Grand Slam - Musical Miss by Seattle Song), Mint Maker (Unbridled's Song - Shawklit Mint by Air Forbes Won), and Trippo (Trippi - Reely Risky by Reel On Reel). Favoritism bounced between King Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Santo Mio by Southern Halo) and Stately Victor (Ghostzapper - Collect the Cash by Dynaformer), settling on Stately Victor at post time. Stately Victor looked good in the post parade, and Bwana Brave (Bwana Charlie - Fire Feet by Lacotte (IRE)) warmed up with good energy. Dixie Summer's (Grand Reward - Vopo by Theatrical (IRE)) was acting up a bit, and was squeezed at the start. Cypress Point (Holy Bull - Reason to Ransom by Red Ransom) took the early lead, with King Kitten and Stately Victor both taking close-up positions. Mesa Vista (Sky Mesa - Gata Secreta by Spinning World) made the first move, but then King King eased out to go up to toward the lead. Suddenly, Stately Victor got through on the inside, pulling away to win by better than 4. Extraextraordinary (Giant's Causeway - Scoop by Gone West) and Bwana Brave both closed, to finish a nose apart in second and third. King Kitten weakened to 4th. Stately Victor is the second winner for Ghostzapper, and looks like a colt with a nice future. Watch the Replay.

Dixie Band Marches Over Kratisto

Dixie Band (Dixie Union - Tutorial by Forty Niner) was the big favorite, with Piscitelli (Victory Gallop - Rayelle by Relaunch) virtually the only other horse taking money. Kratisto (Afleet Alex - Torch by Risen Star) was the longest shot on the board, going off at 26-1. Even so, he looked ready. U Appeal to Me (Successful Appeal - Miss Adorable by Mr. Prospector) was showing a lot of energy, I thought that he might be the pacesetter. Oak Motte (Valid Expectations - Raven's Bride by Cherokee Colony) showed some stubborness at the load. Beware the Tiger (Hold That Tiger - Brian's Beauty by With Approval) went to the front, pressed by U Appeal to Me. Dixie Band was just off these. Kratisto was at the back, but not unexpectedly. Positions stayed pretty much the same until the stretch, when Dixie Band made his move, easily overtaking U Appeal to Me, while Beware the Tiger tired. Piscitelli came running, and just missed second by a nose. Kratisto never really got in gear, passing one late. Not sure if it was the slow pace, the Polytrack (vs. dirt), or just not good enough. Watch the Replay.

Callide Valley Pulls away from the Westshore

El Primero (El Corredor - Ashlee's Lady by Gilded Time) was scratched. In Just We Trust (Forest Danger - Trust Fund by Conquistador Cielo) was favored. Another one getting attention at the windows was $1.5 million yearling Keeneland Breeze (A. P. Indy - Taegu by Halo), who did not look happy at the saddling. Devonshire (Royal Academy - Ice Cream Cone by Seeking the Gold) was taking some money too, but he looked like he needed more distance to me, long legs. Westshore (Saint Liam - Alexi Dancer by A. P. Indy) went off at 18-1, which was actually down from his morning line price. Longshot Northern Giant (Giant's Causeway - Jessi Take Charge by War Chant) looked good to me, but if I remember right I thought he looked good last time out too, and he finished 9th. Ice Box (Pulpit - Spice Island by Tabasco Cat) was on his toes. At the break, it was Captain Stone (Sky Mesa - Thunder Warmth by Thunder Gulch) going to the lead from his rail spot, but Westshore was up there pressing. Favorite In Just We Trust was rank in third. Also up close was Callide Valley (Indian Charlie - Cheri Chardoneigh by Hennessy). Callide Valley moved up to challenge Captain Stone, and those two dueled to the wire. At the finish, it was Callide Valley by a neck. But, wait, Shaun Bridgmohan, rider of Captain Stone, claimed foul. There was definitely some bumping, but the claim was not allowed. Westshore just lost third to In Just We Trust. Still a very nice debut. Unfortunately, I would not expect 18-1 next time out. By the way, Keeneland Breeze was left at the start, and finished 9th. A Mad Dash Over Saint Amore

