News and Notes

In addition to the entries outlined below, Two Joys (filly; Kitten's Joy - Emily's Joy by Mr. Greeley) runs in race 6 at Ellis Park, a 6 furlong Claiming race, post time 3:38 PM ET. Two Joys has run twice. She broke her maiden first time out, on July 12 at Presque Isle Downs, and then returned to run third in a 6 furlong Claming race at Laurel on August 15.

It's all Interactif in the With Anticipation

Strike the Tiger (Tiger Ridge - R Lucky Strike by In Excess (IRE)) was scratched. Hopefully, this means that he will go instead in the Cradle at River Downs on Monday, so that I can see him in person. Also out were the AE entrant Quick Money (City Zip - What a Price by Repriced) and the MTOs Aikenite (Yes It's True - Silverlado by Saint Ballado) and Turf Melody (Maria's Mon - Tricky Bird by Storm Bird). Aikenite is entered in the Hopeful (gr. I) at Saratoga on Monday. Jung Man Scott (Freud - Plinking by Talkin Man) and Paddy O'Prado (El Prado (IRE) - Fun House by Prized) drew most of the attention of the bettors, with Jung Man Scott going off as the favorite. Jung Man Scott was full of energy, pretty rambunctious in the paddock. Dean's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Summer Theatre by Ide) looked ready, bouncing on his toes. I didn't get a good look at Zapster (Ghostzapper - Extend by Unbridled's Song). He was a little reluctant to load, but a shove helped. Mississippi Hippie (Dance Master - Debt Free by Fly So Free) took the early lead, with Red Rally (Reformer Rally - Premium Red by Thirty Six Red) pressing. Zapster was in a good position, just off the pace on the rail, but he was a little rank. Dean's Kitten was back in the pack. Interactif made a big move on the turf to pull away from everybody, taking the race by better than 4. Jung Man Scott and Paddy O'Prado both put in good late moves, but had to settle for 2nd and 3rd. Dean's Kitten made a nice move too, but flattened out a bit and finished 4th. Zapster tired a little to finish 5th. Watch the Replay.

Just Heavenly Has Manners

Former Flame (Dance to Destiny - Kiss'n Dyna by Dynaformer) and MTO Dazzling Countess (Roman Ruler - Dazzling Contrast by General Meeting) were scratched. Milford Bay (Cherokee Run - Get It Straight by Black Minnaloushe) was favored, and looked the part. Manners (Rock Hard Ten - Turkana by Deputy Minister) was getting no respect at the windows, 37-1. Supertunia (War Chant - Heliotrope by Northern Score) looked good in the paddock and Renaissance Girl (Bernstein - Artiste by Norquestor) made a good impression on the track. Manners was calm. Renaissance Girl and Honey Crisp (Pulpit - Ginger Gold by Golden Gear) dueled early, with Just Heavenly (North Light (IRE) - Diablo's Closer by Diablo) just off of these. Also in a good position was Manners. In the stretch, Just Heavenly made her move to hit the front. Favorite Milford Bay was coming, but Just Heavenly held her off, to win by a nose. Manners got all the way up to 3rd, but weakened a little late to finish 6th. Just Heavenly is the 3rd winner for freshman sire North Light. Watch the Replay.

Kratisto (Afleet Alex - Torch by Risen Star), who was 2nd in the 7 furlong Charles Town Juvenile Stakes last time out on August 15, returns to try graded stakes in the Arlington-Washington Futurity. Kratisto made up a ton of ground in the Charles Town Juvenile Stakes, but just ran out of real estate. The increase in distance should only help him. Kratisto's maiden win came in his second start on July 28 at Delaware Park, when he also closed well late. Since the Charles Town Juvenile Stakes, he's worked once at Delaware Park, going 5 furlongs in 1:03.20. Kratisto sold for $130,000 as a yearling, and is out of stakes winner Torch. Torch was a winner at 2, and earned $485,016 in a 71 race career. Torch has produced 4 winners, including stakes winner Morine's Victory.

Dixie Band (Dixie Union - Tutorial by Forty Niner) and U Appeal to Me (Successful Appeal - Miss Adorable by Mr. Prospector) met in the 7 furlong Spectacular Bid Stakes at Arlington Park on August 8. Dixie Band was the winner, and U Appeal to Me was 2nd. Dixie Band was also a winner in his only other start, a 4.5 furlong Maiden race at Arlington Park on June 21. Dixie Band sold for $60,000 as a 2-year old. He is out of stakes winner Tutorial. Tutorial earned $198,217 in her 19 race career. Tutorial is a half-sister to stakes winner Oxford Scholar and grade II winner Seeking Regina. U Appeal to Me was also a winner in his debut, going 4.5 furlongs on May 28 at Arlington Park. Since then, he's faced nothing but stakes company. In addition to his placing in the Spectacular Bid, he was 6th in the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine on June 14, and 4th in the Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes at Prairie Meadows on July 18. U Appeal to Me is a half-brother to one winner, and his dam, Miss Adorable, is a half-sister to 2 winners.

Herecomesbert (Purge - Star Quality (ARG) by Southern Halo) broke his maiden in his second start, running a mile at Arlington Park on August 6. Previously, he had finished 4th at Churchill Downs on July 4. Herecomesbert sold for $50,000 as a yearling. Star Quality, dam of Herecomesbert, was a winner at 2, and a group II winner in Argentina. Star Quality has produced 3 winners.

