Baker's Dozen

Jill's Kitten and Kera's Kitten both come through at Kentucky Downs to bring Kitten's Joy's number of winners to 13. Both offspring are bred and owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, and both were ridden by Miguel Mena. Jill's Kitten is trained by Wesley Ward and Kera's Kitten is trained by Michael Maker.

Jill wins Becauseshecan

Star Crazy (Consolidator - Makin' Calls by Phone Trick) was the only scratch. Jill's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Southern Barfly by Southern Halo) was favored. She was a little agitated in the walking ring, but had her game face on once on the track. Anna's Light (North Light (IRE) - Zeuqram's Maria E by Maria's Mon) got a good warm-up. Worthy Miss (Perfect Soul (IRE) - Miss Abbott by Cure the Blues) was on the lead early, with Mademoiselle Slew (Doneraile Court - Sanpitersburg by Sandpit (BRZ)) and Top Smoocher (Monashee Mountain - Kissinleaf by Kissin Kris) going after her. Jill's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Southern Barfly by Southern Halo) wasn't far back. As they hit the stretch, four of them looked to have a shot: Worthy Miss, Top Smoocher, Jill's Kitten, and Becauseshecan (Whywhywhy - Lady Angelina by Theatrical (IRE)). Top Smoocher weakened, but the other three fought to the wire. It was Jill's Kitten, coming between horses, who had the best late kick to get the win. Interestingly, they talked to trainer Wesley Ward after the race and he said that Kitten's Joy had 13 or 14 winners. It wasn't correct at the time, but it was by the end of the day. Perhaps Ward is psychic?

Kera's Kitten Kicks Away

Vindication Reign (Vindication - Classic Reign by Vice Regent) and Advantage Menifee (Menifee - Vantage by Smart Strike) were scratched. The track condition was changed to soft before this race. Positive Split (Repent - Hope of Nations by Two Punch) took the early money, but Kera's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Mrs. K. by Dixieland Band) was the favorite when the gates opened. There was a delay, as a jockey change was announced for Positive Split. When they finally got onto the track, Kera's Kitten looked upset. I was a little worried that he wouldn't have time to settle, since it was announced that the horses were going straight to the gate. Not to worry, as War Axe (Thunderello - Wavy Journey by Wavering Monarch) had other ideas. He dumped War Axe and took off. War Axe was apprehended fairly quickly, but was a late scratch. Court wasn't happy, but unhurt. Then, Atom Splitter (Mr. Greeley - Angelina Capote by Capote) was scratched. Not sure what happened with him, Orlando Mojica rode him back to the saddling area. Finally, they were loading. All the delay helped Kera's Kitten, he looked calm going into the gate. He broke well and was soon on the lead. Angel's Can Boogie (Flatter - Audrey's Angel by Capote) was the closest pursuer. In the stretch, Kera's Kitten spurted away. Positive Split was coming from off the pace, but Kera's Kitten had enough to hold him off. A very nice debut for Kera's Kitten, as it's not always the easiest mission to go gate-to-wire at Kentucky Downs. This race was the last one run at Kentucky Downs on September 21, the rest were canceled because of the weather.
