News and Notes

Lisa's Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Chianti Red by Woodman) was scratched from the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes, as it was taken off of the turf. The winner was the Limehouse filly House of Grace (Limehouse - Gracility by Known Fact). Watch the Replay. Read more about the Jessamine here.

The 3-year old Smarty Jones colt Keefer (Smarty Jones - Shootforthestars by Seattle Slew) makes his long-awaited second start in the 8th at Keeneland, a 6 furlong Allowance race. Post time is 4:35 PM ET. Keefer won his only at 2, a 5 furlong Maiden Special Weight at Monmouth on July 20, 2008. Also in the race is Dr. Smarty Jack (colt; Smarty Jones - Hoh Buzzard (IRE)), who has compiled a record of one win, 2 seconds, and 1 third in 7 starts, while racing exclusively on the turf.

Roman Chestnut Outpaces Ciminella

It was raining pretty hard at Belmont, but the track was still fast when this one was run. Limeheart (Limehouse - Misty Gallop by Victory Gallop) was favored at post time. Ciminella (Afleet Alex - Bruanna by Housebuster) was 7-2. There wasn't much of a warm-up, as they went almost directly to the gate from the paddock. Haberdasher (Touch Gold - Zarzuela by Seattle Slew) went for the lead, Glass Path (El Corredor - Afternoon Krystal by Afternoon Deelites) checked at the start, and was at the back. Ciminella had a couple beat. Roman Chestnut (Roman Ruler - Silverdew by Silver Deputy) came on the outside to pressure Haberdasher, and in the stretch she went on by. She drew off to win by 3, becoming the 19th winner for Roman Ruler. Ciminella didn't have much impact, finishing 6th. Watch the Replay.

A Rapid Victory

Connie and Michael (Roman Ruler - Detect by Devil's Bag) was a scratch, Rapid Racer (Forest Wildcat - Meadow Miss by Meadowlake) was favored. Klea (Afleet Alex - Del Rae by Formal Gold) was 22-1, but she is a pretty thing and looked good in the paddock. November (A. P. Indy - Zigember by Danzig) seemed unhappy. A number of the fillies were feeling good in the warm-up, probably because of the cool weather. Rapid Racer outbroke everyone, but she had company in the form of Sylvan Saint (Forest Camp) and Hunt for Candie (Northern Afleet). Klea broke slowly, and was at the back. Rapid Racer shook free from the competition in the stretch and drew off to an easy win. Bonita Donita (Fusaichi Pegasus - Flashy Four by Storm Cat) and Hunt for Candie fought it out for second. Klea made up a bunch of places, ending up 6th. She also gained some valuable experience, as Calvin took her to the rail. Hopefully, a better start next time out will change the results. Watch the Replay.

Allowance Entry

Looks Purrfect (Kitten's Joy - On Broadway by Rubiano) faces 7 in a 1 1/16 mile Allowance race on the Polytrack at Keeneland, race 3. Post time is 2:05 PM ET. Looks Purrrfect was entered in the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland last Saturday, but didn't draw into the race off of the AE list. He has run three times. He finished 6th in his debut on the Arlington Park Polytrack on July 19, and then finished 5th at a mile on the yielding turf course at Arlington on August 23. In his most recent start, he won a mile race on the Arlington Park Polytrack on September 6. Interestingly, there are two fillies in this one, Vivid Colors (Roman Ruler - Scene Maker by Unbridled's Song), who was last seen finishing 3rd in a 6 furlong Allowance/Optional Claiming race at Saratoga on August 19, and Upperline (Maria's Mon - Snowflake (IRE) by Caerleon), who last time out was 2nd in the Top Flight Stakes at Arlington Park on August 8.

Lady Apple (Saint Liam - Shot Gun Favorite by Eltish) makes her second start in this contest scheduled for 6 furlongs on the inner turf at Belmont. I am skeptical about the turf part of the equation, with the way the weather was today in New York. Lady Apple was 5th in her debut, a 5.5 furlong dirt race for New York-breds at Belmont on October 1. Since her debut, she has worked 4 furlongs in :51.08 on the training track at Belmont on October 12. She sold for $20,000 as a 2-year old, and is out of stakes winner Shot Gun Favorite. Shot Gun Favorite was placed in 2 starts at 2, and earned $202,126 in her career. She has produced the winner Shot Gun Gal. Shot Gun Favorite is also a half- or full-sister to 8 winners, including grade III stakes-placed Shotgun Fire. Saint Liam's 37 runners have made 79 total starts, recording 11 wins, 6 seconds, 11 thirds, and $423,587.

