Winning with Grace

The race was transferred from the turf to the fast main track, so MTO Havre de Grace (Saint Liam - Easter Bunnette by Carson City) made it into the gate. The other MTO, Pleasant Fever (Pleasant Tap - National Fever by Deputy Minister), also ran. Bessie Dahlhammer (Tomorrows Cat - Spectaculaireontap by Signal Tap), Lil Indy (Anasheed - Cresta Lil by Cresta Rider), Martita Sangrita (Johar - Kschessinka by Nureyev), and Trulyagoodact (Act of Duty - Truly the Best by Sword Dance (IRE)) were scratched. Havre de Grace was the big favorite, going off at less than even money. Veil of Tears (Distorted Humor - Safe Haven by A. P. Indy) reared and broke through the starting gate, unseating Anna Napravnik. But, Veil of Tears was quickly apprehended and everyone was ok. Veil of Tears broke on top, but was overtaken quickly by Paisanita (Forestry - Sue's Last Dance by Forty Niner). Havre de Grace walked out of the gate, and trailed the field. Pleasant Fever went up to put some pressure on the leader, and Havre de Grace began to move. After 6 furlongs, Havre de Grace was up with the leaders, and she cruised on by, winning with ease. She is winner number 6 for Saint Liam. Watch the Replay.

Summer Movie Outplays Saintly Seoul

Everyone ran in the main body of the race, so AE Take a Hard Look (Rock Hard Ten - Arjunand by Diesis (GB)) was left on the sidelines. The bettors had trouble deciding between debuter Recap (Storm Cat - Tranquility Lake by Rahy), full-brother to After Market, and Erbeia (Pulpit - Corrazona by El Gran Senor). Everybody else was a nice price. Saintly Seoul (Saint Liam - Seoul by Deputy Minister) was 52-1, but he looked good in the warm-up. I also liked the look of Beau Maverick (Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) - Chetak (IRE) by Halling). Recap was getting a little warm before the race. Royal F J (Royal Academy - Perpetual Motion by Kingmambo) was fussing as they loaded. Beau Maverick went to the lead, pursued by Summer Movie (Holy Bull - Crazy Summer Fling by Summer Squall). Also up close were Royal F J, Windwalker (Dixie Union - Spotlight Dance by Miswaki), and Saintly Seoul. Recap was at the back, rank. Erbeia was also near the back. Beau Maverick began retreating after three-quarters, as Summer Movie and Royal F J dueled. These two battled to the wire, with the outcome decided by the bob of Summer Movie's head. Three or so lengths back, there was a five-horse photo for show, which Saintly Seoul captured. Erbeia ended up 9th, and Recap finished 11th, defeating only early pacesetter Beau Maverick.

Heavy Steve Settles the Score Against Elusive Saint

Settle the Score (Even the Score - Glorious Honour by Honour and Glory) was favored, but Heavy Steve (Delaware Township - Spirit of Flag by Foreign Survivor) received plenty of attention as well. Elusive Saint (Saint Liam - Adopted Daughter by Elusive Quality) was a respectable 5-1. Icy Humour (Sambuca On Ice - Miss Costello by Cobra King) went for the lead from his rail spot, but he couldn't hold off Heavy Steve, who assumed command. Wack a Troll (Roaring Fever - Wacky Miss by Miswaki) was close-up as well. Settle the Score made a run at Heavy Steve, but the latter horse prevailed by a comfortable margin. Everybody's favorite Wack a Troll ran fairly evenly to take third. Elusive Saint made up some ground late to finish 5th.

Bellflower Shows Self Reliance

Street Success (Street Cry (IRE) - Lucky Mistress by Best of Luck) took the early money, but Bellflower (Cherokee Run - Princess Par by Chief's Crown) was the overwhelming favorite when the gates opened. My McKenzie (Dixie Union - Nicarola Catrola by Deputy Minister) was kicking up her heels in the paddock. Self Reliance (Afleet Alex - Grace Avenue by Metfield) looked good out on the track. Congresionalaffair (Congressnalhonor - Sultry Rendevous by Sultry Song) and My McKenzie battled for the early lead. Bellflower was stalking these two. She made her move in the stretch and zipped past the pacesetters. Putting in a nice late move was Gin and Soto (Soto - Gin and Jazz by Taylor's Falls), who significantly reduced the winning margin, but did not seriously threaten Bellflower's victory. Self Reliance passed a few late to finish 7th. Watch the Replay.