Piscitelli (Victory Gallop - Rayelle by Relaunch) also broke his maiden at a mile, but at Monmouth Park on July 30. In his only other start, he was 2nd in a 5 furlong race at Monmouth on July 5. He sold for $60,000 as a 2-year old, and is out of stakes winner Rayelle. Rayelle won 3 out of 4 races at 2, including the Hidden Light Stakes. Rayelle has produced 4 winners, and is also a full-sister to grade II winner Altazarr.

Oak Motte (Valid Expectations - Raven's Bride by Cherokee Colony) has run twice at Arlington Park. He finished 2nd in a 4.5 furlong race on July 5, and then won a 6 furlong race on August 8. Oak Motte is a half-brother to one winner. His dam, Raven's Bride, is a half-sister to 8 winners, including grade II winner Afto.

Beware the Tiger (Hold That Tiger - Brian's Beauty by With Approval) has run three times, all in Maiden Claiming races at Arlington Park. He finished 10th on July 9, 4th on July 30, and won a 6 furlong race on August 20. Beware the Tiger sold for $25,000 as a yearling, and $35,000 as a 2-year old. He is out of the winning mare Brian's Beauty, who has produced 3 winners. Brian's Beauty is a half-sister to three stakes winners.

Westshore (Saint Liam - Alexi Dancer by A. P. Indy), who has been working at Saratoga for some time, debuts at 7 furlongs at that track. His most recent work was on September 1, when he went 5 furlongs in 1:00.66. Westshore is a half-brother to grade III stakes-placed Gresham. Gresham won 2 races at 2, and also finished 3rd in the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Stakes (gr. III) that season. Westshore's dam, Alexi Dancer, is a daughter of Pike Place Dancer, who won the 1996 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). Saint Liam's 25 runners have made 48 total starts, recording 5 wins, 1 second, 6 thirds, and $106,747.

Captain Stone (Sky Mesa - Thunder Warmth by Thunder Gulch) and Ice Box (Pulpit - Spice Island by Tabasco Cat) met on August 9 at Saratoga, in a 6 furlong race. Captain Stone was 6th and Ice Box finished 7th. Captain Stone previously finished 5th at Arlington Park on July 16. He sold for $100,000 as a 2-year old, and is out of the unplaced mare Thunder Warmth. Thunder Warmth is half-sister to 7 winners, including stakes winners So Cozy and Special Power. Ice Box sold for $125,000 as a yearling. Grade II winner Spice Island, dam of Ice Box, earned $487,376 in 28 starts. However, much of her earnings came on the turf. Spice Island is one of my all-time favorites, but I would prefer to see this one on the turf.

In Just We Trust (Forest Danger - Trust Fund by Conquistador Cielo), who was 4th in his only start, at Saratoga on August 3, is by first-crop sire Forest Danger. Forest Danger's 18 runners have made 33 combined starts, registering 3 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds, and $76,502. In Just We Trust sold for $190,000 as a weanling, and $275,000 as a yearling. He is out of the winning mare Trust Fund, who was a winner at 2. Trust Fund has produced 3 winners from 4 to run.

Also finishing 4th in his lone start was Devonshire (Royal Academy - Ice Cream Cone by Seeking the Gold), who ran at Saratoga on July 29. He was a $20,000 yearling, and is out of the winning mare Ice Cream Cone. Ice Cream Cone has produced 3 winners. Ice Cream Cone is a daughter of grade I winner Queens Court Queen.

El Primero (El Corredor - Ashlee's Lady by Gilded Time) ran on a sloppy Saratoga track on August 29, finishing 5th. He sold for $80,000 as a weanling, $195,000 as a yearling, and $150,000 as a 2-year old. He is the first foal out of the unplaced mare Ashlee's Lady. Ashlee's Lady is a half-sister to 4 winners, including stakes winner Arch Lady and grade I winner Healthy Addiction, who earned over a million dollars. Ashlee's Lady is also a full-sister to stakes-placed Langoureuse.

Finishing 6th in a 6 furlong race at Saratoga on August 15 was Callide Valley (Indian Charlie - Cheri Chardoneigh by Hennessy). It was his first and only start. Callide Valley brought $140,000 as a weanling, and is out of the winning mare Cheri Chardoneigh. Cheri Chardoneight is a half-sister to 9 winners, including stakes winners Lake Music and Gold From the West, and grade III winner Fifth Overture.

Northern Giant (Giant's Causeway - Jessi Take Charge by War Chant) was 9th in his only start, on August 22 at Saratoga. A $150,000 yearling, Northern Giant is the 2nd foal out of the unraced mare Jessi Take Charge. Jessi Take Charge is a half-sister to 4 winners, including stakes winners Eventail and Commendation, and grade I winner Take Charge Lady. Take Charge Lady won her first 3 races at 2, including the Alcibiades (gr. II).

The remaining entrants are unraced, including Keeneland Breeze (A. P. Indy - Taegu by Halo), who sold for $1.5 million as a yearling. He is out of the winning mare Taegu, who has produced 2 winners, including grade II winner Classic Elegance. Classic Elegance won her debut at 2, and also took the Schuylerville (gr. II) and the Debutante (gr. III) that year.

Selling for $200,000 as a yearling was Volition (A. P. Indy - Westerly Breeze by Gone West), who is out of grade II winner Westerly Breeze. Westerly Breeze won 2 races as a 2-year old, including the Alcibiades (gr. II). She has produced one winner from one to run. That winner, Carmel by the Sea, is a full-brother to Volition.

Gravitas (Dynaformer - Honor Bestowed by Honor Grades) is out of the winning mare Honor Bestowed. Honor Bestowed has produced stakes winner Taqarub. Taqarub was 2 for 2 at 2, and has earned $134,827 through 2009. Honor Bestowed is a half-sister to grade I winners Plenty of Grace and Soaring Softly.