Precious Penny (Harlan's Holiday - Wishing Willow by Seattle Song), Poppy Day (Saarland - Ms Jaguar Type by Gilded Time), Jazz Performer (Performing Magic - Jazzy Discovery by Regal Discovery), Invasive (Good and Tough - Jovial Charade by Jovial Turn), and AE entrant Boatman's Dream (Freud - Boatman Road by Lord At War (ARG)) met in a 7 furlong dirt race at Belmont Park on October 2, originally scheduled for the turf. Precious Penny was 6th, Poppy Day finished 7th, Jazz Performer was 8th, Invasive was 10th, and Boatman's Dream finished 11th. Precious Penny did her previous running at Saratoga, finishing 6th both on August 12 and September 4. Both were 5.5 furlong races on the dirt. Precious Penny sold for $60,000 as a yearling, and $105,000 at 2. She is out of the turf winning mare Wishing Willow, who was stakes-placed on the turf. Wishing Willow has produced 3 winners, 2 of which won on the turf. Poppy Day also previously ran at Saratoga, finishing 9th in a dirt race on August 6, and 7th in a turf race on September 4. She sold for $30,000 as a yearling, and is out of the winning mare Ms Jaguar Type. Ms Jaguar Type has produced 2 winners, one of which won at 2. Ms Jaguar Type is a half-sister to turf stakes winner Cameo Type. Jazz Performer's only other start was on September 11 on Belmont, where she was 6th. She is out of the unplaced mare Jazzy Discovery, who is a half-sister to 11 winners, including turf stakes winner Ma Femme. Invasive was 4th in her debut at Finger Lakes on July 21, and 5th at Saratoga on August 6. She is out of the winning mare Jovial Charade, who was a winner at 2. Jovial Charade is a full-sister to one winner, and a half-sister to 2 winners, including stakes winner Dr J. Boatman's Dream made her only other start at Presque Isle Downs on September 17, where she finished 2nd. She is out of the mare Boatman Road, who was placed on the turf. Boatman Road has produced Segal, who was a winner and grade III stakes-placed at 2.

Five Star Maria (Five Star Day - Mariakel by Lit de Justice), Nice and Naughty (Songandaprayer - Naughty Natisha by Known Fact), AE entrant Eager Leader (More Than Ready - Off Guard by Red Ransom), and MTO entrant Landlash (Catienus - Show the Mark by Miner's Mark) met at 6 furlongs on the Belmont turf on September 16, with Five Star Maria taking 2nd, Nice and Naughty 4th, Eager Leader 6th, and Landlash 9th. Five Star Maria made her only other start at Saratoga on August 30, where she was 5th on a good dirt track. Interestingly, the 2nd-place finisher in that race, Stellaluce, was the winner of Lady Apple's October 1 race. Five Star Maria is the first foal out of stakes-placed Mariakel, who was a winner on the turf. Mariakel is a full-sister to one winner, and a half-sister to 2 winners. Nice and Naughty finished 6th at Saratoga on August 30, behind Five Star Maria. She also ran at Belmont on July 8, finishing 6th. A $200,000 yearling, Nice and Naughty is a half-sister to 5 winners, including stakes winner Pupil and grade III winner Naughty New Yorker. Naughty New Yorker, who has earned $1,003,209 in his career, won 2 races at 2, including the Damon Runyon Stakes. Eager Leader previously finished 4th in a turf race at Saratoga on September 3. She is out of the turf winning mare Off Guard. Off Guard has produced 2 winners from 3 to run, one of which won on the turf. Off Guard is a half-sister to grade III winner Second of June, and 10 other winners. Landlash (Catienus - Show the Mark by Miner's Mark), who sold for $10,000 as a weanling, is out of the winning mare Show the Mark. Show the Mark has produced the winner Firsttodance. Show the Mark is a half-sister to 7 winners, including stakes winner Seattle Wave.

The other MTO entrant is Our Lady Liberty (Saarland - Lingquoit by Waquoit), who was 6th at Saratoga on August 6 and 7th at Belmont on September 13. Since she is out of a Waquoit mare, she should love it if the track is less than fast. She brought $15,000 as a yearling, and is out of the winning mare Lingquoit, who won 2 races at 2. Lingquoit has produced 4 winners, including stakes winner Bellamente.

Loyal Shadow (Wheelaway - U R Theweakestlink by Mountain Cat) is the most experienced entrant, having made 5 starts. Her best finish was 3rd in a 5.5 furlong race at Calder on July 10. Most recently, she finished 10th in a 1 1/16 mile turf race at Saratoga on September 4. She is a half-sister to 2 winners. Her dam, U R Theweakestlink, is a half-sister to 4 winners, including stakes winner Mellow Roll.

Lights Out Lisa (Menifee - Another Rage by Farma Way) was 3rd in her only start, a 6 furlong turf race at Belmont on October 7. She is a full-sister to 4 winners, and a half-sister to 1 winner. One full-sibling won at 2 and one won on the turf. Lights Out Lisa's dam, Another Rage, is a half-sister to 7 winners, including champion Artax.

Completing the main body of the race are unraced entrants Dreamnote (Freud - Totebook by Notebook), Centrina (Wheelaway - Forty Nine Scents by Tactical Advantage) and Foofs Melody (Freud - Crafty Melody by Crafty Prospector). Dreamnote is a half-sister to grade I stakes-placed Cribnote. Cribnote was a winner at 2, and finished 2nd in the Hopeful (gr. I) and 3rd in the Champagne (gr. I) at 2. Cribnote was also much the rage of many readers of this blog last year. Totebook, dam of Dreamnote, is a half-sister to 12 winners, including stakes winner Diane's Birthday and grade III winner D'Or Ruckus. Centrina is out of the winning mare Forty Nine Scents, who was a winner on the turf. Forty Nine Scents has produced 2 winners, one of which won at 2. Foofs Melody is a half-sister to 4 winners. Her dam, Crafty Melody, is a half-sister to 5 winners, including stakes-placed Gold N Her.
