News and Notes

City Wolf (Giant's Causeway - Baby Zip by Relaunch), the half-brother to City Zip and Ghostzapper, finally made his debut at Belmont on October 10 after scratching previously. He finished a decent second, but could not overcome Middle of the Nite (Offlee Wild - A Loose Kisser by Kissin Kris). Watch the Replay.

Stakes Results

Champagne Stakes (gr. I)

Dublin (Afleet Alex - Classy Mirage by Storm Bird) was the heavy favorite in the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont, but he really didn't fire, finishing a dull 5th. The winner was Homeboykris (Roman Ruler - One Last Salute by Salutely), who overtook Discreetly Mine (Mineshaft - Pretty Discreet by Private Account) late for a clear victory. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Champagne here.

Dixiana Breeders' Futurity (gr. I)

All the horses in the main body of the race ran, so AE Looks Purrfect (Kitten's Joy - On Broadway by Rubiano) was left on the sidelines for the Dixiana Breeders' Futurity (gr. I). Maiden Make Music for Me (Bernstein - Miss Cheers by Carson City) received plenty of attention from the bettors, but Backtalk (Smarty Jones - Apasionata Sonata by Affirmed) went off as the slight favorite. Stately Victor (Ghostzapper - Collect the Cash by Dynaformer) was a respectable 5-1. Soundman (Songandaprayer - Class Choice by Peaks and Valleys) took the early lead. Noble's Promise (Cuvee - The Devil's Trick by Clever Trick) made an early move, getting to the front after 6 furlongs. He cleared the field, and then had enough left late to hold off a closing Aikenite (Yes It's True - Silverlado by Saint Ballado). Stately Victor made a move on the outside, but was stalled at 6th. Stately Victor didn't run a bad race. He was compromised a great deal by his post, always wide. Watch the Replay. Read more about the Breeders' Futurity here.

Dover Stakes

El Rocco (Vicar - Ultimate Strike by Crafty Prospector) was favored, with Quick Ride (Afleet Alex - Baby Lets Cruise by Tale of the Cat) at 5-1 and Kratisto (Afleet Alex - Torch by Risen Star) at 12-1. Quick Ride seemed to get off a little awkwardly, and he and Kratisto were at the back early. Up front, My Charming Clyde (Proud Accolade - Kiss the Wind by Smile) and El Rocco were battling. They were stalked by Ennis (Medallist - Arroyo Cottage by Dynaformer). Citrus Kid (Lemon Drop Kid - Orange Ice by Ginistrelli) came between horses in the stretch, and pulled away to win by 5. Both Kratisto and Quick Ride put in bids. Kratisto flattened out and finished 6th, but Quick Ride kept coming, finishing 3rd. Watch the Replay.

Mint Chip Bests the Actor and the King

Crystal Moment (Distorted Humor - Crystal Music by Nureyev) took the early money, but Best Actor (Rock Hard Ten - Dance for Dixie by Unaccounted For) was favored at post time. King Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Santo Mio by Southern Halo) was 5-1. Everyone was feeling pretty chipper with the cool weather. Ready for Change (A. P. Indy - Ajina by Strawberry Road (AUS)) is one for fans of chrome, a big white blaze and four knee socks. Best Actor was looking good, as was the favorite. It was a good start for most. King Kitten went after the early lead, while Best Actor was at the back. King Kitten maintained his lead for 6 furlongs, but then the pack began to catch him. Crystal Moment, who was never far off the pace, took over first, but he couldn't hold off the closers. Included in that group was Best Actor, who was motoring 6-wide. But, Mint Chip (Johar - Leaning Tower by Theatrical (IRE)) and Captain Stone (Sky Mesa - Thunder Warmth by Thunder Gulch) had the jump on him, and Best Actor had to settle for third. King Kitten ended up 7th. Watch the Replay.

Andina Takes Harissa

The only scratch was AE Victoria's Thyme (Stephen Got Even - Victoria Ridge by Vice Regent). Favoritism volleyed between Dixie's Sandals (Dixieland Band - Pink Sandals by Arch) and Warren's Jitterbug (Affirmative - Jitterbug Jan by Peaks and Valleys). Harissa (Afleet Alex - Dynasty by Time for a Change) was 12-1. They all broke in a line. Imperatriz (Chapel Royal - Devils River by Devil His Due) went for the lead, and was soon lengths clear of the field. Her closest pursuers were Glory Pride (Candy Ride (ARG) - Pride N Glory by Danzig) and Star of Sapphire (Tapit - Rhumb Line by Mr. Greeley). Harissa was near the back and rank. The pack began to catch up to Imperatriz, who lost all chance when she ducked in, causing her rider to lose his irons. Hitting the front was Andina (Singspiel (IRE) - Fragrant Oasis by Rahy), who had enough late to hold off Warren's Jitterbug. Harissa never did really settle, finishing 9th. Watch the Replay.

Good Prospects for Jim

Corbeau (Dance With Ravens - Parlez by French Deputy) was a scratch. Jim's Prospect (St. Averil - Pam'ssummerwind by Rodeo), who was last seen finishing 3rd in the Maryland Millions Lassie, was the big favorite. Recession Proof (Afleet Alex - Pert Lady by Cox's Ridge) was 31-1. Bernadette's Song (Strong Hope - Aesthete by Nijinsky II) sprinted to a clear lead early. Recession Proof stumbled badly at the break. In the stretch, Jim's Prospect took over, pulling away to win by better than 2. Dixieland Melody (Broken Vow - Uncommon Queen by Seattle Slew) made up some ground late to take second. Recession Proof never really recovered from her stumble, finishing last. Watch the Replay.
