The Buzz Delivers

News and Notes

The 5th race at Belmont stayed on the turf, so MTO Ciminella (Afleet Alex - Bruanna by Housebuster) stayed in the barn. The winner was Ms. Thanksgiving (Formal Dinner - Dance On the Green by Green Dancer), who went pretty much gate-to-wire and won by 5.

The Buzz Delivers

Discretionary (Hennessy - Suitably Discreet by Mr. Prospector) took the early money, but Holiday Buzz (Afleet Alex - Dixie Holiday by Dixieland Band) was favored at post time. Sheltowee (Saint Liam - Crafty Oak by Crafty Prospector) was 16-1. Holiday Buzz was a little jumpy in the post parade, Master Sergeant (Thunder Gulch - Vivid Sunset by Mt. Livermore) looked good. Toss and Turn (Strong Hope - One Wild Ride by Southern Halo) went for the early lead, pressed closely by Discretionary (Hennessy - Suitably Discreet by Mr. Prospector). Holiday Buzz secured a nice spot on the rail in fourth, with Sheltowee almost directly behind him. Mister Thayer (Victory Gallop - Wavering Rhythm by Flying Pidgeon) made the first move, coming wide around the turn to pass the pacesetters and take the lead. But, Holiday Buzz was moving too. He came between horses, and then drew off to a nice 2 length win. Sheltowee, who still seems to be running kind of green out there, was 4th. Holiday Buzz is the 9th winner for Afleet Alex. OK, here's my goofy comment today: they named the Ghostzapper - Bird Town colt "Bird Zapper"??

Didn't they have any better ideas?

Just thinking about The Birds, couldn't they have come up with something like "Hitchcock"?

(This is the opposite post to all the ones where I laughed at a clever name)

And before you say it, I know that "Hitchcock" is already taken -- wasn't there a horse running in New York in the last ten years or so?

But still, they could have tried harder.

mz - The most recent Hitchcock I see is a 2003 model. He raced in Ireland and England, but was bred in Kentucky, so that's no good. How about just "The Birds?" Might not be allowed because there is a 2005 Birds.

Speaking of names, I was looking at entries for the weekend and came across an unraced Value Plus 2yo filly called Naughty Bits. She's entered in the 7th at Keeneland on Sunday, October 11. There is a Kitten's Joy in the race (and not one called Kitten - it's Quiet Class) so I will probably do a preview on Saturday.
