A Journey for a Bear and a Mouse

News and Notes

The Smarty Jones' 2-year old colt Shrewd One (Smarty Jones - Miss Winning Sweep by End Sweep) was an easy winner of the fourth at Belmont, a 6 furlong off-the-turf Maiden Special Weight, paying a nice sum of $50.50. Watch the Replay.

Stellaluce Outpaces Lady Apple

No defections from the field. Stellaluce (Cuvee - Wigwam by Iron Courage) was favored, with second-choice honors going to Freud's Notebook (Freud - Halo's Notebook by Notebook). Lady Apple (Saint Liam - Shot Gun Favorite by Eltish) was ignored at 46-1. Perserverance (Bwana Charlie - Irish Emotion by Precise End) looked good in the paddock. First-timer Silver Tax (Artax - Crafty Move by Silver Deputy) seemed unsure as the rider got aboard. Lady Apple was looking spry in the post parade. At the load, Downtown Hottie (City Zip - Ms Global Warming by Sultry Song) caused the most trouble. Favorite Stellaluce broke well, but Too Critical (Forest Camp - Critical Chant by War Chant) went for the early lead. My Sire's Fire (Hook and Ladder - Perfect Design by Marquetry) applied some pressure. Lady Apple was in a good spot on the rail, around mid-pack. My Sire's Fire moved to the lead in the stretch, but Stellaluce was coming on the outside, and Freud's Notebook made a move on the inside. Stellaluce took the win by a head. Perserverance did some late running to take fourth from Lady Apple, who had to settle for 5th. Watch the Replay.

Sometimes the people who name horses just get it right.  Didn't Theseus fight the Minotaur?  And his sire is Holy Bull.  Clever.

p.s. heard anything about Ubriaco or Sarum?

mz 02 Oct 2009 11:18 AM

In Vancouver BC there's been a Mighty Mouse running by the name of "Spaghetti Mouse." He is now the all time money earning British Columbia bred with well over $800,000 and seeing as he's only ever run in Vancouver and the biggest stakes he's run in (and won) have purses of $100,000, the majority of the stakes he's won have only been worth $50,000, that's pretty darn good!

Yay, Bear's Hard Ten (Rock Hard Ten x Playforme, Gone West) broke his maiden in the 8th at Woodbine! :)

mz - good call on Theseus and the Minotaur.

Ubriaco has run 3 times without hitting the board (last time finished 12th at Arlington on September 6 at a mile). Maybe, the dirt would turn him around. His last work was on the dirt at Hawthorne, so he'll probably make his next start there.

Satum still has only the one start in the slop at Belmont. His last work was on the turf, and I imagine they'll keep trying to get him a turf start.

Hastings Racecourse Fan - Thanks for the info on Spaghetti Mouse. I was impressed with Powermouse today. He was really motoring late.
