News and Notes

In addition to the results below, Carnacki (colt; Ghostzapper - Guana (FR) by Sillery) ran in a 7 furlong race at Kempton in England, finishing 14th (last). It was his first start. Carnacki is out of stakes winner Guana, who was a winner at 2. Guana has produced the winner Iquana Jo, who also won at 2.

Anna Can't Catch the Foxy Jackpot

Everyone in the main body of the race stayed in, the only scratches were AE entrants Dinnr With Nikki C (Rio Verde - Securitized Debt by Skip Trial) and Bookdmyoceancruise (Indian Ocean - She's Booked by Notebook). Sheza Foxy Jackpot (Jackpot - Stonecoldfox by In Excess (IRE)) took all the early money, but Vivacious Anna (Afleet Alex - Petite Chatte by Storm Cat) was favored when the gates opened. Fatal Edge (Definite Edge - Ah Fatal (ARG) by Ahmad (ARG)) looked a little on edge, while Vivacious Anna and Chatty Lula (Rio Verde - Tudeludelu by Swiss Yodeler) looked good in the warm-up. Vivacious Anna didn't get the best break, but it was better than her stumbling debut. Warren's Hot Tide (Mongol Warrior - Slew the Princess by Slew's Royalty) took the early advantage, but she stopped after a half and was eased. Chatty Lula inherited the lead at that point, but she couldn't hold off Sheza Foxy Jackpot, who surged to the front. Vivacious Anna was coming, but it was too late. She did overtake Chatty Lula to take second.

An Expression of Pride

Truchan (Stephen Got Even - Fact of Matter by Summer Squall) was scratched. Proud Expression (Proud Accolade - Valid Expression by Valid Appeal) and Bogue Sound (Crafty Shaw - Carolina Blue by Victory Gallop) both were respected at the windows, with Bogue Sound going off as the slight favorite. He was definitely the one that caught my eye in the preliminaries. Tactition (Afleet Alex - Natural Carma by Valiant Nature) also received some attention, going off at 4-1. Proud Expression sprang to the lead, and soon was clear of the pack. The nearest pursuer was Marvelous Marv (Strong Hope - Bisbee by Believe It). Tactition was near the back. Park Rules (Peace Rules - Chelsea Park by El Prado (IRE)) made a bid on the turn, but he couldn't catch Proud Expression, who went on to win by better than 4. However, Park Rules was clear of the rest. Bogue Sound's rider lost his whip, but it's doubtful this affected his final placing. Tactition actually did better than I thought watching live, as he passed a couple late and finished 7th. Proud Expression is the 12th winner for his sire Proud Accolade. Watch the Replay.

Wild Testimony is Especially Fleet

Purely Perfect (Pure Precision - Wollaston's Baby by Wollaston) was scratched, allowing Proprium (Harlan's Holiday - Delivery Day by Dayjur) to get into the race from the AE list. Wild Testimony (Forest Wildcat - Grisham by Grindstone) was favored at post time, but Fleet Special (Afleet Alex - Dance Alexa by Southern Halo) took some money as well. I liked the look of Dancinginthecity (City Zip - Mystery Dance by Sword Dance (IRE)). Proprium outbroke the field, but was overtaken early by Wild Testimony. Fleet Special secured a good spot, and seemed poised to make a move, but she weakened a bit in the stretch to finish fourth. Shes Charismatic (Aldebaran - Never Look Back by Charismatic) and Government Bailout (Johannesburg - Money Helps by Coronado's Quest) were both moving well late, but Wild Testimony was home free, winning by 4. Unraced Afleet Alan (Afleet Alex - Madrone by Doneraile Court) and one-time starter Doubles Partner (Rock Hard Ten - Serena's Sister by Rahy) meet in this contest, scheduled for 7 furlongs on the Belmont Park turf.

Afleet Alan sold for $135,000 as a yearling, and is the first foal out of stakes-placed Madrone. Madrone was a debut winner at 2. She is also a half-sister to stakes winners Lucky Livi and Lottacosta. Afleet Alan has been working at Saratoga, including 4 works on the turf training track. He most recently went 5 furlongs in 1:04.22 on the turf training track on September 4. Afleet Alex's 35 runners have made 78 total starts, recording 8 wins, 14 seconds, 9 thirds, and $465,893.

Doubles Partner didn't run much in his debut on the Saratoga dirt on July 29, finishing 11th. He's been working regularly since then, including a 5 furlong work in 1:00.53 on September 6. Doubles Partner sold for $450,000 as a yearling. His dam, Serena's Sister, is a full-sister to champion Serena's Song. Serena's Sister has produced 3 winners, including turf stakes winner Stormy Venus. Rock Hard Ten's 16 runners have made 26 total starts, recording 3 wins, 4 seconds, and $170,209.

