News and Notes

Lyrique (Rock Hard Ten - America America by Mister Baileys (GB)) was scratched at Arlington. The winner of that one was Holiday in Dixie (Harlan's Holiday - Melodioso by Dixieland Band), who wore down the pacesetters. Watch the Replay.

A Successful Royal Battle

Sky Astro (Sky Mesa - Iron Feather by Crafty Prospector) was the only scratch. Waldheim (Purge - Dream Job by Wild Again) was the even money choice. None of ours got much respect at the windows, Battle Royal (Saint Liam - Queen Marge by Grindstone) was 11-1, Bear's Hard Ten (Rock Hard Ten - Playforme by Gone West) was 12-1, and Viking Fleet (Afleet Alex - Ellieonthemarch by Old Trieste) was 84-1. Vezeau Beach (Harlan's Holiday - Yamuna by Forty Niner) was looking good in the paddock, as was Steel Dust (Friends Lake - Personify by Tabasco Cat). Bear's Hard Ten is an impressive specimen, a chip off the old block. As they moved onto the track, Giant's Tomb (Awesome Again - Song of the Wild by Gone West) dumped his rider and took off. But, they collected him fairly quickly. This did, however, cause a bit of a delay in the start of the race. A number of them were involved early, including Bear's Hard Ten and War Treaty (Grand Slam - Enduring Will by Arch), but it was Battle Royal who emerged with the lead. Sangore (Strong Hope - Life (FR) by Anabaa) took a run at him on the inside, and favorite Waldheim rallied on the outside, but Batle Royal held them all off for the win. Closing a lot of ground late was Giant's Tomb, who ended up third. Bear's Hard Ten ran evenly late and ended up 5th, not a bad debut. Viking Fleet was never much involved, beating one. Battle Royal is the 5th winner for Saint Liam. Watch the Replay.

The Quickest Ride Wins

Buddy's Saint (Saint Liam - Tuzia by Blushing John) was scratched, as well as City Wolf (Giant's Causeway - Baby Zip by Relaunch), the half-brother to Ghostzapper and City Zip, and Highveldt Storm (Johannesburg - Hayley's Dancer by Mr. Greeley). Gonna Get Burned (Tale of the Cat - Play With Fire by Boundary) was a late scratch. Strictly Society (Golden Missile - Awful Smart by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) was favored, with Quick Ride (Afleet Alex - Baby Lets Cruise by Tale of the Cat) second-choice. Lambeau Legend (Storm Cat - Turko's Turn by Turkoman), the half-brother to Point Given, looked every bit of his $1.2 million dollar price tag, but winning first time out seemed like a stretch. Litigation Risk (Closing Argument - Silver Bliss by Silver Deputy) looked good in the paddock, as did Quick Ride. Quick Ride broke well, but Lil Snitch (Bernstein - Sparkler by Carson City) cleared the field, and he quickly sprinted to a clear lead. Strictly Society and Lambeau Legend closed in on the leader, but rallying on the outside was Quick Ride. He cruised to the lead and pulled away, winning by better than 2. Litigation Risk and Unbridled Fury (Broken Vow - Val Marie by Coronado's Quest) came on late to take second and third. Lambeau Legend ended up last, but I can't wait to see him run again. Quick Ride is the 8th winner for Afleet Alex. Watch the Replay.

Mr. Bristol Too Afleet Again

Pugaboo (Afleet Alex - Incircle Miss by Dayjur) and Cutter (Saint Liam - Brite Diamond by Deputy Minister) were scratched, so it was left up to Afleet Again (Afleet Alex - Lucky Again by Wild Again). Also scratched were Ensign Three Stix (Say Florida Sandy - Pent Up Fantasy by Pentelicus) and Social Page (A. P. Indy - Private Status by Alydar). Track condition was sloppy. Mr. Bristol (Gone West - Purrfectly by Storm Cat) was the slight favorite over Pulpit's Jewel (Pulpit - She's a Jewel by Succesful Appeal). Afleet Again was looking lively in the paddock. R. B. Float (Repent - Big Red Float by Bianconi) seemed to be enjoying the wet track. At the break, Onelittleindianboy (Flatter - Indian Fight by Indian Charlie) and R. B. Float fought for the lead, with Gold Medallion (Medaglia d'Oro - Supah Gem by Gold Meridian) tracking in third. Afleet Again was in a good position, around mid-pack. Gold Medallion made his move and took the lead, but he couldn't hold off the closing kicks of Pulpit's Jewel and Mr. Bristol, who was goinng best of all and got the victory. Afleet Again ended up 5th. He was wide and running a bit greenly late. Watch the Replay.

Listen In to this Win

The only scratches were the AEs: Hathors Legacy (Buddha - Amandas Bandit by Royal Academy) and Ann (Successful Appeal - Mare Ann by Aloma's Ruler). The track was sloppy, and Playntell (The Cliff's Edge - Name Tag by Our Emblem) was favored at post time. No Such Word (Canadian Frontier - Muskoka Ice by It's Freezing) was feeling good on the track, and Listen In (Wiseman's Ferry - Listening Post by Artax) made a positive impression. The big field began to get restless as post time approached. Taverna M (Fusaichi Pegasus - Our Dear Ruth by Baldski) took a brief lead, but Angels in Arms (Saint Liam - Mayfield by Exploit) came through from her rail spot to take command. She zipped along through the opening furlongs, with Listen In her nearest pursuer. She lost a little steam in the stretch, and Listen In got her head in front. Late on the scene were Ms Vanenzza (Successful Appeal - Speaking of Time by Gilded Time) and No Such Word. Angels in Arms held fairly well to finish 4th, definitely a promising debut. Recession Proof (Afleet Alex - Pert Lady by Cox's Ridge) started slowly and didn't show much, finishing 9th. Watch the Replay.
