Spiteful Simply Outruns Imaginary Saint

Imaginary Saint (Saint Liam - Imaginary Cat by Storm Cat) and entrymate Cat Day (Aldebran - Cat Play by Storm Cat) were favored, but also getting a lot of attention at the windows was Simply Spiteful (Speightstown - Deb's Charm by Silver Charm), one of the experienced entrants. She looked good in the warm-up. Veuve (Arch - Wonderful by Olympio) was looking good too. The load went pretty smoothly, considering most of these were making their first starts. Proud Bog (Proud Accolade - United Bog by Linkage) broke best, but Simply Spiteful went right after her. Imaginary Saint was on the rail with the second group. Proud Bog began to fall back, and Cat Day took up the chase. But, it was futile. Simply Spiteful began moving farther and farther in front. Jeremy Rose looked behind for competition, but there wasn't any. She won by better than 7. Imaginary Saint came on late to take the second, in a nice debut run. She didn't threaten Simply Spiteful, but she was best of the rest. Watch the Replay.

This is a good race for first-crop sire fans, there are 5 freshman sires represented, including Rock Hard Ten, sire of Furious Run (Rock Hard Ten - One Dream Cat by Storm Cat).

Furious Run makes his second start, after finishing 2nd first time out in the mud on August 23 at Saratoga. That race was originally scheduled for the turf. We'll see if this one goes on the grass, as they were off the turf at Delaware on September 28. Since his race, Furious Run has been working at Saratoga, including 4 furlongs in :50.34 on September 24. He sold for $45,000 as a yearling, and $120,000 as a 2-year old. He is out of the unplaced mare One Dream Cat, who is a daughter of 1994 Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) winner One Dreamer. One Dreamer earned $1,266,067, and has produced winner W. L.'s Legend. Rock Hard Ten's 17 runners have run 33 total times, recording 3 wins, 4 seconds, 2 thirds, and $183,109.

Thunder Brew (Milwaukee Brew - Cindy Woo Who by Thunder Gulch) and Parthian (Giant's Causeway - Inny River by Seattle Slew) met at a mile and 70 yards on the Delaware turf on September 18, with Thunder Brew finishing 2nd and Parthian 3rd. It was Thunder Brew's first start. He is the first foal out of the unraced mare Cindy Woo Who. Cindy Woo Who is a half-sister to 6 winners, including turf stakes winner Jeb's Wild. Parthian has run 6 total times, and finished 3rd 5 times. His other starts were on the dirt at Delaware Park. Parthian sold for $200,000 as a weanling and $300,000 as a 2-year old. He is a half-brother to 6 winners, including stakes winner Welcome Inn and group II turf winner Montgomery's Arch. Three of Parthian's siblings won at 2, and 4 won on the turf.

The only other entrant with turf experience is Calipari (Mr. Greeley - Concentric by Shadeed), who was 5th in his only race, at 1 1/16 mile on the Saratoga turf on August 5. He sold for $175,000 as a 2-year old, and is a half-brother to 5 winners, including grade I winner Circle of Life. Circle of Life won the Spinaway (gr. I) at 2.

Champ Tony (Limehouse - Toe in the Water by Bertrando), by first-crop sire Limehouse, has made three starts at Delaware Park. He was 6th on July 25, 2nd on August 19, and 7th on September 8. Limehouse has had 31 runners who have made 73 combined starts, recording 10 wins, 15 seconds, 9 thirds, and $392,803. Champ Tony, who sold for $21,000 as a yearling, is a half-brother to 2 winners, including turf stakes-placed Wye. One of his siblings won at 2, and both won on the turf. His dam is a half-sister to grade III turf winner Canon Can and grade II winner Queenie Belle.

Freshman sire Roman Ruler, is the sire of Roman Invasion (Roman Ruler - Princess V. by Memo (CHI)), who was 2nd in his only start, at Monmouth on September 6. Roman Ruler's 48 runners have made 115 combined starts, recording 21 wins, 18 seconds, 18 thirds, and $547,197. Roman Invasion is out of stakes winner Princess V., who won her only race as a 2-year old. Princess V. has produced the winner Strong Belief. Princess V. is also a full- or half-sister to 8 winners, including 3 stakes winners.

Chill Out Cat (D'wildcat - I Did It by Ide) was 8th in his debut on a sloppy track at Monmouth on August 29, and then finished 4th at Monmouth on September 19. He is a half-brother to the winner Dawns Storm, who was a winner at 2. I Did It, dam of Chill Out Cat, is a half-sister to 5 winners.

The last one with experience is Bach (Medaglia d'Oro - Miss Indy Anna by Apalachee), who was 5th in his only start, at a mile and 70 yards on the Delaware Park dirt. He is out of Miss Indy Anna, a grade III winner on the dirt, who was also a stakes winner on the turf. Overall, Miss Indy Anna earned $349,500. Miss Indy Anna has produced 5 winners, 1 of which won at 2, and three of which won on the turf.

Bourbon Barrel (Purge - Cool Dixie by Dixieland Band), who is by first-crop sire Purge, sold for $70,000 as a yearling. Also by a first-year sire is Raven's Choice (Dance With Ravens - Millashand by Regal Intention), by Dance With Ravens. Millashand has produced 2 winners. Millashand is a half-sister to stakes winner Mordacious, and Obliquity, stakes-placed on the turf.

History Ahead (Empire Maker - Mystery Itself by Pulpit) is the first foal out of turf stakes winner Mystery Itself. Mystery Itself was a debut winner on the turf at 2, and earned $165,806 overall. Mystery Itself is a half-sister to 4 winners, including turf stakes-placed Sly One.

Ironically, MTO entrant Spangled Star (Distorted Humor - Spangled by Kris S.) is one of the entrants with turf experience. Or maybe not ironically, since he finished 9th on that surface at Colonial Downs on July 18. Switched to the dirt, he finished 3rd at a mile at Laurel on August 23. Spangled, dam of Spangled Star, was a stakes winner at 2. Spangled is a half-sister to 5 winners, including grade III winner Anklet.