Eto'o (Van Nistelrooy - Joyful Jovian by St. Jovite) and Drover (Storm Cat - Goulash by Mari's Book) met at 5.5 furlongs on the Saratoga turf on August 14, with Eto'o finishing 3rd and Drover 4th. Eto'o is a half-brother to 4 winners, one of which won on the turf at 2. Stakes winner Goulash, dam of Drover, earned $162,975 in her career. She has produced 6 winners, including champion Ashado and Sunriver, a grade I winner on the turf, as well as grade III winner Saint Stephen, who was a turf stakes winner. Three of Drover's siblings won at 2. Drover is part of an entry with Doubles Partner.

The only other horse with experience in the main field is Hammering Buckeye (Stormin Fever - Biding Time by Seeking the Gold), who finished 10th in his only start, a 6.5 furlong race on the dirst at Saratoga on August 22. Hammering Buckeye sold for just $7,000 as a yearling, but brought $110,000 as a 2-year old. Grade II winner Biding Time, dam of Hammering Buckeye, was a winner at 2 and was also grade II stakes-placed that year. Overall, Biding Time earned $414,887. Biding Time has produced 2 winners, one of which won at 2.

The presence of Satum (Tumblebrutus - Sacramentada (CHI) by Northair) in this field would seem to guarantee that it comes off the turf, because I've lost track of how many times he has been entered and scratched when races have come off of the turf. Satum was bred in Chile, but on Northern Hemisphere time. He is out of Sacramentada, who was a group I winner in Chile and a grade II winner in the U.S. Sacramentada was a winner at 2, and also won on the turf. Sacramentada is the dam of grade I winner Hystericalady and 3 other winners. Hystericalady was a debut winner at 2 and earned $2,390,556.

Peat Bay (Smoke Glacken - Coverly by Saint Ballado) is part of an entry with Satum. He is the second foal out of the unplaced mare Coverly. Coverly is a half-sister to 9 winners, including grade III winner Tropicool and grade III turf winner Mending Fences.

El Tune (El Corredor - Our Tune by Concorde's Tune) brought $80,000 as a yearling, and is the first foal out of stakes winner Our Tune. Our Tune is a half-sister to Secret Flag, who was grade I stakes-placed in the Dominican Republic.

College Grad (Langfuhr - Greeley's Starre by Mr. Greeley) sold for $55,000 as a yearling, and $75,000 as a 2-year old. He is the first foal out of unraced Greeley's Starre. Greeley's Starre is full-sister to grade II winner Greeley's Galaxy, and a half-sister to 3 winners.

Imaging (Dynaformer - Gaze by Danzig) is a full-brother to Perusal, who was stakes-placed on the turf. Perusal did not run at 2, but he did win his turf debut at 3. Imaging's dam, Gaze, is a half-sister to 5 winners, including stakes winner Military Look, grade III turf winner Warning Glance, and grade I winner Coronado's Quest.

Little Top (Giant's Causeway - Thorough Fair by Quiet American) is out of the winning mare Thorough Fair. Thorough Fair is the dam of 5 winners, including grade II winner Spellbinder and grade I winner Whywhywhy. Two of Little Top's siblings won at 2, including Whywhywhy, who won three graded stakes at 2, including the Futurity (gr. I).

Montesquieu (Maria's Mon - Incredulous (FR) by Indian Ridge (IRE)) is out of the turf winning mare Incredulous. Incredulous has produced 3 winners, including Sir Gerry, a group II winner on the turf. All of Montesquieu's winning siblings won on the turf, and 2 were debut winners at 2 on the turf.

On the AE list for this race are unraced Unique Tune (Concorde's Tune - Unique Charm by Pentelicus) and El Commodore (El Prado (IRE)) - Fancy Clancy by Rahy), who has run 3 times. Unique Tune is a half-brother to 4 winners, including stakes-placed Sweet Yulianna. One of Unique Tune's siblings won at 2 and another won on the turf. El Commodore finished 7th on the Belmont turf on July 11, 6th on the Saratoga dirt on August 3, and 9th at 1 1/16 miles on the Saratoga turf on August 27. He is out of turf winner Fancy Clancy. Fancy Clancy has produced 4 winners, including stakes winner Fancy Fusaichi. Two of her offspring won on the turf. If El Commodore draws into the race, I will probably think he's the best looker in the paddock. He is one of those horses who always looks good to me, although so far he hasn't run to his looks.

On the MTO list for this race is unraced Thomas Got Even (Stephen Got Even - Tomisue's Pleasure by Seeking the Gold), who is part of an entry with Little Top. He is a half-brother to 2 winners, and a full-brother to 2 winners, including grade III winner Time to Get Even. One of Thomas Got Even's full-siblings was a debut winner at 2.
