William Speaks Loudly in the Sunday Silence

The Sunday Silence was taken off the turf and run at 1 1/16 miles on the fast main track. Speightstown Son (Speightstown - Makin a Statement by Stage Door Johnny) was scratched. William's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Blush by Menifee) was made the favorite, despite the fact that he had never run on the dirt. In the early going, it didn't seem as though he cared for the surface. He was last, a good 5 lengths behind the second-to-last horse. He was saving ground, however, sticking to the rail. Up front, Why Not Be Perfect (Whywhywhy - Perfect Time by Matchlite) was on the lead, with King of the Bayou (K One King - Smarter Is Better by Beau Genius) chasing. They set some rather modest fractions, and most of the pack was close together, apart from William's Kitten. William's Kitten finally moved into the picture on the far turn. He was rolling 5 or 6 wide, and swept by them all. Garrett Gomez took a peek back and geared him down late, as he cruised to the wire. The officially margin was 4 3/4 lengths. After this performance, it will be interesting to see if they stay with the dirt for William's Kitten, or go back to the turf. William's Kitten is the second stakes winner for Kitten's Joy, who by my reckoning has moved to the top of the first-crop sire list. Watch the Replay.

Bridgetown Takes Summer from Becky's Kitten

Fantastico Roberto (Refuse To Bend (IRE) - Fantastic Account (GB) by Fantastic Light) took the early money, but Stormy Lord (Stormy Atlantic - Lady Auchamore by Meadowlake) was favored at post time. Becky's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Caterette by Cozzene) was a respectable 6-1. Bridgetown (Speightstown - Ellesmere by Tabasco Cat) broke on top, but let Stormy Lord took control early. However, Bridgetown did not let Stormy Lord get too far in front. Mobil Unit (Mobil - Stop Looking by Dr. Adagio) also assumed a stalking position. Becky's Kitten was at the back at this point. Bridgetown made his move in the stretch, and surged past Stormy Lord. Becky's Kitten and Fantastico Roberto both closed well. They made a dent in Bridgetown's lead, but couldn't overtake him. However, Becky's Kitten outfought Fantastico Roberto to get second. Watch the Replay.

Muhaaseb is Condemned

Magnification (Forest Wildcat - Blossomed by Deputy Minister) was scratched. Quiet All American (Forest Camp - Quiet Summernight by Quiet American) took the early money, but Condemned (Speightstown - Pent Up Kiss by Pentelicus), the only entrant with experience, was the post-time favorite. Highveldt Storm (Johannesburg - Hayley's Dancer by Mr. Greeley) made a positive impression. Muhaaseb (Ghostzapper - Ticket to Houston by Houston) looked a little out of sorts in the paddock. Once on the track, he got a strong warm-up, as did Condemned. Muhaaseb was a little stubborn at the load, but nothing too serious. Muhaaseb broke well, but Condemned outquicked him to take the lead. Condemned soon sprinted clear. Muhaaseb fell back, and looked done. However, he was swung wide late and started moving again. Condemned was long gone, but Muhaaseb was more than 9 lengths in front of the rest, and halved Condemned's lead from 8 to 4 lengths. Certainly, this was an impressive victory for Condemned, but it also was a promising debut for Muhaaseb. Watch the Replay.

Azadi Too Much for Alex's Sis Casey

Pleasantly Blonde (Pleasant Tap - Buff 'n Polish by Polish Numbers) and Waimea Bay (Smoke Glacken - Roses for Alyse by Java Gold) were scratched. Lil Precious (Forestry - Zahwah by Rahy) was favored. Alex's Sis Casey (Afleet Alex - Pose by Nureyev) took some early action, but ended up going off near her morning-line of 12-1. Favorite Lil Precious was a little agitated in the paddock, while Broken Rules (Peace Rules - Puddy Cat by Mountain Cat) looked good. Azadi (Forest Camp - Ice Carnival by Two Punch) warmed up strong. Tina's Tiger (Tiger Ridge - Formal Dress by Formal Dinner) broke through the gate during the load, but didn't get far and was soon loaded again. Interestingly, Azadi was the only horse not in the gate when this happened. As the gates opened, Lil Precious went right to the front. She was followed closely by Azadi. These two soon separated themselves from the rest of the field. Lil Precious maintained her advantage most of the way, but Azadi got her head in front when it counted, and took the victory. Picabo's Concho (Trippi - Picabo Silver by Gold Meridian) made up ground late to finish a good third. Alex's Sis Casey was steadied early, and never really got involved after that, finishing 10th (last). Watch the Replay.
