Cody Outfights Hazards of Love

It was raining at Turfway, but of course the Polytrack remained fast. Hazards of Love (Saint Liam - Spring Rush by Wild Rush) was favored, and Baby Afleet (Afleet Alex - Dancen in the Sun by Regal Classic) was a respectable 7-1. He was the pick of the track handicapper, which usually spells doom. Baby Afleet did look good warming up. As they started the load, the fun began. First, Stay Put (Broken Vow - O. K. Mom by Dixieland Band) reared and dropped James Lopez. He was ok, however, and the outrider snagged Stay Put quickly. Then, Next May (Grand Reward - Quiet Miss by Quiet American) reared in the gate, leaving Victor Lebron favoring his knee. All the horses were backed out, and Next May was a late scratch. Bright Prince (Prince Eddington - Queen of Money by Corporate Report) seemed a little aggravated by the delay, and Stay Put started acting up again. Finally, they were off. Bright Prince went to the lead closely followed by Hazards of Love. Baby Afleet was also in a good spot, around 3rd or 4th. The jockey on Bright Prince was working hard, while Hazards of Love was just cruising. He moved to the lead after 6 furlongs. But, Codoy (Bernstein - Puype's Dream by Kris S.) was moving too. Codoy wore down Hazards of Love to get the win by a neck. Baby Afleet tired late, finishing 7th. Watch the Replay.

Siberian Heart Beats Anna

First-timer Sleepy Time Girl (Unbridled Native - Sit Back 'n Relax by Corwyn Bay (IRE)) was the buzz horse, taking all the early money. But, the experienced Vivacious Anna (Afleet Alex - Petite Chatte by Storm Cat) was favored at post time. Obvious Choice (Marino Marini - Undressed by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) had a lot of energy in the paddock, while Fifty K (Freespool - Popular Opinion by Half a Year) looked like all of this was new to here, despite the fact that she was making her 6th start. Vivacious Anna looked ready. Sleepy Time Girl balked at the gate, and Sheskey (Scrimshaw - Buckarette by Buckaroo) was restless. Vivacious Anna broke well, but was stuck wide due to her outside post. Obvious Choice went to the lead, pressed by Bookdmyoceancruise (Indian Ocean - She's Booked by Notebook). Vivacious Anna looked a little out of sorts, trying to find a comfortable spot. Bookdmyoceancruise gave up after a half, and Siberian Heart (Siberian Summer - Heart's Desire by Memo (CHI)) made her move. She went by a weakening Obvious Choice and pulled away. Meanwhile, Vivacious Anna was finally finding her best stride. Sheskey was making a move too. She veered out, taking Vivacious Anna with her. This forced Vivacious Anna to check. She got going again, and finished second, but there was no catching Siberian Heart after that incident. Watching the replay, however, it seemed as though Vivacious Anna was trying to get out as well. Unfortunately, we do not have Fairplex replays, but you can see it at Despite the fact that Vivacious Anna has finished second twice at Fairplex, I can't wait until she can stretch her legs at Santa Anita.

Exhi is King of the Rock

Ponzi Scheme (Sunday Break (JPN) - Queen Majesty by Regal Classic) and The Peloton (El Corredor - Miss Huff n' Puff by Seattle Dancer) were scratched. Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor - Golden Ballet by Moscow Ballet) was the big favorite, but King Rock (Rock Hard Ten - Queen Mindy by King of Kings (IRE)) got some respect at 6-1. He looked good in the paddock. Precipice Trail (Giant's Causeway - Manoa by Seeking the Gold) was hot in the warm-up, and hesitated a bit at the load. Exhi (Maria's Mon - Soldera by Polish Numbers) went to the early lead. King Rock was on the outside, staying out of trouble. Favorite Drosselmeyer was in a good spot on the rail. King Rock made a move, and Drosselmeyer matched him. They seemed poised to overtake the pacesetter, but Exhi just pulled away, extending his lead. His final winning margin was 4 lengths. King Rock flattened out, and lost second late to Drosselmeyer. Watch the Replay.

Asphalt Covers Almooriq and Alan

Cypress Point (Holy Bull - Reason to Ransom by Red Ransom) was scratched, along with AE Eto'o (Van Nistelrooy - Joyful Jovian by St. Jovite) and MTO On Vacation (Harlan's Holiday - Royal Trips by Summer Squall). AE Imaging (Dynaformer - Gaze by Danzig) got to run. Asphalt (War Chant - Island Fire by Island Whirl) was the tepid favorite, and he looked good in the paddock. Mystic Fever (Stormin Fever - Dream Wish by Kingmambo), on the other hand, did not look happy. The load seemed to take forever in this field full of first-timers. Asphalt went to the front soon after the start, and was joined by Gathering Cloud (Tapit - Aly's Crown by Chief's Crown). Almooriq (Ghostzapper - Dash for Money by General Meeting) was in a decent spot on the rail, while Afleet Alan (Afleet Alex - Madrone by Doneraile Court) was at the back. Asphalt and Gathering Cloud soon separated themselves from the rest of the field, creating a virtual match race. It seemed as though Gathering Cloud would eventually go by, but he never did, as Asphalt prevailed by a neck. Imaging made up ground late to pick up third. Almooriq tired a little late and ended up 6th. Afleet Alan passed one to finish 11th. Watch the Replay.

The Ball Thunders Past the Fleet

Airofindifference (Wekiva Springs - Aloha Baby by W. D. Jacks) and Empire Rising (Empire Maker - Seeking the Ring by Seeking the Gold) were scratched. Vicar Street (Vicar - Sudden Profit by At the Threshold) was favored. At the break, Kirkland Lake (Pioneering - Miss Nureyev by Nureyev) sprinted to the lead. Buggs Pride (Western Pride - Glitterball by Northern Afleet) stumbled badly at the start and then was rank.Viking Fleet (Afleet Alex - Ellieonthemarch by Old Trieste) had only Buggs Pride beat. Kirklands Lake continued to extend his lead, building up a 9 length advantage. As they rounded the final turn, the field began to catch him. Thunder Ball (Golden Missile - Grandiosa by El Prado (IRE)) went by first, but Vicar Street (Vicar - Sudden Profit by At the Threshold) went with him. Thunder Ball had the jump, however, and got the victory. Kirkland Lake held on for third. Viking Fleet maintained his 6th place position the whole way round, but he almost caught the 5th place finisher. Watch the Replay.