Byline (Eddington - Cable News by Known Fact) was scratched. Saint Amore (Saint Liam - Amaretta by Woodman) and her entrymate Romantic Hideaway (City Zip - My Canada by With Approval) took the early money, but Julie From Dixie (Dixie Union - Judy's Magic by Wavering Monarch) was favored when they broke from the gate. She was not happy with the pony in the post parade. Benedicta (Orientate - Endless Dream by Tale of the Cat) kept catching my eye. The load took a very long time. The break was fairly even, but Saint Amore was off a little slowly. Gold Infusion (Limehouse - Malika's Gold by Gold Case) took the early lead. She was briefly pressed by Tasha Rules (Roman Ruler - Tappin' Tasha by Dixieland Band), but that one soon dropped back. Mad Dasher (Purge - Mad Donna by Saint Ballado) was more persistant, and hit the front in the stretch. She held off the determined drive of Romantic Hideaway (City Zip - My Canada by With Approval) to get the win. Saint Amore had begun moving soon after the start, and took third over the tiring pacesetter Gold Infusion. Mad Dasher is the 6th winner for Purge. Watch the Replay.

Gun Rocks Saratoga

City Wolf (Giant's Causeway - Baby Zip by Relaunch), the half-brother to Ghostzapper and City Zip, was scratched, along with Citrus Kid (Lemon Drop Kid - Orange Ice by Ginistrelli). Hockley (A. P. Indy - Penny's Fortune by Storm Cat) was attracting the bettors' attention, going off at less than even money. Among our three, Alex Le Great (Afleet Alex - Colonial Glitter by Glitterman) was favored at 6-1, and he looked good on the way to the post parade. Krypton (colt; Rock Hard Ten - Freedom Reigns by Unbridled's Song) was 11-1, and Magic Bullet (Afleet Alex - Magical Mood (GB) by Forestry) was dismissed at 46-1. He's a nice looking horse, but I thought he might need a race. In the post parade, London Town (Eddington - City Band by Carson City) was fidgety, Hero's Empire (Empire Maker - Marozia by Storm Bird) was acting up, and Gun Rock (Forest Danger - Brilliant Blaze by Seeking the Gold) warmed up well. Alex Le Great was a little unsettled in the gate, and was backed out and reloaded (you'll see this on the replay). Krypton went to the front from his inside position, but Gun Rock wasn't far behind. Also in the front mix were Rule (Roman Ruler - Rockcide by Personal Flag), Hockley, and Alex Le Great. The fractions were fairly ambitious (:22.58, :45.62, 1:10.47), and Krypton gave way in the stretch. He ended up finishing 7th. Gun Rock took the lead at that point, and he was able to hold off Rule, who was gaining at the end. Favorite Hockley had to settle for 3rd. Alex Le Rock finished a decent 4th, while Magic Bullet didn't run much, finishing 8th. Gun Rock is the 4th winner for Forest Danger. Watch the Replay.

Take a Hard Look at Pulsion

The only scratch was the AE entrant Summers at Delmar (Out of Place - British Bauble by Kris S.). Pulsion (Include - Spring by Stravinsky), who was just a nose short last start, was a huge favorite, even money at post time. The only other horse taking money was Take a Hard Look (Rock Hard Ten - Arjunand by Diesis (GB)) at 3-1. He is a nice looking boy. A number of these looked good in the prelims, including favorite Pulsion, Lucks Mine (Mineshaft - Lucky Soph by Cozzene), and Came Aboard (Came Home - Captain's Launch by Northern Flagship). Lucks Mine held the early advantage, but he was soon joined by Mr. Saturdaynight (Grand Reward - Here Comes Chelsie by Dehere). Take a Hard Look had a good rail spot behind these, but was pulling some early. Lucks Mine and Mr. Saturdaynight dueled into the stretch. Mr. Saturdaynight took the lead, but he was unable to hold off the professional closing kick of Pulsion. That one rolled on by for the victory. Also coming on late were Came Aboard and Erbeia (Pulpit - Corrazona by El Gran Senor), who came from way out of it. Take a Hard Look ended up 8th, but should be stronger next time out.
