Cat Ruler Faces Dubai Heat to be Almost Legendary

News and Notes

Happy Birthday to Augustus, who was born on September 23 in 63 BCE. It is also my birthday today, but that is of much less significance.

Stakes Winner Pamona Ball (3yo filly; Pleasantly Perfect - Fireman's Ball by Hennessy) made her first start of 2009 today, finishing third in the Cat Chat Stakes at a mile at Belmont Park. The Medaglia d'Oro 3-year old filly Devil by Design (Medaglia d'Oro - Beauty's Due by Devil His Due) was second.

I was going to preview a bonus race today, since our only race on September 24 is a Maiden Claiming race at Retama, but there seems to be a dearth of 2-year old Maiden Special races scheduled for tomorrow. So for today it's just Cat Ruler.

Dolly Sings to Playful Pussycat

Noble Gest (Tomahawk - Oh Dear by Sea Wall) was favored, Playful Pussycat (Kitten's Joy - Feisty Ferdinand by Ferdinand) was a respectable 7-1. Early Spring (Bold Executive - Wiry Willie by Iskandar Elakbar) went to the early lead. Playful Pussycat was up with the leader for a time, but then dropped back. Also up with the pace was Daisy Overton (Stormy Atlantic - Jingle Berry by Two Punch). She got her head in front in the stretch, but Sing to Me Dolly (Button Raise - Dolly Rocker by Bold n' Flashy) rallied from off the pace for the victory. I was afraid that Playful Pussycat was going to drop to the back as she did last time out, but instead she came on again to a decent second. The favorite, Noble Gest, was pulled up.

Completing the field are unraced entrants Bon Ami Pete (Lydgate - Holly D by Hey Rob) and Dubai Heat (E Dubai - Beach Heat by Dixieland Heat). Bon Ami Pete is by first-crop sire Lydgate, who is by Pulpit. Lydgate was a grade III winner on the turf. He has had 7 starters, which have run 21 total times, recording 4 seconds, 3 thirds, and $39,412. Bon Ami Pete is a half-brother to 4 winners, including stakes winner Handsomchamp. Dubai Heat is out of stakes-placed Beach Heat, who was a debut winner at 2, and also stakes-placed that season. She was also a winner on the turf.
